    Matt, what're your thoughts on playing for a USL team that is affiliated with an MLS team? I could see the value in potentially being pulled up to the MLS squad, training with the MLS squad, and just having MLS eyes on you more often. On the other hand, it seems like those USL affiliated teams end up being used primarily as a development club for the MLS team and they emphasize bringing their academy players and young pros in for development, at times at the detriment of the end result for the USL club. Do you think it is a valid concern for YOU to worry about the club prioritizing development of young players instead of winning with a more seasoned pro like you?

    • @CalvinFox31
      @CalvinFox31 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a great question, I would love to hear his thoughts on this. I think now even so in the modern game and with the MLS trying to compete with the rest of the world I see the USL clubs that are affiliated with MLS teams being used for development purposes. With that being said it will be interesting to see how the USL grows because then lys the question you asked? Where do the more seasoned pros go? I think players like Matt would be a great example for academy players coming up but I don't know if club investors see that same thing. If you have time would love to hear what you think about my channel just started and would love any support if you like it!

    • @stephentackett4064
      @stephentackett4064 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the USL is getting rid of the affiliate teams for the very reasons you mentioned. USL wants a competitive league that pays players top salaries and brings in crowds. It is a super young league that will only grow, become more competitive and serve the mid size city markets. MLS will not set up in a market under 2 million or about. So, USL is taking that market over.

  • @dansugardude2655

    Q/A: What do you say to or about players who actually are somehow happy with just being in the USL? How happy will you be with your career if the USL ends up being the highest level you ever play at, despite all your efforts to push up?

    Continuous QnA :
    Hey Matt, my question is about balancing training and recovery; in your opinion, is it worth getting up early to fit an extra session in before school for example? I used to get up at 6am and do an extra ball session as well as another training session later in the day, however sometimes it’s hard to know if this is the right thing to do for my body, is it more beneficial to get an extra hour of sleep or get extra touches on the ball?

      Broooo what a good question, I have gone through that same thing! I have sacrificed so much for football and that includes my relationship. I think its important to understand this, sometimes we cant always have fun when we are trying to accomplish our goals its just how it is, but if football is important to you you have one life and out of respect for yourself you should give it 200% effort because its not about the contract it about the journey. The good, bad and ugly is apart that makes dreams so beautiful. If you have time would love to hear what you think about my channel there's a video on there that might help you!

    Q&A: Would you devote 100% of your time to football if you signed an MLS contract or would you still balance between YT/BecomeElite and your professional career in the MLS. I remember you saying that if a team were to prevent you from doing TH-cam in order to play you would do it. However, I don’t think that should be an issue now since we see premier league players vlogging (eg: Ben Foster) on game days and not getting restrictions from their clubs.

    My question for the Q/A: This past season I played for a USL 2 team and we won our division title, was ranked in the top 5 of the nation, and had a good run in playoffs but I didn't play much. Would it be better to stay with the same team and work extra hard to try and get more minutes or would it better to go to a different team where I can play more and get more experience so I can try to push to the USL 1 or NISA?

I'm 18 and I have just moved to Spain to go to university and play with a club called Rupe Sahagun. Luckily I mostly speak Spanish and I've made some friends here, but it can still be really tough being on almost entirely on my own for the first time in my life.

    Q/A: Hey Matt, I am interested to hear your perspective on early specialisation in sport?
    From one perspective it could be argued if individuals are aspiring to become pro footballers they need intense training in that specific sport to the develop the required skills. However playing other sports at a young age could lead to transferable skills beneficial for footballers? Also the consequences early specialisation could cause such as overuse injuries etc. Really interested to hear your opinion

    Hey Matt. When u mentioned ure a late bloomer. I felt like im even a "later-bloomer". Started playing for varsity football team only in 2019 at the age of 31.
    Im kinda schooling parttime while being a full time associate engineer. But covid kinda happened. So football kinda seized.
    I did try to keep myself fit during this time by going to gym and do some ball mastery on my own. But recently, my football training in my sch resumed. My match fitness was gone.
    I always wanted to be a pro footballer but i feel sometimes my age restricts me. More so as i dont have the "academy" experience when i was younger.
    Trainings had always been challenging for me. Most of the players would have alr done the drills before but i always tend to struggle in the beginning.
    I do my individual trainings on my own. But I will still struggle when it comes to group training as im not used to the combination of movements.
    Hope you can give some advice. And yea... playing the same position as u as a right back.
    Stay safe and peace!
    L

    19:51 The edge you have over the 19 year old USL athlete is star power. Any MLS team that brings you in would be brining in a great story of your journey and youtube series. That I think is what MLS teams look for more than anything else these days. Sell the story. Sell the journey. And in any case, if you play into your late 30's or even early 40's that is a 10 - 15 investment payoff for an MLS team. Especially, if you continue to steadily improve as opposed to most players who are already on the downslope at 29. It is an interesting story and one of the reasons so many follow your channel. I would suggest a book called The Inner Game of Tennis and Relentless by Tim Grover. There is a level beyond hard work and talent that the top 1% seem to share and these help explain that.

    He Matt I just wanted to recommend an idea for a two minute Tuesday. How to deal with losing and the lows of your career. This idea just came to me because yesterday my high school soccer team just lost the state championship final. So I was just wondering if you had any advice/tips to deal with this. Thanks
