  • The global economy is in big trouble. The IMF has slashed its forecast for global growth this year to 3.2 %. The world's economic growth had rebounded to 6.1% in 2021, but 2022 will see a major slowdown. The United States is on the verge of a recession. China's economy has slowed down. In our neighbourhood, Sri Lanka's economic crisis is there for the world to see. Pakistan is facing record high inflation. The UK is facing a massive cost-of-living crisis, which has turned into a political issue for voters. The headwinds are here in India too and we can all feel it. India has been battling inflation, a falling rupee, and high unemployment. Despite all this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphatically told the Parliament that India is doing better when compared with the rest of the world. She has said there is no question of India going into recession. So, what is the economic outlook for India? Joining us now is economist and former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan.

This is obvious because this guy's education (Phd) was in banking/finance. He has no clue/knowledge about MACROECONOMICS. Also no wonder why this guy ended up in IMF, because usually top merit students of MIT/Harvard end up into private institutions where they get paid heavily. This is the same guy who increased interest rates on loans - which made MSME unable to function. This causes closing down of MSMEs and thereby unemployment increased. As a result, purchasing power parity of people reduced, which ultimately led to the decline in demand.

Manufacturing is key for any nations pride and independence. Lazy workforce, political interference, uncertain labour laws, poor skillsets and tough competitors like China makes impossible for Indian industries to have sustainable manufacturing activities. It is really shame as countryman buying even our God status made in China. Inconsistent polices, lack of vision also is key for not investing in manufacturing sector. It requires deep thinking how we can revive our manufacturing sector. Corona vaccine is best lesson to learn. Hope earlier indian young generation understand that their are no short cuts to success better It will be for nation.

@VP I am not impressed by anyone, unless he/she fits into my simple logic. Raghuram Rajan may be an acclaimed economist but he is limited by his political biases like any other economist.
The government must be taken to task whenever it brings in policies that eventually dent India's growth. At the same time it must be applauded whenever it should be.
So far the government has fared well. It perhaps could do better. Pace of reforms is very slow. A few political decisions too have been bad.
India is definitely poised for a glorious future.

Rajan Sir is one economist ( a rare breed) who not only takes a nuanced and well- balanced views on the searing issues which barricades Indian economic growth, but most importantly, offers pragmatic solutions to them. The Indian powers that be should take heed of his advices,, especially on arresting inflation, offering better quality jobs to the employment, especially through self-driven entrepreneurship schemes, and most of all, take the Opposition parties and public in critical decision- making. India is a larger country, when compared to her sub-continental neighbours, so it is important that India adopts a leadership role model for the rest to follow suit.

I come from Uttarakhand; indeed, its remotest district Pithoragarh. I am in touch with my village and visited there only last week. One painful observation is most people have moved out of Uttarakhand for greener pastures. These who are in Uttarakhand-mainly Government employees- have migrated to nearby cities leaving very few in the villages. Those left in the villages are enjoying the houses built through Government grants, walk on the paved ways and have access to water, electricity and cooking gas like never before. They also receive various other benefits including MNREGA. The net result is agriculture and horticulture, which was the main occupation earlier, is completely closed. Fancy schemes are tried-tea plantation, dairy, animal husbandry with limited or no success.
In my young days they said Uttarakhand has money order economy as a large number of people served the armed forces and brought home their pay-packets and rum. Both were inputs to the local activity and had good and bad impact. But now the Uttarakhandis who have migrated outside do not send money orders! They earn and spend in various parts of the country and the world. So the local economy only produces human resources and exports them for nothing in return. Local economy is dependent on Government largesse. Politicians are happy distributing largesse and managing a grossly inefficient Government machine. Thousands of teachers receive crores of rupees in salaries while the children move to private schools in cities as t Government schools do not provide the appropriate education in their perception.
I think all this is policy generated. Serious rethink and correction is required. I will be happy to know Dr. Rajan's views on it.

