Bike chain into ball&socket stopmotion joint

- This is how you can make a ball and socket joint for cheap and with very little tools. From the beginning of stop motion bike chain joints have been used in puppet armature bodies. It is not the most strong joint but it avoids you most of the work as there are 2 holes already made precisely in place.

Qué guay, es muy original
You can use small chains sizes for small puppet.
Hi sir! can you make a video tutorial on how to remove a stop motion rig? 🙂
I really appreciate your tutorials. Animation equipment can be so difficult in the beginning. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Edu, I love you man! I am soooooo thankfull for your channel to exist!
I love the way you make. I already tried but differently.
That’s genius Edu!!
this is very nice. keep up making these videoes edu. i really like to see what you can use to make ball & socket joints. i will try this.
That's a cool idea, might have to try that eventually
Muy bueno, muy didáctica la explicación. Muchas gracias Edu. Saludos desde Argentina
Amazing idea!!! Loved watching it!
Brilliant! Thank you.
Grande Edu, saludos desde Argentina
my friend thanks a lot for the tip for months i am looking for a simple way to make articulation for my toy art you helped me a lot
nice sharing!
greeting from tokyo JAPAN!
Very cool technique. We have to adapt our resources to our needs.
indeed
thats a great work thank you sir for sharing it🙏🙏🙏
I admire you!
Wonderful trick !
Cool idea. Thanks
You are Very smart 👌, King Stop Motion Tutorial Keep Going
Nice idea. Maybe you can use 2 pieces at each side instead of welding them to make it stronger. Or a washer at each side, so the board of washers falls over the spheres and distant from the center where the scrull presure bends the piece. I´ll try it
hello, from brazil.. man you're great, keep making videos like this one.. stop motion is art!!
Hey, thanks!
Hey, olha o Brasil representando aqui!
You should have used an h25 chain which links are pretty much like the plates you normally use in your projects
thank you very much. There are many tutorial videos, but this is possible for me
Exelente. Gracias
This is cool
Your video gave me an idea.
I will soon make a video and share it.
👍❤️👍
I love making things... 😁
Your videos are very good and creative, here in Brazil we have difficulties in acquiring material for stopmotion
I know it is harder some places, but, use your imagination and use things like bike chains and ball bearings
TKS MAN!
Thankyou.
There is a shop down the street called "Nutty Bolts" that supplies new and used hardware. I bet they just might have a set of used bearings.
Go for it
Hello Edu, what is the melted substance inside when you combine the ball and the shaft? Your works are very creative, you inspire, good work👋
It might be easier to knock the pins out if you heat the chain first and let the pin loosen up as it cools.
hi edu do you think you could make 1 of movie 9 by shane acker for a future video?
Which size threaded balls should you buy for a bike chain?
Just a note - you can remove those chain pegs more easily with a bike 'chain tool'. No hammering required. Give it a quick Google search and you'll see what I mean.
Thanks, I know them, I don't have it and we are in Lockdown so... hard way
@@edupuertasfruns fair enough. What you did works just fine. Stay healthy!
This is awesome!! I have a question though. is there anyway of doing the ball and socket joints but smaller than this? I saw someone using the rotating base of an old TV antenna.. any thoughts?
okay i found the answer to this question in one of your other videos. here is the link if anyone is interested th-cam.com/video/SceO2u-p838/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=edupuertas
I did this in my experimentation. I used motorcycle chain. I could never get them to track well. They would always move in arcs.
This kind of movement in arcs not where you want to move the ball means at least one hole is not aligned properly
I’m curious to make this myself! What specific bike chain did you use?
Just one lying around
Where do you buy the balls for this? Do you think I might find them at a hardware store, or are they specialty equipment?
they are quite special, search at stopmotion stores
I took balls from a ball bearing and drilled it. Didn't make any threads inside but directly fused the rods into the balls by welding
@@doctor.sreeraj I have seen people make notches in the rod with a Dremel and using JB Weld instead. That's the route I'd go, cleaner and easier. Hopefully strong enough.
I wonder if piercing balls would do the job? piercingmania.co.uk/surgical-steel-screw-balls?gclid=CjwKCAjwrKr8BRB_EiwA7eFapkF-TLznFGXc6P4RAWpDx5jcOWKcKHdTSLJIYJ29XoEOxWpPwXI7iBoCYe4QAvD_BwE#7
Tip how to drill a ball bearing, heat it up cherry red and let it cool. The ball is now softer , get ball held in multi grips and grind off a flat surface with sanding /grinding wheel.
Place into a hollowed out area v area on a vice on a drill press.
Centre punch the centre of the flat section.
Use a cobalt drill and drill a hole. Silver solder a rod to the ball.
If you want the ball to be rock hard reheat it then quench it in water! But you usually won’t need to.
which app do you use to make the stop motion
Nyc
This is fantastic! I have a question for you Edu , I’m looking at Shaun the sheep character, is he made of silicone ? If that’s true how can I cast something in silicone ? Can I cast silicone in a silicone mold ? Also, how do you think that they make his eyes blink ? Are they silicone replacements too or are they just plasticine ? What about his mouth ? I’m assuming that’s silicone too, or resin ?
I know this is a big question, but I hope you can help me! I’m trying to understand stop motion
They mix parts in silicone and others in resin. The molds for silicone parts are made in a strong resin
edu puertas with this helps a lot. Thank you for always teaching us!
Pregunta...
I have a question.
What kind of oil do you dip it in to, after you heat the metal?
I normally use recicled oils from machine motors
You can also use vegetable oil instead motor oil is toxic
@@ranecote Thank you!
Where do you get the six mm ball and screw
Edu hi, which type of drill bit you used for it? Regular bit did not work for me.
You have to heat treat first the steel. Then will work
Did you quench your ball and rod in oil too? Or was that water?
Just used water here
What are the threaded balls on the rods and how do I find them?
Ball bearings , ask in hardware stores
the 6mm ball.. where do you get? it`s from bike too?
Can I take even a cycle chain
They make a tool that's specifically designed to split bike chain rivets, though I guess if you're good enough with a punch it might be unnecessary for these destructive purposes.
For one time in your life, don't think so
@@edupuertasfruns I'm talking about the kind of person who can sink a nail with one hit, really. Which I've done precisely twice.
What are the balls called or where to find them?
Oh i found them threaded balls. They're pretty expensive, is there a way to get them cheaper?
can i buy pre made puppets(online)? if so where?
I make them at kineticarmatures.com
where did you buy the 6mm balls?
Online
Are you in Spain or still in Britain
I am back to Spain
As i told you, i made this last week from a motor cycle chain which is strong and thick. I could never find the balls. So i took 8mm balls from a ball bearing and made holes in it to push the rods into it and fused it with a torch. I also made the holes in the plates a bit wider to lodge the balls into it perfectly. Everything is ready. But brother, i have no idea how to make the small and precise movements of those joints on a rig. Please do a video to make it painless to make movements or any hacks to make the movements easier. I want my puppet to do yoga. And do you have any videos to dress up a an armature into a puppet?
Great, then you are so close to start.
@@edupuertasfruns can you get us a video showing the minute movements of armatute? Do you already have it in your channel?
Ball armature

Can you give me a stop motion puppet armchair 😊😊🙏
Get a chain cutter you can make a business out of chains
I made this years before
It's not my invention
First
cool, but way too much work. I'd rather buy an armature
