Very informative video. Several people have said those bearings are often shipped with nothing but thin oil lubricating them or in some cases completely dry. The rubber seal can be removed with a small pick so you can pack grease into the bearing then put the seal back in place. I don't know if it makes the bearings last longer but it certainly couldn't hurt. I like the idea of replacing it with something that allows the bearing to be easily changed. Lectric says they replace the trike instead of sending a bearing because of it being beyond the ability of many customers to replace plus if the trike has been ridden far enough with a bad bearing the axle or housing can be damaged. I've read that Mooncool sends an axle and both the inner and outer bearings but as you said, if the customer isn't able to handle the repair themselves it will likely be an expensive job at a bike shop if you can even find one that will do it.
Thanks! Solved the problem of replacing a bent axle. The Mooncool TK1 folding came with a bent axle. After quite a while, they sent the axle without instructions. You saved the day and my husband's sanity.
I have replaced the outer bearing on the Trike. I bought a bearing puller from AutoZone and modified it. I was not aware of how the axle continued beyond the bearing. I must say that you're very gutsy to have pulled the axle out for the video. You could have done it better rather than beating on the wheel hub spacer. I have two trikes. One is making a noise that I believe is differential related because it changes when making turns and also will go away for a bit when the rear brake is tapped. It has 250 miles. The other one has 50 miles and has been silent, but just today gave a hint that all is not right. Lectric doesn't have an exploded parts diagram, which I've asked for. I don't think they have made public any plans on how to handle this problem which is not a question of if, but instead when a bearing will fail. Being that it's likely the returned Trikes are scrapped, I'd like to get my hands on a few rear ends to create a procedure. It's a shame that they haven't yet. By the way, the "thrust collars" are to hold the bearing in the holder and should prevent lateral stress on the outer race from the balls. What failed in my case was the outer race cracked in half right down the middle of it. I have videos and pictures of the whole experience on the FB Lectric Trike Usergroup. Search for "bearing".
Thank you so much! I'm on trike number 3 due to bearing/axle failure. Like you said all of these trikes will have bearing failure. They told me both trikes had bent axles and could not be repaired. I weigh 195 and ride on smooth gravel roads at top speed of 5 mph most of the time. There is going to be a lot of mad seniors before this is over.
There is enough space 🎉between the fender weld on finger and the end of the tube to install a collar. The collar must be machined to a tight fit on the outside of the tube with the tube paint removed at the end. The collar can the be locktighted and presses onto the tube. This will keep the dimensions of the tube from strtching.
ThanksYouCanDoThis! I can't tell you how glad I am to find your video. I am going to replace the bearings on the right rear axle. While up on a stand, if I keep the right wheel from spinning, the clunking noise goes away. Your other videos have helped me in the past. I really appreciate you uploading them. Subscribed right after we received our Trikes about a year ago. Thanks again.
Great video showing the left side axle removal. My right side bearing has failed. Do you have advice or a video on removal of right axle? There is no collar with hex screws for the right side.
UPDATE. Two months after my reply (see below) the Trike is on its way to Lectric on UPS rather than FedEx. The bearing cracked and was out of warranty a bit but they graciously extended it. Before shipping it, I asked to make a deal. Like a totaled car, could I buy it back to investigate the problem further? No, they said. I asked what happens when well out of warranty? The reply was a specialty bicycle repair shop can fix it. In other words, good luck, you’re on your own then.
You had the bearing in front of you. You should of greased the bearing by opening the plastic cover. The job of lubing the bike is not that big thing. You even said your bearing were rough like dirt was inside. That the lack of grease. Simple job over looked for a fun ride. You don't have to pull the axle lube your bike.
The purpose of this video was to show how to remove the axel. I belong to a few trike groups and someone had asked. I greased the bearings before putting it back together. Thank you for watching!
@@youcandothis1961 If you would of show the bearing that is showing where your movement of those axles are coming from. As you had your bike for a year without lubing your bearings. There is the problems with bearings no upkeep on oiling / greasing things. The dirt is from your bearings braking down.
Very nice video. I had bearing issues twice. The first time I sent the first trike in for a New one. Very good customer service. But afy 1300 miles had same issue. I put up a video on how I repaired it. You may be interested watching it. th-cam.com/video/ULrJnrgtPoU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_VjKHazecwd9FVp6 Thanks for the video and God bless.
You should talk to a mechanic befor you start using a steel hammer on steel and deforming the parts. Use aluminum or brass hammers or dead blow hammers.

Glad it helped! I’m going to try to do as many maintenance videos on these bikes as I can. Thanks for watching!

I’m filming a maintenance video today. I’ll look and see what it takes to remove the right side. Thanks for watching!
@@youcandothis1961 If you remove the right side axle, I will be very interested in following the method.
Do you have any experience with Addmotor trikes? I am guessing they will have the bearing/axle issues.
Really sad to hear that you’re having all these problems! If Addmotor has the same rear end then it will have those bearing problems.

Hey, if you don’t mind I’d like to hear more about what happened to your bearing. If you’d like, send me an email. youcandothis1961@gmail.com
If you buy a MOKWHEEL you will be riding more.
just kidding we need to ride one day, I have my dog trained to ride with me.
