I don't usually comment, but I came here to say to please audition for the musical theatre course! I think the regret of not trying will be far greater than the pain of not getting in. Here's what you can do: find an accountability buddy, take small steps and let them help you with them (like hitting the apply button together). I'm in my mid-twenties and planning to audition for a 4-year music degree, so you're not alone in the whole creative career shenanigans. And you're never too old to chase a dream. Good luck!!

I watch another British TH-camr who refers to his girlfriend as "the missus". Daniel could try that if he likes it. Here in the US, it's common for guys to refer to their girlfriends as "my better half" to be sweet, or "my other half" when they're not feeling it. Lol

I've realised I'm often a 'lurker' with channels i love- liking videos and feeling feelings but never leaving comments - so the parasocial relationship is wholly one-sided. this + a lot of creators I love saying similar things- there isn't anyone listening, the hate is terrible, they're burnt out, etc, has made me think maybe the kind people all need to speak up a bit!
I've always felt your content was so comforting, like having a cuppa with an understanding friend. While I also loved the 2017-18 era of the flat musical chairs and chaotic collabs, it was because I so wanted a friendship group like that, to be your age and have your jobs and make things with my friends. and now i am! it's great, but also exhausting, and impermanent. and I find myself wishing to be older and more stable because my 20's are scary! oh the irony. we always want what we can't have.
Dan, your videos are just my favourite. Everyone else in these comments uses the same comfort-watch-warm-and-snuggly metaphors because they're true. Your content is totally un-judgmental and very human, in the best way. the kind people will stick around through whatever evolutions there are.
Congrats on Her Indoors (love that, might I suggest a term from my Aussie boyfriend: The Missus), and please go for the masters. I said it to my boyfriend yesterday and I'm saying it here too: the time will pass anyway! I'm applying for postgrad for the same reason!
Happy Holidays, it's always good to see you xx

I seldomly leave comments, but I want you to know that you're the only creator from your old group who I'm still subscribed to AND have notifications on for. This is not a diss to the others, I just don't feel connected to their content anymore. Watching your videos is exactly like what you said. It feels like sitting down in a cosy corner with a coffee and catching up with an old friend. I'm 30 now and watching your videos is still a comfort for me.

I'm not usually a comment guy but if it helps at all, the vibes definitely feel like catching up with an old friend. You said it yourself - everyone still here is here for you - in whatever form that takes.
    Best of luck, Dan.

there are lots of actors who's careers didn't start, or take off, until they were older, and its so easy to feel like it's too late when we're brought up idealising the child prodigy. sometimes we need time to become the person who can take on the stories we need to tell, and it might seem wishy-washy to say it, but if your passion is guiding you then there is more to that story... our dreams can change too... holding ourselves up to expectations of our younger selves can hold us back from seeing the potential right in front of us. the only way we can fail is by never trying :)

I think it’s lovely how your content has changed and matured. I was 15 in 2015 and you mentioned about the chaos of Baking with Layton and that was absolutely the content I was looking for as a teenager. But I’m 23 now and also going through the stresses of work and life and now living by myself and videos like this are so much more comforting and relatable than the videos I was watching 8/9 years ago. I think your audience has matured with you and anyone who doesn’t like this content probably isn’t your audience. But I know that I am absolutely here for videos like this☺️

The constant feeling you could loose everything tomorrow and the subsequent worry is too relatable for me. That's been me for too long now. The last 8 years basicall? Ever since an unexpected vet bill took out what little savings I had and put me in debt while knowing not doing it would mean my cat would with 100% certainty die and we could be right back at that vet at anytime even with the meds I would be paying for the rest of his life. Before that, the worry was there but not constant. After that, things iust worked out for it to be something I feel and deal with every freakin day. I think its so ingrained at this point that even if my situation completely changed and universal income became a thing to have as a safetynet, I'd still worry all the time for the rest of my life unless I got years of therapy to work on it. The last couple days have been particularly bad. Having the fact that one improperly filed bit of paper could ruin your life hanging over head, and not hearing back from the bureaucratic that called to yell at you for something that is at least half their fault and is now the one to decide your fate is no fun. None. Sadly even Dan's lovely video style and humor could help distract me once these feeling were kicked up. I think Im gonna have to come back and rewatch another day so I can properly appreciate it.

