I remember in Jacksonville Florida when I was 12- 13 (1955-56), a radio station would have the battle between Elvis and Pat every Saturday, and I would call until I got through to vote for Elvis. Elvis won the most, but Pat did well.
It seems to be the common thought that Elvis just covered Blues or R&B songs to get his start. Just like Pat remembers he did a lot of Country songs as well from the beginning to the end. Also, gospel and any other song no matter the style that moved him. Maybe not all his movie soundtracks but there is a lot of great songs in those as well. I liked anything he sings. He took influences from everyone and everything to create is music.
Magna Cum Laude from Columbia. That's impressive. Most musicians are highly intelligent, but a lot of them choose music (for good reason) and never finish college. Good for Pat for finishing and finishing on top. Elvis always seemed like he was very intelligent, too. Seems I heard he loved to read, because he was a searcher, not the booksmart type.
Pat meant well. Elvis was so big, the stars of the day were awestruck by him. I was 12 when he passed, and there was never a news story like it. Elvis was supposed to live forever, not be mortal and die at 42. He blazed a lot of trails, opened so many doors. Unfortunately he showed the world how the world's biggest superstar, only behind Jesus, was human. Had faults, and what not to do when the fame is so great. No one will ever have his impact, charisma, looks, vocal ability and staying power. It will be 46 yrs next month, and no one has come close. I wish the so called tribute artists would just stop, they're all horrible. We have enough recordings and video of the real thing, they are far from a tribute.
Pat Boone was a really nice actor as well as singer. He played a great part in Journey to the Centre of the Earth - 1959 with James Mason. He did toned down versions of R 'n' R to appeal to the adults who were against the new cult contributing to juvenile deliquency.
After all these years I have never seen a photo with Elvis & Pat, and also Elvis with Rick Nelson! I trust that someone out there could assist! Pat is such a great personality
On Sirius XM satellite radio, each weekend they replay an American Top 40 Casey Kasem broadcast from that same calendar week during a random year in the 1970s. I remember listening last year in September/October when they played the Top 40 from that week in 1972. Casey said that Ricky Nelson (Garden Party), Elvis Presley (Burning Love), and Chuck Berry (My Ding-A-Ling) were all in the Top 10 together for the first time since 1957.
I said the same thing.because people came to see a live show. Not falling asleep singing. This is the first time I've heard anyone ever say that I was lip sing and including Pat Boone and that's what they did back then. Only time they'll do a lip sync that I know, is when they're on a TV show or something and I have quick changes. Unless you're not that good life. I almost got better when you sing live he sounded great on stage. Alice would do that to his fans. Especially his first two songs. I think Pat Boone is full of s***

Yes, it turns out that Elvis was going the wrong way with the drugs situation. It's too bad, because a lot of his fans, myself included, feel he had a lot more to give to the world....Nobody knew at that time that TIME was running out for Elvis.
I've been an Elvis fan since '56. Later, I felt bad for him. No one should have the tremendous success Elvis had, so soon, no one could have handled it better than Elvis. When he lost his beloved mom, he was just 23, he lost his way.
I was around then, Pat was a decent singer and attractive, but never was in the league with Elvis. they both were from Tennessee and often were in the same shows. Elvis was always nice to Pat, and Pat was the "anti Elvis' to teachers, and preachers. He was always presented as the real Christian of the two. When in fact both were raised in the church of God. Elvis was a superstar, Pat was a singer and actor that had a era of success. Pat always sounds a little arrogant when he speaks of Elvis and claims that he was a star already when Elvis came along. He also acts holier than thou when he speaks about Elvis, when Elvis always acknowledged him as being a good singer. The men of that day were totally jealous of Elvis, I had two in my own family. But after Elvis did his time in the Army, to which he was drafted, more men respected him.
He said when he met him in Oct 1955 that elvis hadn't had a "hit record" yet, that's false, he had a hit with That's alright Mama-not a million seller hit song but it WAS a Hit song in 1954
His memory of the time frame may be off somewhat. I don’t Believe Elvis was going to Vegas just one month before he died. He was leaving very shortly for a tour the day he died and I’m pretty sure it had been more than a month since he’d last performed. Please correct me if I have that wrong.
Right. Elvis ended his previous tour in late June. He was resting from end of June to August 17th where he was scheduled to play Portland Maine. And also right Red West certainly not with him a year before he died much less a month.
Pat clearly doesn't remember this. First, if this was July of '77, Red & Sonny would not have been there as you pointed out. It was July of '76 when Red, & Sonny were fired. Second, where's this photo taken at the airport. I don't think there is one. But Pat seems 100% sure the one month after meeting him at the airport, that he died. Oh and finally, Elvis wasn't playing Vegas at all in '77. So, this must have happened in '76 but I have my doubts. Surely, this "photo" would clear things up for sure.
Pat Boone seems a smart fellow and was a world-class crooner in his prime but his personality is antithetical to the spirit of Rock 'n Roll as his rendition of "Tutti Frutti" clearly demonstrated.
The frienhip is ironic. Pat Boone was the adult population’s sanitized substitute for the “rebellious” “unacceptable” Elvis. Boone even did some of Elvis’s hits as an alternative to his in an attempt to appease all of the mom’s and particularly the dad’s out there. Frankly speaking Boone was a traitor to the teenage population and they never responded anywhere near the way they did toward Elvis. Boone was a very poor substitute.
