First Gyroplane (Cavalon Autogyro) Experience at Carolina Barnstormers

  • First gyroplane experience at Anson County airport (KAFP) in North Carolina! Barry Kropelin is the founder and organizer of the event, and he graciously accepted my ask for a quick interview.
    After the interview, Barry is very nice to give me a ride on this beautiful German autogyo/gyroplane called Cavalon. Since I didn't record the intercom audio, I will reiterate what Barry told me during this flight.
    Barry used this closed cockpit Cavalon mainly for travel purpose, it can fly at 80-90 knots with 5 gallon per hour fuel rate. Not a bad travel machine!
    Taxi feels the same as in an airplane, except the seats are very close to the ground, making it feel like a racecar.
    The cockpit is mainly glass panel with steam gauges as backup. For some of you who are not familiar with rotorcraft, the pilot in command normally sits on the right side.
    Compared with tandem seat gyroplanes, Cavalon's side-by-side seat design actually creates more drag and makes it less aerodynamically efficient.
    Now we taxi to the runway and prepare for the takeoff. Barry will turn the pneumatic mode selector from Brake mode to Flight mode, in order to activate the pre-rotator.
    Now the pre-rotator is engaged, once the air builds up, the rotor blades will start spinning.
    Next, we wait until the pre-rotator to speed up to 200RPM for takeoff.
    I really enjoyed my first gyroplane experience. It's safe and smooth and also gives you a strong sense of freedom. I hope you can feel for yourself at Barry's fly-in event in the fall at Anson County airport in North Carolina.

    So much fun. My airplane flying buddies flew me to a gyro flying at Baytown TX last year in October and I got to fly my first gyro. Been in love with them for years. Now trying to convince the wife we need one for our next chapter of adventures we call life. She won't fly open cockpit, but if I ever get her in an inclosed side by side 2 seater she will love it by the time she lands.

    I just got MSFS 2020 and purchased the FlyInside Bell 47 helo. It's not quite a study level sim, but close enough. They got the flight model pretty darn close. All the controls and instrumentation are accurate to the original. They even included the MASH livery with the two gurneys attached. Not anywhere near the real thing, but it gives us dreamers a little taste of what it's like.

    Was flying gyro's in 70's. Had to teach ourselves, made our own machines, towed gliders powered, rotors, engines etc. A mate got killed in a crash from medical reasons. Authorities tested them, and concluded that if they were to have an accident they would choose to have it in a gyro, as they said that it was the safest aircraft.

    I am an Aviation buff and Gyros have always been my favorite!! I love the concept and how it’s very different and more fun to fly. I also like how it doesn’t stall which is why Juan de la Cierva invented them! (Ie. To make a very safe aircraft and fly very low speeds). But unfortunately, they got a bad rap in the 60’s-70’s because of the unsafe Bensons. Now supposedly these new cavalons are more “safe”. Though they are actually, but are still having many crashes again lately. So, I guess there’s always a risk, but which is usually due to bad pilotage or training. They also say they aren’t as good or safe during crashes as other aircraft. So 🤷🏻‍♂️ who knows. But the concept is amazing, and I love the look and feel of them and how they fly. They are also easy to fly and much cheaper than other aircraft. But I actually like the old vintage classic look (from 20’s/30’s) and original ones better. They literally looked like half airplane, half helicopter and probably much safer. I wish they would just make them like that again. Anyway, pretty neat. 👍🏼

      @barrykropelin3845 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes…you apply power to the pre-rotator prior to taking off. The pre-rotator is disengaged before the actual lift off……usually disengaged prior to beginning the takeoff roll or shortly after.

    The stick seems to be really vibrating! Is that normal? Would aerodynamic balancing of the rotor blades improve that? Of . . . is vibration simply a byproduct of having a 37 foot rotor spinning overhead.

    I like the concept of gyroplanes - except my nervous system is always focused on the risk of loosing the rotor. After all strong forces in all directions are working through a very thin metallic bar at the center. How will a bird strike against the rotor distort the balance, will the rotor destruct itself? Is data available from such cases?

    • @VincentAir
      @VincentAir  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I went to a gyroplane fly in held in northern Indiana. There were around 100 aircraft. During the flight demonstrations one of the pilots froze on the controls after touchdown. He slammed into another aircraft parked along side the active. Probably a bad decision allowing aircraft to park close to the active beyond the touchdown point. The owner of the aircraft that was struck was rescued by life flight.

    Thanks for sharing the information Vince. It was fun to see flying in North Carolina again. I learned to fly Airplanes at NC27 (Lenoir NC) when I lived in Boone. You might like to contact Lenoir Aviation Club in Lenoir and do a story about that airport... since 1954.
    I fly in southern Arizona now, Instructing along the border w/ Mexico.
    I love gyroplanes. This Gyro visited us here at KOLS (Nogales AZ) and it was fun to watch. Enjoy watching.

      Thank you Terry for the suggestion. I will for sure check out the Lenoir club which I heard that I need a permission to land there. :) Enjoy your Arizona/Mexico flying experience! I wanted to do a cross border flight to Baja originally in March.

    If the newer gyros are safer why don't the safety stat's show this. Gyro safety always has and always will be about training training training.

    Ok, so it was somewhat enjoyable..the info Barry gave at beginning 10 out of 10! The thing that SPOILS 98% of ALL You Tube videos is the MUSIC! For the love of God you people QUIT thinking we want to hear music! We DON'T! The ONLY age group that likes music on ANY YT are literally 8-10 year olds and the very odd 13-14 year olds max. Even most 15 year olds will say, "Lose the music..they don't know what to play anyway.."
    No truer words..
    So because of the music only I rate this a 2 out of 10. You could have had a 10! Spread the word..

    • @VincentAir

      Yeah I heard similar comments. I have toned down the background music quite a bit in the later videos. Thanks for the advice.

    Everyone you interview will tell you autogyros are so safe, yet you see them crashing much more often than any other craft. They all claim is due to lack of training, but I dont buy that, I have seen experienced pilots suffer accidents while taking off where any other craft would have not have any issue. So stop saying they are safer that anything else out there, they arent

    • @ultracruiser41able
      @ultracruiser41able 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry....but most gyro accidents are pilot error.....they are different than airplanes in some respects and need to be flown accordingly.

      @@ultracruiser41able it's what everyone says. Yet they keep crashing by seasoned pilots. My opinion is, they aren't as safe as fixed wing aircraft

    How, exactly, would this ever be considered to be "the safest aircraft"? If its engine(s)/rotor(s) go out/stop, you're still plummeting to the ground. And you've got even less material to protect you and absorb that impact.
    People and their stupid ass thumbnails.

    • @barrykropelin3845
      @barrykropelin3845 ปีที่แล้ว

      If engine stops……you autorotate to a landing spot.
      If your rotor falls off…..well….that’s not good.
      Doesn’t matter what the fuselage is made from…..a big enough impact is gonna hurt……as with any vehicle.

    Try not used generic music 654694.
    When balancing music don't make the music so much louder than your voice.
    Here is the thing. There is no storytelling in the video.
    It is footage of planes with generic chill step nr. 654635453 and you sometimes giving out information to the viewers.
    Also, add timestamps since half of the video is an interview.