Whether it'll mean anything coming from a complete stranger, you really do feel like an old friend. I honestly rarely watch videos on TH-cam anymore, but I always get a lil smile on my face when I see you've uploaded and I make my way over to watch. You have such grace with your words, you're talented, entertaining, and mate, you're funny as fuck!! I started watching you when I was doing my GCSEs and I'm 24 now- you've been there through a lot, and I really really can't thank you enough for just doing what you do. I really hope you go for that course, because I'm desperate to see you on stage- we all believe you can do it, and I know you know you can too 💜

As someone who’s gone through drama school, it’s absolutely possible to have a part time job at the same time as training, lots of people do it. It is a lot, weekend work is really the main vibe but it’s entirely possible, especially if you do a job like teaching at stagecoach or something similar that pays better than something like a hospitality job. It can be tough but it’s 100% possible.
As for the anxiety of auditioning, auditioning for drama school is one of the hardest forms of auditioning you ever do in the industry, I did it for three years before I got into my BA course. You just have to have confidence that you are good enough, most of the time if you don’t get through/ get in it’s nothing to do with your talent at all, it’s more to do with whether you’re a good fit for the people they’ve already got, whether they think you’re ready etc etc. It’s basically all down to things you can’t control, same as auditions in the industry. We get taught to not think about whether we’re ‘good enough’ and more whether you’re ‘right enough’ which has nothing to do with talent and is all to do with what they’re looking for. If you know you’re good enough, you absolutely will be, you just have to go in with material you feel confident with, knowing you’re good enough to be there, and if it’s the right place and the right time it’ll work out.
I’m thinking about starting up some kind of coaching for drama school auditionees so would be happy to offer any advice or point you in the direction of others who can assist if you feel like you need some guidance. Best of luck with it all, never give up on your dreams!!

After hearing some of your honesty in this, I must say, of all of that original group that I was first introduced to when you all made videos together, you are the only one I still follow and watch, as times changed I just found less connection to most, but this channel was always a nice comfort, and I've always appreciated your perspective and enthusiasm for your passions.
Seeing part of your journey, certainly helped me find some of my own path. A few years ago I refreshed my look, and it was all born from a few of your videos, inspiring me to paint my nails and finally start dressing for myself.
I do hope whatever the future brings, you find the path that works for you

Your content, especially Baking with Layton, is brilliant because of the way you play off the guests you have baking with you. When you cooked by yourself, it was lacking. Not because you aren't good, but because nearly every comedy act is a duo ..... You and the chosen side-kick. Thats just the make up of it, just like your personal vlogs and monologues are great too, because the expectations of the style are completely different.

And power to them, honestly but I prefer this kind of sincerity. I’m a few years younger than you and I feel the tension of life intensely these days. Living is a messy, often difficult and painful ordeal, but it is equally beautiful. I’ve been watching you many years and every time I see you I wish you well. I have to say I relate a lot with what you said about "I don't want feel this way this time next year". That is so on the target. That's pretty much how I feel about ends of years in the last 2 years. It's been a weird ride where I see myself not being able to find a place to feel good. In work mainly, because I know everything else will eventually happen (relationships and all of that). But the work part... It's been rough. And unfortunately without money we can't do much nowadays, which sucks.
Which leads to the next point you said on the career part that you are thinking about the Masters degree but end up postponing it because of the "what will I do if I'm rejected". All I can say is don't think about it. Just do it (easy to say right?). Again by experience, I've already lost tons of time thinking about that. Sometimes I have that big drive to sort my life and plan everything, then comes those thoughts creeping in... "What if I apply and I'm rejected?", "What if I'm not good enough?". That fear of the unknown and the safety of that one thing you dream about that "it's always there" because you don't go for it and so it's a door that you don't either open or close is the worse we can to ourselves. And I'm 42. Time has gone even more on my end (which is the thing that scares me the most considering the situation I'm in and how unmotivated I've been feeling).
So... Do it Dan. If you feel you want it, then go for it. Don't wait. Don't think. And also, the sooner you see what's behind that door the better. Because if it happens, awesome. If it doesn't happen, you will start looking elsewhere and better sooner than later. I took ages to understand that and now I'm living the consequences. Go for it.

