The X-Files: Resist Or Serve Game Review (2004)
In this review I cover a PS2 title that has seemed to be as much of a mystery as alien themselves. I love the tv show The X-Files and seeing as this game threw together my favorite show and my favorite survival horror game Resident Evil how could they go wrong? Well they went wrong, very wrong. How? Watch and find out as my pain turns into madness, will I resist or serve?

I haven't played this one but I still have fond memories of the PS1 game. It was full of such odd moments. I loved shining my flash light on people to see how they react. The gameplay was also all over the place. It was basically a first person adventure game but there were moments when you had to do real FBI work, like a detective. I remember searching all over a warehouse looking for a cigarette butt (though the game doesn't tell you what you're looking for).
The journal entries deff left a lot out to help you out as the player. You would be better off taking your own notes lol

This was actually a really solid game with a decent story. It's set in the 7th Season, which is well past 'peak' X-Files, but the game still manages to remain engaging and lore-bound.
For a PS2 release, this pushed AV boundaries. Those character models may not look like much _now_ , but the fact that their faces are even _recognizable_ is a testament to the visual care put into this game. The sound design and original score were welcome additions that really sold the game as a series of "Episodes" tied-in with the rest of the show. It's a shame this didn't get a multi-console release, as the Xbox really could have pushed this to the next level (480p+, 5.1 surround, smoother gameplay, better particles/lighting).
The controls are a bit clunky, but they're standard for the survival/horror genre. Playing through the same 'level' ("Episode") is a novel idea, though it likely would have served the game better if the developers had lifted yet another aspect from TV/film: cutting to the other character's perspective _within_ the Episode. (There are some visual cuts/PiP, but control remains with a single character.) It gets a pass as no other AAA game did this at the time, and it definitely works (it just may _seem_ repetitive at times).
Plot twists, charater interactions, grand revelations, returning cast members, and heightened tension are all representative of the show, and it plays out exceedingly well.
There's a reason why this game still commands full retail (or more), even in used condition. If you loved the X-Files and wished they made *more* *episodes* (that weren't the 2016 reboot), this is your hidden gem.
As a fan of both RE and X-Files i could not resist this game.

I have seen this game many times in the wild way back. I always just give it a pass. Glad I did, and the faces are creepy looking. Wonder how the PS1 games are. Love the intro to this review. Its great when you make those.

But the game is a blast for me. Its like playing resident evil outbreak but with the cut scenarios restored here. Most of your rants regarding the game are mostly nit picky and just comparing the game's story to the show. Which is fine. But if you prefer a story accurate driven X files game, play the PS1 X files, the game is point and click and has interactive cutscenes like you're part of the show actively participating. But for us, we like games to be fun, blasting zombies and exploring open ended areas.

Rather play: Cold Fear, The Suffering 1&2, The Thing, Extermination, Psi Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy, etc.
Btw, Did you ever try, Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn, for the PS1?
If you can get the game for 5 bucks I would say yea get it but no higher. Never tried that game.

Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn is a neat little action game that used tank controls and similar camera angles. It's basically the PS1 equivalent of the action films Broken Arrow and Under Siege 2.
Fun, but I fully admit the Syphon Filter Trilogy were better 3rd person action games.

@RETRO OR DIE, Nice, I don't think I had Game Informer back then. But I might've had an issue of Game Pro or one of those PlayStation magazines that no longer exist.
Great series, Syphon Filter. It's unfortunate that Sony offed the franchise during the PS2/PSP years.
Much rather have a great new Syphon Filter, a remake, or HD Remasters for the classic trilogy than Days Gone.
I got this as an xmas gift hoping i was going to enjoy it, how wrong i was. I actually enjoyed the first levels when you start off in red falls as i loved the atmosphere and exploration of the town leaving you to figure out where to go and what to do by yourself, finding keys to unlock new areas, hidden codes etc. I even quite liked the FBI HQ level. However, when I reached the level in Mulder's campaign where you enter russia and had to fight the avatar boss that keeps resurrecting them dogs that constantly drain your health that move so quick it can be tough to have time to react with your gun. Became so frustrated at that stage i eventually gave up.
I had to ignore the unrealistic mechanics and almost literally drag out the ingredients of what made x files good while playing this.
1. The voice actors, check
2. OG x files ost from the actual show, check
3. Kicking every single annoying a.i. in the dick. Check
4. Mulder and scully's legit reaction to small scenes in the game when you came across them.
Buuuuut yeah, it dragged on my mental illness... The levels were tedious, your review is golden bruh got a like from me

Glad i watched this before making my decision to buy this game. They run for like $100+ these days. Luckily the ps1 game is like 10$ and its pretty decent from what i saw

@@RETROORDIE it's kinda complicated and requires reading the manual, otherwise you're guaranteed to get stuck, but at least it had the general feeling of an x files episode.
