It already started to show in how they approach their jobs. Jonathan has always had to fight and man up for his family's basic needs. Nancy will never understand that mindset and likes to push back in a way that only those with privilege can.

Everyone talks about "Steve's character development" but in every season he is adamant on getting a girlfriend. He needs to realize he does not need a girlfriend to be happy. Everyone who wants Steve to end up with Nancy only says that because they love Steve and want him to have a girlfriend but they never think about how Nancy would feel. Because of what happened with barb in season one, that's all Steve reminds her of. He made her think that he was cheating on her that she wasn’t enough. I personally can’t fathom going through that and having a relationship with someone.
