      Yeah not a good look.
      I find that this is a significantly worse version of the Battle Master at low levels, comes close to even with it at 7, and surpasses it by 15. That’s an awful long time for a subclass to come into its own, though.

      The Rune Knight got the same treatment, Giant's Might gave originally 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 damage EVERY attack that landed. Seemed bit to OP with a Fighter having Extra attack. Other means are possible to 'extended' use by getting more attacks.
      Hell If a 5th Level Fighter got this way and rolled nat 20 on both 😅 (1d8*2)*2 + 2d6 and possibly an bonus action if using Dual weapon wielder 1d6 extra 😮

    Protective field is quite versatile Since it’s trigger is a damage roll instead of a hit/attack, save, or check.
    Can be used to reduce damage from traps, spells, poisons, fall damage, etc...
    Pretty awesome.

    • @ZMSKfullpower
      @ZMSKfullpower 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, but reduction is so small that I don't really think it's matter. Unfortunetly the 2 main problems with this subclass is the fact that:
      1. This class do nothing actually "good" especially on higher levels.
      2. You need intelligence so for fighter, that's really suck. Thay should make this constitution or strength. Being force to focus on 3 skills is just unfair, hexblade warlock for example don't need to be strong, why ? Because he can use charisma in place of strength to make weapon attack. Here we should have similar choice.

    • @binolombardi
      @binolombardi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZMSKfullpower
      It’s actually probably better for a fighter to have multiple attribute dependency than it is for other classes, as they get more ASIs to boost their stats. Almost all classes get 5 ASI increases at levels 4,8,12,16, and 19. The rogue gets an extra one be at level 10 for a total of 6. The fighter gets two extra ASIs at levels 6 and 14.
      The damage reduction doesn’t scale up with spikes of effectiveness like other classes, but gradually. Sticking with the class will result in larger die, as well ability to take advantage of your ASIs to max out your intelligence to make your abilities more effective. You also get many more uses as your proficiency increases.
      There’s also the fact that since your Psi strike is limited to nice per your turn, you’re less likely to burn through the die as quickly and will have them available for these other uses.
      These features are impactful, and scale in a way to keep them relevant at all levels of play. There’s also the fact that the only “magical” feature of this class is the spell cast at high levels. The rest of these features cant be counterspelled, anti magic fielded, or dispelled. The saving throw to move creatures on hit also bypasses advantage by magic resistance that might apply to other saving throws.

  • @sacrificetosotec
    @sacrificetosotec 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think that people pay waaay too much attention to the combat potential of classes and not nearly enough to the RP potential. I've used the ability to move tiny objects around to distract, confuse, and frighten creatures a lot. It's worth taking the Telekinesis feat for this class too. Opens up a lot of shenanigans.

  • @Comicsluvr
    @Comicsluvr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Case in point: The description of Psionic Strike specifically says ONCE per turn. Still, a Fighter Nova will STILL be devastating, plus they can use a die defensively to make sure you GET TO the BBEG.

  • @HighmageDerin
    @HighmageDerin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Considering that every other class that has access to it get telekinesis at level 9 getting telekinesis at 18 is kind of a insult. I would have pushed that back to be their level 13 ability. Because then at least they would get the chance to play with it before the end of the game campaign.

    • @jkwynn87
      @jkwynn87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Telekinesis is a 5th level spell. Eldritch Knight only gets up to 4th level spells at 19th level. And it's casted without components, so it can't be counterspelled. And it can be casted more than once per day, provided you have the psionic die for every casting after the first.. Kind of par for course as far as subclass capstones are concerned for martial characters.

    • @HighmageDerin
      @HighmageDerin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jkwynn87 be that as it may, considering how early every other class has access to it. And considering that most games never get that high in levels, having it at 18 just seems sad. And honestly it's not all that powerful when you really think about it. For role play yeah It can be a pretty good. in combat however, using your action to move a heavy object and drop it on someone's head as opposed to using your action to make four or five attacks. Is just wasting your abilities! Because you still have to use your action in order to control the spell so it's either attack or control the spell not both. An argument can be said to use your action surge but then you're going to have to wait for that short rest anyways!
      That being said I never planned on taking my sigh night when I make one all the way to max level. I'm thinking about taking him up to level 6, just to get the second feet for the class and putting everything left into Warlock. Still haven't quite decided what subclass thinking old one would probably be the best fit for the Sigh Knight multi-class. This way I would get access to telekinesis anyways once the Warlock hit Level 9, and that would be at level 15 character level. Three levels earlier than just sticking with the warrior class. I lose out on some extra tax and the ability to reroll a saving throw once a short rest but I gain access to all the Warlock abilities up to that point more than making up for the loss of the other abilities. Still not sure if going to level 7 in a multi-class with syenite is worth it if I multiclassing Warlock. Especially if I choose pact of the blade cuz the invocations will do with the level seven abilities for the Psy night would do

    • @jkwynn87
      @jkwynn87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HighmageDerin Good luck with that. You're gonna run into some issues with MAD crossing Psi Warrior with Warlock. Unless you're rolling stats, you'll either be dumping charisma or intelligence.

