Agreed. Such a deep and layered performance. Clancy Brown has had a fantastic career in film playing mostly brutes and bad guys but I think he did his finest work as Brother Justin. I wish more people knew about this show, it deserves to be on the level of Deadwood and The Sopranos and remembered just as fondly.
It is in my house. I have it on DVD. Watch it. Along with sopranos, boardwalk empire. NYPD blue. He was great in the green mile too, he really made people hate him. Did his job and did it well. @@silversnail1413
You can tell in the beginning he really did want to be a good person, but the death of the children is what broke him and sank him into the depths of his nature.
No he didn't! That was an outer shell around the blackness that was his true self. He was only outwardly good, and when it mattered he was pure evil. Even here, he's tormenting his sister, not expressing true caring. Which is why he's such a great character.
I have to concur with Mikey Moose. Brother Justin's very nature is darkness and it's only through his religious upbringing that he was provided the structure to not give in to it. But when the "miracles" start happening around him, he loses all humility and discipline and gives in to his base nature, sadistically punishing those he perceives as sinners in a twisted interpretation of his holy work. As the show progresses, his arrogance and depravity continue to emerge, and he shows no regrets.
This scene is so awesome. Carnivale was such an amazing and beautiful series. I truly believe Clancy Brown nailed all his parts in all his scenes. I still think his performance was the most profound and outstanding in the show. All though all the actors in this series had some top notch acting performances.
I love Clancy Brown. He’s my favorite actor of all time and my biggest celebrity crush. I could listen to him read a phonebook. But when he yells, all I hear is Mr. Krabs and my brain can’t handle it.
Here you can see how justin had his good side on him. I think the fire burning was just a catalyst for him to become antichrist superstar. And yeah Brown is an amazing actor. His performance as Justin is just class up the wazoo
I agree with you wholeheartedly. This has to rank as one of my favorite series. It's too bad so many people were to interested in watching other mindless entertainment at the time. Perhaps it might have provided them some insight as to what is going on around us to this day. I enjoyed so much - I purchased the DVD.
@WendyKroy77 As a hardcore atheist, I agree with everything you're saying, but what is the relevance exactly? This is an amazing portrayal of a deeply religious man (Who is also the villain in the series by the way, that's kind of the point.) delivering a powerful speech in a wonderfully written show. This isn't real life, this isn't a real preacher or his beliefs. It's just a performance.
@WendyKroy77 Even when the religious are portrayed as the villains? The world in the show is one where magic and religious history is "true" (Miracles and curses exist) but the religious figure are almost always villains. It really is a fantastic series...
Boy I really think you take this show way too seriously. It's a SHOW. Calm yourself. The creators of the show probably agree with you, they just wanted to make a SHOW
This show really demonstrated how great of an actor Clancy Brown is.

Before Daniel Knauf's CARNIVALE ,
there was Shaun Cassidy's AMERICAN GOTHIC.
The most underrated.
Everything he plays in demonstrates his great acting skills! From Bad Boys (1983) to Shawshank Redemption, to Spongebob, to Carnivale and beyond!

Well said, that's what makes him such a good villain. He starts out compassionate, but the dark avatar is the dark avatar.

We can blame SISTER IRIS for that.
Portrayed by the late great Amy Madigan,
she burned down their orphanage and
murdered those poor kids.
As much as Justin looks like a good guy here, what he did to Sophie's mother was way before this. So he was always a monster.

When he's calm, he's Lex Luthor and when he gets angry he sounds like Mr Krabs lol
Clancy Brown in top form, right here. One of the greatest. The best monologue in the series, with Samson's intro being a close second.
Here you can see how justin had his good side on him. I think the fire burning was just a catalyst for him to become antichrist superstar. And yeah Brown is an amazing actor. His performance as Justin is just class up the wazoo
Clancy's voice gets higher pitched once he gets angry.
Krabs
Insane range of clancy brown
Mr. Krabs angry.
2:05 He became Mr. Krabs!😂
Someone needs to mash this up with some SpongeBob clips showing SpongeBob slaving over the grill, Patrick being abused, and so on.
LMAO
It really takes an amazing actor to do this sort of dialogue.
- Should I watch this movie?
- Clancy Brown .
* ran to watch the movie*
4 years late but it's not a movie. It's an HBO show
h a n k
one of the greatest scenes in tv history. you can be angry or afraid depending on how you situate yourself in this world and its affairs...
this is and was such a wonderful show. it was so deep.
Man... Clancy Brown doesn't act, he IS brother Justin. Had he been my local preacher I'd follow him too.
Mr. Krabs makes an appearance at 2:05.
"NEVER, I'D RATHER HE COME IN HERE RIGHT NOW AND EAT YOU ALL ALIVE!" (foams at the mouth)
@DamionBaal13 Wow, I didn't even notice that it was getting darker as he got angrier - great observation!
Clancy Brown is a great actor!
WHOA! This guy is an ACTOR! Like one of the BEST actors! Clancy Brown is amazing!
Who else could pull off a scene like this?
Clancy Brown as Brother Justin Crowe in CARNIVALE should have garnered an EMMY nomination as Best Lead Actor In A Drama Series.
This (imo) was one of his best performances(I mean him in this show, not just this scene). No other role as been as memorable for me.
100% of comments: Talking about Mr Krabs' voice actor in the Series
My favorite thing is that Brother Justin Crowe and Mr. Krabs are played by the same guy.
By far my favorite character of all time
I love this show more than anything. notice how the more intense he gets, he sucks the light out of the room.
This scene has stuck with me.
I love this show more than anything. Notice that the more angered he gets, he sucks the light out of the room...Thee Usher. Damn HBO.
At the end he sound's like Mr. Krabs.
Bcuze he's the voice of Mr.krabs
@MrDeCorey Because he is the voice actor for mr. krabs! :3
@DamionBaal13
I notice how at then end it's kind of pitched like Mr. Krabs.
Clancy Brown is a world-class actor!
Wow. Powerful scene! This show was ART. Damn HBO.
GREAT WORK
Why did nobody upload a clip of Lucius Belyakov? I just randomly thought of the "there is no management" scene.
argh was getting into it so much and then it stopped
Clancy Brown is brilliant!
Art imitates life and anyone who says this is "just a show" is in some way deaf to living.
He is hot.
2:03 Krabs
This priest was my favorite character.
As a priest, he should be a personification
of good, but he was just the opposite.
An amazing character!
"SPONGEBOB!" You're *FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!"*
What an intimidating antagonist!
Clancy "I caught the brain bug" Brown

Clancy is brilliant.
Nuff said.

He's not a priest, he's a reverend....
Why is he wearing a watch? Time existed back in 1934?
Damn that music build up!

@ProfessorCrow the relevance is that I cannot get into a show that is taking religion this far.
SpongeBob me Boy
Nah its just you who has a squared mind. Dont blame the show and the subjects they're dealin with :)
Boy I really think you take this show way too seriously. It's a SHOW. Calm yourself. The creators of the show probably agree with you, they just wanted to make a SHOW
