Morocco instead of November blues - # 2 Cycling from Essaouira to Casablanca
Nach zwei Nächten in Essaouira verlassen wir die Stadt nordwärts, immer an der Atlantikküste entlang. Je weiter wir fahren, umso mehr weichen die Brauntöne des niederschlagsarmen Südens zugunsten von Grüntönen mit Obst- und Gemüseanbau zurück. In starkem Kontrast zum teilweise noch archaischen Leben auf dem Lande und in den kleinen Marktorten stehen die riesigen Industriezonen außerhalb der Städte Safi und El Jadida. In allen Städten, in denen wir Station machen, übernachten wir in Riads in den historischen Zentren. In den Küstenstädten El Jadida und Azzemour, die auf eine portugiesische Gründung zurückgehen, wird die Medina von mächtigen Festungsanlagen umschlossen. Der morbide Charme beider Städte zieht uns in ihren Bann. Beim Tourfinale nach Casablanca, der Wirtschaftsmetropole Marokkos, kommen wir abseits der großen Verkehrsachsen durch Siedlungen des Speckgürtels von Casablanca, in die sich nur selten Touristen verirren. Ärmliche Siedlungen treffen auf Trabantenstädte mit neuen Wohnblocks und auf die Wohngebiete der Reichen an der Atlantikküste. In knapp zwei Wochen sind wir von Agadir nach Casablanca geradelt. Und in sechs Stunden bringt uns ein Linienbus zurück nach Agadir.
After two nights in Essaouira we leave the city northwards, always along the Atlantic coast. The further we drive, the more the brown tones of the low-rainfall south fade away in favor of green tones with fruit and vegetable cultivation. The huge industrial zones outside the cities of Safi and El Jadida stand in stark contrast to the sometimes still archaic life in the countryside and in the small market towns. In all the cities we stop in, we stay in riads in the historical centers. In the coastal towns of El Jadida and Azzemour, which were founded by the Portuguese, the medina is surrounded by powerful fortresses. The morbid charm of both cities captivates us. At the tour finale to Casablanca, the economic metropolis of Morocco, we pass through settlements in the outskirts of Casablanca, away from the major traffic routes, where tourists rarely get lost. Poor settlements meet satellite cities with new apartment blocks and the residential areas of the rich on the Atlantic coast. We cycled from Agadir to Casablanca in just under two weeks. And in six hours a bus takes us back to Agadir.
