    Nice drone shots as always. It really shows the lay of the land and provides perspective on those contours - I recall either you or Travis commenting how this farm is both the flattest and most hilly of all your ground. Those aerial shots showed it. Here's hoping that grass grows in nicely and provides the yield Travis is looking for.

    It's great to see the fields and countryside. Travis is overdue for a bumper year with dry hay in the barn. 2nd crop is the game changer when all the inputs pay back dividends. Good luck with a great year.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hay crop is looking pretty heavy, it’ll be a good if we can get it made without that extra water dumped on it after cutting 💦

    • @eddeetz493
      @eddeetz493 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you can log some hardwoods, seal the ends, get them all cut at the next farm day by a local Mobil mill. No better time to log than during a fence row cleanup. Goodluck. You make more silvo pasture as well.

    Around here the grass we use for hay isn’t seeded down. Fields are established with tops usually I think. Jiggs Bermuda is a common one here.

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah hybrid bermudagrass has to reproduce vegetatively since the seed is sterile. Either dig roots or plant tops, either one is really expensive and pretty risky, though tops are cheaper and less risky, but if it turns dry and doesn't rain after it's planted it can hold on a little longer than the roots and is cheaper if you have to redo it... Think the red machines might be taking over the farm😜. Good setup there nice it's giving the 7600 a workout. Now that was some steep slopes there never really seen them like that before 😳 bet that can get entertaining 😯. Nice video you don't half pack in the information 👍👌 Stay safe 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    What's missing from the soil that the Corn and Beans won't grow?
    Also is it more profitable to sell hay or grass seed?

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably too wet... river comes up and breaks its banks and floods it out I bet. Grass can handle wet feet FAR better than crops can. Later! OL J R :)

    Is that the Mississippi in the distance?

  • @hturbo1007
    @hturbo1007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What's up with the soil? Why doesn't it yield very well with row crops? Is it because of flooding?

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has gumbo which is pretty much 100% clay. It retains water too well and ends up getting boggy

    • @hturbo1007
      @hturbo1007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowFarmsWork I know the soil. I'm in Dubuque county and we had a small farm with it. It would only yield decent if it was fall chiseled and worked dry in the spring. Then hope for timely rains throughout the season because it got rock hard if it didn't.
