  • Mike Sleath is the touring drummer for international artist Shawn Mendes. He has played hundreds of shows and has played for some of the largest crowds you can imagine. And for Mike, electronics are a staple and a must-have when he hits the road. From simple triggers to sample pads, each added element allows him to tailor his playing for Shawn and to create the best possible experience for the audience.
    By adding triggers to his kit Mike is able to dial in the perfect sound for each song. In addition, he is also able to change and add to his sound during the song itself. By adding a sample pad to his arsenal Mike is able to trigger loops and backing tracks, add layers to his kit and customize his performance however he likes. If the song needs something extra, Mike can and will deliver.
    That is the importance of electronics in modern drumming. No matter the scenario electronics allow you to deliver the best experience for your audience, your band, and, ultimately, yourself.
    So what can you, as a drummer, do to ensure you keep up with modern trends and add more to your performance? What can you do to become the ultimate gigging drummer? That's what this video is all about.

      I'm more of a fan of trigger pads (such as the Roland PD8 and BT1) than I am triggers on acoustic drums. The gate application is genius, but I'm not a fan of sample replacement or samples layered with acoustic sounds. I prefer getting the best possible sounds out of my drums, and if I want an electronic sound, I'd hit the e pad.

Layering sounds, loops, adding effects in conjunction with that real acoustic sound.... This is the next Phase of Percussions.. Playing an Island type beat, and being able to layer in some steel drums and various indigenous percussion instruments takes the track to another level..

    Wow, what a really cool and useful video. I have owned an electronic kit in the past, but currently only have an acoustic kit. I do like the way that you used the electronics and the acoustic combined as it gave some added flavor to the sounds. I have an SPD with acoustic triggers on snare, rack, floor, and kick. One scene on the SPD will be just sound effects on the pads. The next scene is a duplicate of the first, but with triggers engaged. Usually like an 808 on the kick and a clap on the snare. It really bumps up the intensity from a verse to a chorus. I use a foot switch to go back and forth from triggers to clean acoustic. SPD is fantastic. I’ve run backing tracks and loops off of it as well. #1 sample I use is a giant low sweep (AKA “The Brown Note” 😆.)

    What SL manages to do/control *whilst* he's playing the songs is *difficult* and *impressive* , and it's terrific/very informative that he gives us here some insight into what's going on with the drums during the performance, but I was never a fan of the "Pink Floyd-style" of performance, where the idea was to re-create the original album/songs *exactly* . --- What SL is doing here is *so* far beyond what is involved in my own performances with my Band, and I wonder if the Audience at the SM-Shows can *really* hear/appreciate SL's efforts.

    A lot of comments talk about how this isn't as real as a real drum kit.
    But the samples are layered with the acoustic drum's sound for that variety acoustic kits have, while also having the pure punch & consistency a lot of samples have.
    And besides, in records acoustic kits are very very often EQ'd to hell and back, with lots of muffling techniques and tricks to make them fit in the song better. I fail to see how layering triggers ontop of an acoustic kit is any different.
    The difference in sound from in-person to in-record of an acoustic kit is already huge, biggest culprits are the cymbals, hit one in real life, you'll be able to hear it ringing for a solid minute straight, in a song, it's gone within a few beats.
    Electronics are already very present, and at the end of the day it helps make all kinds of different sounds to make different types of music. Electronic kits's existence doesn't suddenly delete all other artists using acoustics, and vice-versa ;)

    • @ejsinner1520
      @ejsinner1520 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In person your drums should sound bigger and better than on record. And that cymbal argument doesn’t hold water for those of us that know how to hit/play them correctly. Peace out

    • @trollakhinmemeborn3278
      @trollakhinmemeborn3278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ejsinner1520
      They definitely sound different in person, whether or not it is better is up for personal taste.
      Even with a slight finger nudge I can hear a cymbal ring, assuming I'm not wearing ear plugs, but then, isn't that a form of EQ-ing already, muffling your hearing? These sounds will never be heard in a mix, way too quiet, never will be heard in a concert either. Where the kit is mic'd up anyway.
      Maybe in a small jazz room venue? But then you're also limiting what you can do with the cymbals because hitting them too hard will make the front row go deaf...

