i've just lived my life normally and all this info has basically fallen into my head accidentally without me doing anything. it's not like i've ever read oliver twist or been to the riviera. how do you somehow avoid learning these kinds of things? i genuinely don't get it. it's not like he's from a different culture or language.
He’s American which could contribute to avoiding both of those bits of information, Americans rarely care about the finer details of geography or history outside their country. Not getting the word trite, I don’t have any explanation for.

When you have half of the letters in a word, there's only so many words that fit in that place, and with the context provided, this 99% results in you knowing what word fits without knowing it was the answer to that question. You don't need to know what "Mark's mark" is to realize that "whis_ey" should be whiskey, or that a place in france is riviera to get "rivi_ra". I wouldn't get nearly as many crosswords completed without this, since I'm also European and a lot of stuff nyt puts into their games is based on american culture.
