THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY 4K UHD REVIEW + LATEST PURCHASES

Arrow Films recently released this 4K disc of The Long Good Friday. It does not come with a Blu-ray in the pack so I have been unable to compare the two options but Arrow did issue the Blu-ray some years ago although that does not appear to have had the re-worked Dolby Atmos sound option, only the original mono sound.
It is another fine release from Arrow Films but I should have mentioned the usual, occasional soft focus shot because some often think that those slight errors on the day of filming are something to do with the cine to video transfer which, of course, they are not.
Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1. Originally made in 1979 the backers initially tried to sell to an ITV company (Independent Television) for £1m but thankfully the director, producers and main cast fought them and Handmade Films stepped in to give us a theatrical release. I did mean to say in the review though, that occasionally this fine film does have the look and feel of a television movie so it's not perfect. Early on a cast member appears to say the wrong word in a sentence when he delivers his line which, if I'm correct, no one spotted on the day and so it somehow made it through to the final cut. Also, the single sex scene (showing a naked couple in bed), the actress appears to be smiling when her partner is dragged away for a bit of torture. I think she was grimacing but it didn't look quite right. These are minor criticisms that I felt I should mention given how some people respond if such things are not covered.