    • @ejsinner1520
      @ejsinner1520 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trollakhinmemeborn3278 I said,”should sound bigger and better.” “Should” so many variables could affect that.
      And I was referring to controlling your cymbals with your hand technique regardless of venue, or in ears, or stage monitors, or whatever. The control should always be in your hands first, technology second.

    • @trollakhinmemeborn3278
      @trollakhinmemeborn3278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ejsinner1520 Yeah for sure, shouldn't have to rely on dampened microphones to make a proper soft cymbal sound.
      My original comment was about how what we associate with a true acoustic kit sound, rarely is the actual sound coming from the drums. Either because they were muffled, or EQ'd in the record. Even on a concert microphones & effects are present.
      Only in very small jazz venues could you hope to hear the actual drumkit's sound.
      So I feel like calling kits like this, where an acoustic kit's actual sound is just layered ontop with triggers that add some otherwise impossible to get sounds, isn't a "cheating" or "fake" kit to me, it may have more electronics going than an acoustic one, but rarely are acoustic kids truly "acoustic" to begin with. If that makes sense.
      Since that is a feeling that I often see in comment sections about edrums.
      Besides, modern drum ekits do in fact have some sort of dynamics, although you could crank the volume down and hammer it during a shuffle, it wouldn't be good drumming, as the dynamics would be lost.
      If you were to properly use it instead, you'd need to ghost your notes as much as on an acoustic kit.
      Of course there's less nuance, especially with the hi-hats, which is the reason I invested into an acoustic kit, but it's still more than enough for a lot of music.
      And with kits such as this one where it's both at once, I kinda see it as a best of both worlds, you could have proper acoustic sounds, mixed with impossible electronic sounds for a really rich instrumental that still gives the musician full control over his tools.
      Cheers

    I love all the hate I'm reading here in the comments about edrums, it makes me love my Roland VAD 506 kit even more. Oh man, it just goes to show you who's actually played on real ekits, and who's looking at the low end tier crap that's been out since the 80's. Go ahead and keep complaining while I setup for recording in under 60 seconds, at 2:00am or whenever I like. I don't have much experience on acoustic kits, but enough so that I can say with certainty that the ekit I have plays very similar, especially the snare (I have the digital snare, it's outstanding). Yep it's expensive, and most things that are out of people's financial abilities get bashed on to make those that can't afford them feel better. Having a good acoustic kit (if you can play it without getting cops called) and a good ekit for practice and home recording is ideal. The days of hotspotting and machine gunning are gone, at least on the kit I personally play. I guess what I'm getting at is please don't knock something unless you've tried it for youself, you might be real surprised. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have a nice acoustic setup in my garage or a basement when the time comes that I have more space. But given my current living situation (2 small kids, a not so nice cop for a neighbor), my ekit is my saving grace for still being able to play drums of any kind. I'm very grateful for it for this very reason. Happy drumming everyone, ekit or acoustic (or both, hybrid's are really becoming a thing).

It really is just about what you do with it and what sounds you are trying to achieve. The reason I play acoustic is because it is appropriate for my sound. There are plenty of situations where my kit would be inappropriate too.

    Title and thumbnail are misleading. Thought it was going to be,”here’s what you can do.” Not,” here’s what I do for this gig.” Oh well.

    Or they could just do it with live tracks. Or not have a drummer at all. Things arent so certain

    Sounds like Shawn Mendes doesn’t need a drummer

      Yeah, a playback would do just fine for this type of music, but good for the dude.

      True, but the inclusion of a live drummer is essentially like having a dancer on stage, for visual entertainment. Shawn Mendes could just use a backing track for everything and not have anyone else on stage and have no visuals/lighting and still perform, but it wouldn’t be interesting to watch.
      The inclusion of a live drummer is for visual aesthetic more than anything else for this type of music.

      @@adamalexanderray your answer has all the arguments to stop making music like this... It's not about music anymore, but money, and other business interests.

      @ well if this music makes people happy and they enjoy it then I’m all for it.
      Not that I’m interested in modern pop, but I wouldn’t want to deny others the joy of it. There’s plenty of music out there for everyone and we should all try and be as open and positive as possible to other peoples tastes.

    This set up is not practical for the average gigging drummer.