    • @SeanBoyce-gp
      @SeanBoyce-gp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jkwynn87 A spell cast without components can still be counterspelled. The RAW requirement for counterspell is only that you are within range and you can see the creature doing the casting. It's still an action to cast the spell, so I'd see them closing their eyes or see the air wobble around their head or whatever.
      Abilities like this are for Villains, not players. So few players will ever encounter 18th level.

    • @jkwynn87
      @jkwynn87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeanBoyce-gp If there are no components, such as verbal, somatic, or material, the spell acts as subtle spell from the sorcerer's metamagic, which means no, you cannot counterspell because you'll never know it's being cast. You have to see the casting. If a sorcerer's casts with subtle spell for instance, he's not waving his arms around, not chanting magic words in a forgotten language, and if the spell requires no material components, not staring intently at a wand or random yard of string. Unless you cast detect magic while weird things are happening, you'll never know who the source is. And even if you do, by the time you realize that yes, Bob the sorcerer (or 18th level psi warrior) is using his mind to drop a 1000 pound Boulder on your healers head, it's too late to counterspell.
      Now I agree. This ability isn't stellar. I'll never say it's amazing because, well, it's not, especially at 18th level. But being that it is a 5th level spell and EKs only get to level 4 at 19th, like I said its about par for course in fighter subclass capstones.

    My opinion based on the actual psi warrior features as written.
    + You can’t ‘nova’ your psionic dice all in one turn because it’s limited to using that ability is limited to once per turn but this is good because it gives you more options for defensive play and manoeuvrability.
    + Due to the psionic dice being equal to double your proficiency, you actually have more dice at your disposal than battle master.
    + You get to use certain abilities once per day without expending a psionic dice.
    + The dice increase in potential to a maximum of a D12 allowing for significant battlefield effects.
    - You require a long rest to recover your psionic dice.
    - You don’t have as many options available to you as the battle master.
    - Much like Eldritch Knight, this class requires high intelligence modifiers making you Multiple Attribute Dependant.
    - Your last psi warrior feature is fairly underwhelming especially considering that fighter has access to more ASI/feat options than any other class and that in the same book that this subclass resides also has a feat that provides telekinesis without the need to be level 18.

    Magic is commonplace, usually...psionics are a somewhat lesser-known quantity.
    I actually could see myself using the "Athlete" background from the "Theros" book; and create a Fighter who maybe used their psionic talent to "cheat" their way to fame.
    Could work with the "Gladiator" background, too.

      And it didn't punish you for rolling poorly-- in fact, your Psi Die would increase in size for rolling a one on it. It would decrease in size if you rolled the highest number on the die. On average, you actually get more psychic power uses out of the Psi Die than you do with the pool system they moved to. At least at the start. I haven't looked at the math down the line.
      I'll also argue that even if it was more book-keepy, that would be okay. Some classes are more book-keepy than others. I'm far more likely to play a Warlock than a Wizard because of it. That doesn't mean Wizards shouldn't exist. Or that they should be dumbed down.
      I really want to know who gave the negative feedback. It seems insane. The decision to move from it is such a massive disappointment for me.

    I've never seen a subclass suggest you take the mobile feat.

  • @Adurnis
    @Adurnis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We must inevitably compare this subclass to the Battle Master, and in that respect, it does… POORLY at low levels, and eventually surpasses it at very high level. The dice size scales more slowly with the psi warrior, the total pool starts small, and the extra damage doesn’t come with bonus effects until level 7. By level 15, free half cover to allies and accumulated improvements to its other features lifts the Psi Knight over the battle master, but that’s an awful long time for a subclass to become relevant.
    The subclass’s MAD virtually requires an investment in INT as well. This isn’t as much of an issue for the ASI-loaded class-however, fighters are highly dependent on feats like sharpshooter and great weapon master to keep their damage relevant. Players will need to sacrifice these necessary improvements to make effective Psi knights. And of course, like all martial characters, this one will be dramatically overshadowed by full casters by the time it reaches the high levels where it comes into its own as a fighter. The flavor is fun, but it just doesn’t stand out as dramatically powerful, and I think the Battle Master’s power at low levels and greater flexibility will prove superior overall.

    Sadly this is yet more proof that nobody working at Wizards D&D have a single clue what psionics are in the game. Obviously none of them ever played D&D prior to 4th edition or never played psionics one it became something amazing. 3.0 and 3.5 had the best ideas. I won't let any of my players use the psionics in this book. It's just really bad. One could argue this isn't psionics but what non psionic types think psionics are. Magic used to very poorly mimic psionic ability. It's still a giant pile of bull malarkey. This is a fail Wizard. Just a big FAIL!!!
