  • Qiddiya is one of those projects that wouldn’t look out of place as the backdrop to a science fiction film. A tourism megaproject three times larger than Walt Disney World that is intended to disrupt not just the Middle East, but the world, and at the centre of it all… is a Six Flags theme park soon to be home to the world's tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster - Falcon's Flight.

    Of all the Arab states, KSA is the one least accomodating to tourists (particularly women). Entirely different kettle of fish to UAE, Kuwait, Qatar etc. I could see this park being popular with visitors from other GCC countries, but without a major reformation of tolerance to non Islamic visitors I really struggle to see it attracting anyone outside of coaster enthusiasts from further afield.

    • @Ellie-rx3jt
      @Ellie-rx3jt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Like, if you want to go with your girlfriend/boyfriend, you'll have to book seperate hotel rooms. It's illegal to share a room if unmarried. Which is actually true in Kuwait and Qatar as well, but they rarely ask westerners if they are married, or at least tend not to ask for proof. But KSA has a reputation for actually requiring documentation/proof of marriage.

      It's for the Muslim world - what of it? It's not for you; you and your neoimperialistic entitlement don't matter. The Islamic world is huge and growing. Westerners flatter themselves, thinking everyone wants them coming for tourism. News flash: no one else with money wants Westerners around them, with their neocolonial entitlement and imperiousness, being judgemental of local traditions, beliefs, and practices, bringing chaos and destruction with them.

      A theme park isn't going to "disrupt the world" if it's only for people from one religion, mate. @Adam Alqahtani No, I'm not from the EU. I also don't hate Muslims, Arabs, or Islam, or any peoples at all for that matter. I hate the UAE's government and I hate any religion that causes infringement on the rights of others.
      I was raised Christian and recently deconstructed and learned how much of a negative impact religion had on my mental health.
      With Islam and the UAE people's lives are ruined, taken, and oppressed constantly and its sickening.
      I mentioned in another thread that I don't have an issue with Islam itself as it has been integrated into most societies fine and I've known some great muslims. The issue is what is happening in the US right now and what has happened in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia for most of history. Religion is influencing laws and oppressing people and that is unacceptable, at least the US is still free religiously even with its issues, buy in the Middle East, UAE, etc. there is no freedom like that and they have dozens of documented human rights abuses beyond Islam, too. Just look at the Qatar World Cup issues.

    • @MagicCookieGaming
      @MagicCookieGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Adam Alqahtani I never said the west doesn't have its issues, actually I explicitly stated it has its issues.
      The difference is in the West, even with our issues, we still have freedom to practice any religion, or not any religion, we want. I can explore my sexuality, my kinks, etc. I can be free to express myself without fear of being killed. I can walk with my girlfriend on a hike and she can wear whatever she wants. We can book a hotel room and keep our private life private.
      These are just the small things. We also won't get killed, beaten, or stoned for living how we want and she doesn't have to cover herself if she doesn't want to.
      These are still small freedoms that the Middle East has taken from everyone. It is undeniable, Sharia law is a plague on humanity.

    I'm always very skeptical about such plans, especially when they are planned in this region. I know Intamin was involved in the planning. But conception and planning are something completely different than the realization of such a project. In this region in particular, people like to boast about superlatives, but much of what was announced in the past was either unsuccessful or was never realized as planned. Ultimately, the money for such a park must come either from the government or from local investors, because Six Flags cannot finance such a project alone. Their business figures are far too bad for that.

    Another Saudi plan that is never going to happen. They've got a reputation for making up outrageous plans that sound great in concept but are overly ambitious and lack investors. The renders for the coaster that is supposedly coming are ridiculous and don't even appear real. And lets face it, even if this were to be built I highly doubt people would travel to Saudi Arabia for just this theme park.

So while I’m sure you are a good person, the rules of your country make it much harder for outsiders to visit for vacation.

    It is a shame they could not do this with Disney or Universal (for the IP). I guess with that kinda $$ you can buy IP, I imagine if Saudi prince is paying for this, he is calling most of the shots, not Six Flags. The Intamin coaster will be great, with the multiple launches going into giant drops, it should have a bit of a Velocicoaster feel to it, which is my favorite coaster in Orlando. That POV video is cheesy though, it obviously won't be that. I want to see what that thing looks like when they are ready to build it.

    I say to Six Flags, good luck! Because of their history and tract record with the US and how the parks are run here, I'm generally an optimist, but this will be a failure. By this years personal experience alone with Six Flags, I'm done with them. Over price gouging on admission and parking into parks for one day (+$100.00) which fails in comparison to park quality value. No new rides of substance. Carnival or kiddie rides that have been done at numerous parks before. The current CEO at Six Flags has stated before, that he wants to model the company as a Disney tier park with Disney type prices. I thought the CEO was doing this so Six Flags could be bought out cheap to investors so he could get a nice severance package. Now it makes since. He's charging the higher prices and in return, offering no value or incentives. Instead of focusing on US parks with major new rides, they'll be using the money to help fund Qiddiya. Putting all their eggs in one basket. Not a smart move. Smart move would've been with Cedar Fair amusement parks in my opinion. Just mentioning the name of Cedar Fair, people in the US recognize as a great amusement park and those around the world, including I, would want to travel there.

    For those saying this is a unfeasible mega plan this actually isn’t. Yeah the saudis do too much stuff Thats just unfeasible but this isn’t one of them. Its only a 1 billion usd which for a theme park at this scale isn’t too bad of a price and VERY low compared to all the mega projects they say there doing. Plus the people they are contracting know what they are doing.
    Also look at it from Six Flags prospective. They are not only loosing money but want to be known as a more premium brand. This is a golden opportunity for them. Rather or not the park will be successful is up for debate but it will happen.