Interesting points, though I think we should aim at transitioning to a society governed by industrialisation 4.0, where we retrofit each and every household with the amenities of day to day life, like washing machines, dishwashers, roombas, microwaves, and run a gig economy that takes care of everyday shopping responsibilities and make all buses and trains AC. The very process of retrofitting itself would generate so many jobs that it would be enough to keep the economic engine humming for the interim process. In order for all this to be successful we must build the various amenities indigenously. One way to do that would be to hack the processes of manufacturing them, if possible by interning at the plants abroad where they are made. Once enough people come to muster the know how for doing so, we must return back to the country and start manufacturing them from scratch. An interesting Feynman story will illustrate my point. When he was at MIT, Feynman was in awe of the particle accelerator in residence, it was huge and impressive and all that, but somehow they were hardly producing any results. On the other hand the Princeton group was on fire and was producing results at a rapid clip. So when he relocated to Princeton for graduate studies, the first thing Feynman did was visit their lab, and at first he was completely underwhelmed, it seemed anything but impressive, it was much smaller and apparently ramshackle. There were wires protruding all over, various places dripping glyptal, and similar stuff. It was then that he realised that this was the precise reason for their success. They were thick enough into the nitty gritties to actually know their stuff inside out. This is what we need to achieve with our manufacturing base. So that when something goes wrong we are not left floundering and dysfunctional. And Sadhguru would tell you that you don’t need the usual run of the mill education to achieve it, for all practical purposes, Sadhguru failed the education system, but he I believe retained his curiosity and mental capacity enough to take on the challenge of building an industrial plant from scratch. So all we need to focus on is how he managed to do it, and well, what do you know, he is alive and kicking. So instead of wasting our resources on mind numbing rote education, we should investigate into how to produce Sadhgurus by the millions, and we will be back on track. Once we can manage to manufacture things indigenously that function, we will truly be on the path to be the world beaters that we potentially are. India is a sleeping leviathan that is slowly awakening. Lulled to sleep and in thrall of a foreign culture and way of life that was not ours from the beginning, we need to embrace our roots once again and borrow from the west their scientific genius, adapting it into our way of life in our own way. And our roots lie in religion, but of the man making sort, we must see it as a means, not an end in itself, and use it to build muscles of iron and nerves of steel no less, and yet have enough compassion in our hearts to lift each other up by the bootstraps. Jai Hind.

    • @ajaymathur9406
      @ajaymathur9406 ปีที่แล้ว

So you say our roots lie in religion but the same religion today is being used today for hatred and toxicity. We need a scientific mindset to move forward and not keep looking backward and appreciating so called past glory. Something said and spoken thousands of years back May not necessarily be true and relevant today. Growth will not come from banging utensils and tongs from the balcony of homes 🏡 in the similar way corona didn’t go anywhere by banging Thalees on sitting in a temple for 24 / 7. People need to do stuff and that’s how west developed once they moved away from right wing Christian crusades.
Everyone thinks their Religion is the best and has all the answers tthats where all the problems and strife comes from. That’s superstition not spirituality. Stop pushing the country on the path of fantastic imagination about religious glory. That’s why Pakistan did since it’s creating and we all can see where they are. countries obsessed with religions like Pakistan , Iraq, Afghanistan and many more are all in dumps. Keep your beliefs personal to yourself and not shout in the middle of the road to assert its superiority. We don’t need Nazis in India, in the end Nazi only achievement was Auto 🚗 Bahns and nothing else

Education development, Trading are hallmarks of the minority community intervention in Kerala... Shri Raghu Ram Rajans comments are to the point..

We need to know that from 2007 there has been no investment in manufacturing and even the existing manufacturers were sourcing from China and south east asia.THIS IS BECAUSE OUR COST OF MSNUFACTURE IS VERY HIGH LIKE POWER, FINANCIAL COST, cost of logistics etc. all these are being addressed. only when our cost is comparable to other countries people invest. our corporate tax was very high and this also prevents companies to invest. He was amazed to see Paran Das was also sleeping in the corner of the balcony.
Bhutnath Babu got sentimental. He awakened the man and asked ‘Well, Paran, are you going somewhere?’
Paran yawned and said ‘ that is what I am thinking’.
What do you mean that you say you are thinking? Don’t you have any place?
I have but there is nobody there. That’s why I don’t want to go. Please remember my advice. Old houses many a times become lucky.
The man was about to go. Bhutnath Babu resisted, ‘If you start in the evening now the night will be over when you will reach. Today I entered the new house, you are guest. You may stay. There are three-four rooms. Can’t you sleep on the empty bags?
Paran Das didn’t argue., he stayed. Bhutnath Babu’s wife didn’t object much when he was plain and simple village man. She only asked ‘are you sure he is not a thief?’.

‘Yes, Babu. Now give a look inside the hole”.
Bhutnath Babu gave a glance inside the hole in the dim light of the lamp and found a black vessel type something.
‘Let’s get down Babu. Very heavy. We two cannot lift it’.
Bhutnath Babu was trembling in excitement. He said, What is there inside?’
‘You will see if we lift it. Let’s come, Babu. Give me a hand’.
Bhutnath Babu went down. Then both of them lifted the vessel which was closed with lot of difficulties.
Paran smiled and said, ‘now please open it, your own property’.
It was a big vessel made of brass. It was closed with a lid tightly. The lid was opened with an iron rod and then the gold coins glittered in the light of the lamp.
