    This movie is in my opinion the best Ralph Bakshi movie.

      Up to the ranks of Fritz the Cat (1972), Heavy Traffic, Wizards (that is if it were made for a slightly older audience/rerated PG-13), American Pop and Fire and Ice.

    I honestly don't mind the backgrounds, gives it a punk fanzine look that works for a Bakshi film. Good review by the way.

      Plus from what I heard the biggest reason they went with it was due to the budget

    Also this movie had a strict budget, that's the only reason he needed live action bits

    If I was to look at this through modern production values, I'd say this was a film that started out with some location scouting and began primary production and then lost its funding - so they turned it into an animation instead. On its face, that is what it looks like. BUT, if they intended it to look like this from the beginning, then they created one of the most unique looking films I've ever seen. Truly, its stands apart from just about anything else I've seen. And I have to say, if that was their intention from the beginning, then its is a piece of art.

    Its hard to understand Satire and social commentary if you don't understand what's being satirerized and the social commentary being made. This movie goes over your head because you don't understand the time in which it was made and the symbolism being used. SHould have researched the motivations a little more

    Chances are, that because Bobsheaux doesn’t understand great movies like anime ones by Studio Ghibli like Howl’s Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Seceet World of Arrietty, Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky and even Princess Mononoke (and yet he understands spin-offs which just go to show the side character wasn’t strong enough to carry their own movies like Cars 2 and Minions), chances are that he would also misunderstand amazingly mature films like Ralph Bakshi films (re: Coonskin and the rest of the ones before the one of the 1990s that could have been so much better if it were for RB himself rather than Hollywood, no pun intended on the antagonist) as much as Media Hunter Reviews.

    If anyone is reading this, I have sensational news about this movie. I am Italian and apparently, an Italian youtuber who dubbed in it's entirety alongside some friends of his "The Thief and the Cobbler" in Italian for the very first time, managed to find the lost Coonskin Italian Dub. But this isn't just a lost dub... Ladies and gentlemens, the Italian dub isn't the 1975 Bryanstone censored version but the original, uncut, 1974 Paramount version! This... This is one and only Italian dub of Coonskin: The Director's Cut.

      +MidwesternHooligans I think he gets, I just think he was looking at it from a critical perspective rather then political. and honestly I agree with some of the critique. for example the cut a ways aren't integrated well. from a film narrative it makes the story weaker instead of stronger. I enjoy some of them especially the one with that woman and the rat story but couldn't been incorporated better?

    • @MidwesternHooligans
      @MidwesternHooligans 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I suppose, but how can you separate the political aspect of the film when it is created for political and social critique. I'm not against him but he did go and see that this was based loosely on uncle remus but didn't make the connection that maybe these cut a way stories are part of the Uncle Remus style motif set. In this Uncle Remus motif set are the stereotypes (like Uncle Remus himself) perverting the image, fighting the image created for them, and taking back their dignity. These cut away are part of the story. The characters Bear, Rabbit and Fox are in the same universe as all these cut away. Without the political thought in this movie the thing fall in the mind into something the liberal phraseology master feel is nothing more then confusing and just bad. Now I'm def not out to get him or anything you know. I am in no way against him even talking about the movie. I hope more people talk about this movie.

    • @Bismuth83X
      @Bismuth83X 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You act like a person of one ethnicity can't understand anything that another ethnicity goes through. True, they probably couldn't TOTALLY understand it, but at least they'd have a pretty good idea. For instance, I don't really know what being a physicist is like, but I think I have a good idea. Not trying to be racist or anything, I'm just saying that people of other races CAN understand that people are and have been treated horribly just because they're different. The point isn't to have minorities come out on top, it's to have minorities and majorities living to the same standards.

      *Coonskin - AniMat’s Classic Reviews predictions*
      Alternate title: When the Worst Turns Into the Best - Coonskin Review
      Release: Late 2030s (would have made the movie even older, and I mean way older, like, around five eighth-centuries aka about 62 years old)
      Description: Maybe next time Media Hunter reviews should review the movie more like me!
      Score: 9/10 (that would be completely close to a perfect
      Score except maybe an 8/10 for the animation because while it did the very best it could to be enjoyable)

    I think the scene with the god fathers wofe was meant to represent the plight of the mob wife. Eomen who marry mobsters have to live 1 of 2 ways. Complacent and willing to burn the bloody clothes, or try and protect themself from the evil by going to the cops or even killing the member themself to save who they love and themself. But it usually winds up woth them dying from either retaliation or failure of the plan

    this film always interested me, everything you said about its production is true. I wish it could of been fully animated I think it would of helped the film a lot more however they put them in front of stock footage to keep down the cost., I have done a college paper on this film and I still don't understand it completely I know what it is meant to be but it didn't present it clear enough. I don't want to say I love this film because it's not pretty enough to love and Im not saying take out the grit but the old effects is hard to look past. perhaps if it had a bigger budget? I wish someone would redo this today I think it would be very successful maybe Arron McGruder who created the boondocks. this film and this message has so much potential but as far as art is concerned it missed it's mark. thank you for the wonderful review.
