  • "Recognized" is a special series from Brave Little State about Abenaki peoples and the ongoing dispute about who belongs to their communities.
Chapter One: Two Abenaki First Nations, headquartered in Quebec, contest the legitimacy of the groups that the state of Vermont recognizes as Abenaki tribes - a conflict that has its roots in disputed historical narratives.

The reason Wiseman (31:08 of the audio) felt unwelcome (after Sept. 2003) at Odanak was because Gilles Obomsawin (Chief of Odanak at the time) would NOT make Wiseman "an Abenaki" without first verifying that Wiseman's narrative...that his paternal grandmother was indeed an Abenaki. [Btw, she was 100% French-Canadian (no Indigenous ancestry whatsoever], and this upset Wiseman greatly because Gilles would not "legitimize" Wiseman. And that right there, Wiseman asking Gilles to approve Wiseman as being an Abenaki, alerted Gilles to the BS in Vermont and rescinded Odanak's previous 1976 & 1977 Resolutions by Odanak Chief Walter Watso. Since then, Wiseman began a campaign of denigrating and mocking Odanak by calling them "ex-patriots" and lying about the Wabanacus RPPC Postcard of Odanak Chief Nicolas Panadis, implying that Panadis was identified as a Chief of Missisquoi (the contemporary post-1975 group that Wiseman became a member of in 1987 or so led by the late Homer St. Francis Sr.). Like John Moody, Wiseman manipulated data and findings to suit the group's political agenda and propped up as "evidence" that was never really vetted/evaluated as to it's actual merit or truthfulness. For example, the 4 Alburg Indians. Some of Charles H. Partlow's descendants include Carollee Reynolds, Brent Reader, Patsy (Partlow) St. Francis (Homer's wife) and Melody Walker Mackin. Looking at the original record of the Alburgh Town Records, one can readily understand that the 4 named men, were not the 4 unnamed Indians. Who were the Indians that were unnamed. Akwesasne Mohawks who had joined the Vermont Sharpshooters unit in the Civil War. But in their application for State recognition, these afore mentioned persons, implied and claimed along with Wiseman, that specifically, Allen Stratton's 1986 published book on Alburgh, Vermont Town, seemingly proved that Charles Henry Partlow was an Indian, thereby making the afore mentioned descendants in the Swanton group "Abenakis"... Understand that this is just one of MANY examples of the deceptions of the Pretendians in their lust for fraudulent Vermont State recognition over the years, of which Hinda Miller, Vincent Illuzzi and Diane Snelling propped up to the naive Vermont Legislature. As Sen. Vince Illuzzi stated, "We don't care if these people are not actually Abenakis, we are going make them Abenakis, officially, for the Quad 2009" ... There's always more to the dynamics of these "Abenaki" in Vermont (and New Hampshire) that even VPR and NHPR have not even begun to grasp or understand about the Pretendians of either state. But this is a very good beginning to Vermonters to study and begin to understand the realities and truths vs. the fallacies and agenda's going on.

Growing up here i always thought there was something wrong with it, my family is from Wendake 7a, and I was born in Eagle Butte, SD and am enrolled in both tribes. I think there might be some of these people who are actually Abanaki, but they need to have a concrete lineage requirement that is verified through Odanak.

Shameful chapter in Vermont history - I am in many ways ashamed of the 40 years I have spent supporting Vermont progressive identity politics, which always seems to privilege yet another group of bourgeois white men who invade spaces they have no right or claim. To refocus attention and resources upon themselves, whether as pretend women or pretend victims of native genocide. In either case, it seems to be increasingly common and acceptable for white men to coopt the lived experience of the very people they have oppressed, once again erasing their voices and visibility.
    Shame on Vermont.

While some may assume that such audio podcast is "blah blah blah" most actual Native Peoples and open minded people NEED to grasp the dangers and harms perpetuated by Pretendians on their very identities. This all that's happened in Vermont, is very much parallel to and has become a infestation, much like STOLEN VALOR. Dismissiveness is not an option.