Absolutely love this little insight in your life. I feel that we, as viewers, are doing life as well, and we don’t want to know all details (must say I did a little happy clap when you told us your girlfriend moved in). We’re all busy and stressed and anxious as well, i bet a lot of us ‘adults’ still need and want a ‘real’ adult bc we don’t know how to adult. I do feel a lot with the comment about catching up with an old friend, watching your vids makes me want to have a nice long chat. It brings me comfort to watch and hear you speak about everyday things. Proud of you Dan, and truly hope you get your ass to do the auditions. Don’t have a ‘what if’.

really like that reflection at the end, realising how your content has and will evolve with who you are. a very admirable trait to be able to look back and realise how you’ve changed is for good and see it in a positive light. big love for you

I’ll be honest and say that I have watched your videos less since around the 2019 mark, partially from the reasons you stated involving your friendship group and me being so comforted by you all together, but also just in general watching less youtube. but having this video on in the background whilst doing my uni work has felt like a ‘check in’ with a friend that i needed, to talk about the normalities of life, whilst also being able to sit complete silence and do the work i need to do. this video has drawn me back in, and i’ll be taking the time to do this with your content more often. aka. potentially a channel binge whilst i work at my project deadline. i can't wait to watch you more again :)

Hi Dan, It was lovely to exchange a few words with you at MCM!
It's always lovely to see you pop up in my Subs! The openess and honesesty of this video is really refreshing and inspiring for someone who is trying to do the same for myself.
You said it perfectly. It feels like a catch-up with an old friend!

I started watching your channel through baking with Layton many years ago, and I just want to say that you were not merely a facilitator to watch other people. In fact, for me, those people were facilitators to watch you. That’s not to say that they aren’t all lovely, but you are also very lovely and endlessly entertaining, and I stuck around for you xx

this is such a raw and heartfelt video Dan, I really felt like I should comment here, if nothing else to say that in my opinion?
you would be the main attraction in my eyes, you have done so much for me by just existing; by being a role model without realising it.
it probably sounds silly, but I found you incredibly inspiring the first time I saw you because you always seemed to be so unapologetically yourself, and I think that that is incredibly comforting. it's like you were giving your audience (and by extension me) to do the same.
before TH-camrs like yourself, I had not really seen many good male role models that were not incredibly masculine and stuff, I was surrounded by it. and seeing people like you who are just happy doing whatever makes you happy really helped me to slowly evolve into the person I am today, to move forward in a direction that I wanted to move in, and to say bye to stereotypes.
So, it saddens me to hear you say that you're only as good as your friends. because, just by existing, you've changed a lot of lives, I can only speak for me, but I don't think I'd be nearly as confident without you!
    Thanks Dan

It feels exactly like a cosy catch up with an old friend (the type of friend where it doesn’t matter how long you go without seeing each other you just slip back into feeling natural). Always here for whatever you’re up to.

I agree with many of the comments, the Old Friend feeling is very real.
I'd also like to add that I hear all my inner thoughts when you talk about wanting to do theatre. There is nothing like it, I love acting, I know I'm a great singer and theatre is such a huge passion of mine. Yet, all my life I've been too scared to pursue it in actuality (despite my mum even having studied theatre! Which honestly made it harder for reasons). Hearing you talk with such confidence on trying to go for it for real this time gives me hope that one day I will fidn the courage as well to jump into the deep end.

