This win was special because the South Africans were meeting Nigeria for the first or second time ever and there was a talk for the struggle for the heart of Africa. Nigeria established its dominance in African football many years ago.
In those days, we said the players did not always give their best but with the benefit of hindsight, it is difficult to represent Nigeria because we have over 200 million coaches.

No feeling each other out by passing a millions times in midfield and passing to the keeper to pad out passing percentage statistics. Playing off the cuff and improvisations, just like the old classic Brazilian teams. Now watching Brazil bores everyone to sleep. I think its time that an African team wins the World Cup. Nigeria(1994-1998) and Ivory Coast(2006-2010) certainly had the teams to do it but fell short unfortunately. I think Cameroun and Senegal, Ghana teams were a step below. For me, 2 teams in africa could have won the world cup. Nigeria in 1994 (in 1998 they were strong but not as serious as in 1994) and Cameroon of 2002 (FECAFOOT finished them with a lot of stopover, money not given to players. When they arrived, they were so tired and angry against FECAFOOT). The 2 best African teams in history. I missed them so much. Cameroon of 1990 was very strong too but referee gave a lot of yellow cards and finished this team in 1/4 final against England (2nd penalty was a mistake by referee).
Also South Africa using the 3-5-2 formation against Nigeria was admirable but foolish especially when you consider the fact that Nigeria had deadly wingers like Babangida and Finidi George. Look at the amount of room Babangida had when he scored the first goal . Simply because Helman didnt track back .
The tactic that finished the South Africans in that game was their fixation on Chukwu Ndukwe, not a regular in the Nigerian team then, but the deadliest striker in the South African League as at then. It was the opening that overmanning of Chukwu Ndukwu by the Southies provided that Tijani Babangida, a full right winger just like Finidi, was brought in to explore with his better pace. And it worked as planned, making the rest a sweet history. I miss all of these heroes.
