Correction : Most of the over 700 graves in the National Cemetery just behind the Gothic Chapel are Union Civil War veterans -not WWI . There are 707 Union veterans burred here. Most of the stone have a shield and the name of the regiment by state. The USCT stands for US Colored Troops. There
are a few graves of veterans of other wars including the Revolutionary, Mexican , WWI, and WWII . The last burial was in 1969 for a Viet Nam War veteran.

This is what I love most about these vlogs, is being educated on the history of these cemeteries. Thank you for this!

Something more on the fascinating and micro historical is the grave of Mary Ella's McGinnis. She died at age 5 and the story I heard many years ago was that the family has been putting flowers under the statue's arm for over 100 years, and a certain kind of candy at Easter at the base of the statue. I was also told that no one ever sees who puts the flowers and toys and candy on the grave. The statue alone is well worth the search for it. It is beautiful. Amazing to see something like this tradition get passed down for generations!!
