Thanks for the good reminders, Dave. I have had this problem as well, even when my whole portfolio was just wide-range index funds (VTI/VXUS combo for the win). But even with the individual stocks I have as "cherries on top" of the bedrock index funds, I've decided through thick and thin, to treat them as if the money is gone for at least 10 years and to keep reinvesting dividends. Also, if I pick any stocks, it's usually "boring" companies with long-proven successful track records (Realty Income, Canadian Pacific Railway, Air Products & Chemicals, Coca-Cola, etc), rather than going for "flash in the pan."

Since this guy is a business owner. Here is what I would say. Imagine you are majority owner and run day to day operations of business. If the minority owners called you every day to check on the business to see what the “value was” there would be fluctuation day to day. Eventually you would tell them to stop checking in EVERY day because there are factors beyond your control that may change how the business looks day to day. But in a long period of time a good business will adapt and do well. As owners of mutual funds etc. we are that pesky very minority owner “checking in” every day. Just need to stop because it doesn’t help how you view your ownership in those business. Monthly / Quarterly “check in” great! 👍

There have been several 'lost decades' in history. 1970s, 2000s, so...it could be 2020s. You would have to buy throughout and wait for 2030s to get back in profit if this happens again.

I check my portfolio at the end of every month. I don't look at how much I've gained or lost, I look at how much I've gained or lost versus the index and versus the fund family to see if I need to adjust any of my holdings. If my large cap is performing in the top 25% of all large caps, then the fact that I'm overall down 19% is irrelevant.

I do the same thing and wonder what these idiot Dave certified "money managers" are doing!?... All I see is 100% risk on exposure and huge swings

Depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance. If somebody else is managing your money, they have to be clear on your risk tolerance, and when you may need to start withdrawing from your investments

Pay attention to your gut feeling. Move everything to cash. Then when the Dow drops to 8000 you can smile.

If you have heavy amount of money. I would agree with you. But if you have a-couple thousand in a stock. I probably wouldn’t touch it especially a dividend stock

I check regularly, however I know the mission and don't freak out if I see thinks dropping. But typically you shouldn't be looking down or behind.