How lovely it was to hear from you again - chiming in that this wholly feels like catching up with an old friend! Complete with the fact that it took me 10 days to get back to this...
Dan, your videos have always made me feel warm inside, and likewise caused the loudest of snorts of laughter. I feel this is because of your honesty and kindheartedness, and that is something rare in these times of short-attention-span-aggressive-content-making youtube, and heck, even in 2015 youtube! And as time goes by and we're finding and re-discovering our place in a confusing new life stage, it's comforting to hear that you, too, have changed, and yet you still have the qualities that made you stand out for us in the first place. So even if I make my way out of the depths of odd adulting and back to you way late, it's so great to know that you're there, in your own terms, as a ray of sunshine. Just like an old friend 🤍

I've been watching you ever since I was in highschool, right around the Baking with Layton era, and even back then, I loved watching those videos for you! Of course Dodie, Jack, Tom and the others being there too was nice, but even back then, I always loved the videos for the personality you gave to them. Over the years, I stayed subscribed, and watched one of your videos ever so often when I came out, especially the vlogs, because I sincerely wanted to know how you were doing - it was really like those others already described it, it was like sitting down for a talk with an old friend. I moved to a new city during lockdown to do my bachelors and after lockdown was over, I got into boardgames again, and found a group I could play them with, and stubled over NRB looking for some boardgame content online. When I first saw you on Board Game Club, I was so extatic. You are such a great addition to the cast, and I am so happy that you have made friends there. I was so immensly rooting for you to win Lord of the Board on Friday! I can only encourage you to apply for the musical theater course, you'd ace it I'm sure, and facing rejection is something that will hurt but can heal, while regrets can stay forever (I unfortunately speak from experience). You're amazing for the person you are, and I wish you the best for the future.

I've been watching your content for as long as youve been making it. I remember you from the early Jack & Dean - sketches with that incredible Jennifer Aniston hairdo. The whole content creator group that ended up forming through those videos ended up being an incredible, heart warming time sink for me back in the 2010's. Seeing it change and coming to an end over the years was a little bittersweet but I also noticed distancing myself from the whole youtube scene as real life was taking place (school, relationships, existential crisis...etc). But the one exception is your channel...and Hazel's as well, even though she's no longer making as many videos on here. I don't know what it is exactly but there is something truly comforting and joyful in the content that you make. I love these honest chats that you're capable of having because not many people are comfortable enough to talk about these "heavier" topics regaring life, career goals or deep self reflection. And while I do miss the time you were making frequent content with your other social media (and real life) friends, I still prefer the newer stuff. It's much more personal and relatable. And whilst I don't know you as a person at all in real life, I do hope that you keep making more conent in the future. I do believe you can achieve all the goals you mentioned in the video. You are a talented person and I don't think you give yourself enough credit.

If I remember correctly I subscribed to you originally because your old friendgroup's videos led me to Baking with Layton, which I loved. From that time until now I myself have been a part of two different friendgroups that were both lifesavers and all of my heart at the time. Now... people have moved on and moved away but that's how it goes, we're all settling into a life we've chosen and that means seeing each other less. There's always that one or two people that you keep steady contact with, and it's always so nice to see them.
And that's how I feel about this channel. Like other people have said, this feels like catching up with an old friend. Your updates are a comfort watch that also gives me space to reflect on my own life, and I think that comes from how honest you are about yours. Thank you for giving us that.

for all the years i’ve watched you, in my mind you have always been the epitome of “lovely”. i know that i’m going to enjoy every single video because the way you are in them is so friendly, so delightful, like you said it feels like having a catch up with an old friend
genuinely broke my heart a bit hearing you talking about that comment someone left behind. the videos with old friends were fun but the joy, at least to me, was seeing the laughter and fun that You were having from being with them. it saddens me that there were people watching those who could not see what a delight you are
i remember getting to meet you at an mcm a few years back (i was a very beaten and bruised riddler!) and hearing you were going to be there had me so excited, and getting to chat with you for a while and finally snagging a copy of baking with layton was such a highlight! again, i walked away thinking “he really is such a lovely person”
i’ve rambled away here but i hope that this, and the rest of these comments help to ease some of your anxieties. you’re a very unique person on this platform and we are all excited to see what comes next for you! go chase those dreams!

It's why it feels like having a chat with a friend :) I don't really watch anyone from 'that era' of TH-cam these days - absolutely no hate, life just changes - but I always seem to find my way to your channel for these catch up videos. It's like curling up on the sofa with a mate and having a gossip about what's been going on for us. Your vlogs feel really genuine and true to life, security and money troubles and the like, and it's so comforting to watch as someone having the very similar dilemmas!
