Probably not. The reason would be that policing has a lot of psychological trauma involved with it and then you would be at higher risk for PTSD and other issues. If it is just a temporary depression then you might still be ok.
2:24 “I don’t THINK you would be a good fit for this career”. That is the problem with psych exams. Too much power given to one person. I applied for an agency where the psychologist didn’t “think” military veterans were fit to be police officers so she failed EVERYONE with prior military experience.
There definitely has been some abuse of that. But there is a lot of data to support that certain personality traits and characteristics are not a good fit. A good example is someone who has already experienced significant trauma in their life. They can do the job perfectly fine but they are at much higher risk for developing disabling PTSD.
i just failed by test due to childhood trama. ugh im so annoyed that i failed because of that. i dont even know if i can reapply im in nc charlottee. any advise?
I failed 3 and every time i try to apply to a different agency they never call back after the background check so i believe it does. To expand upon my comment.....It is my understanding that usually tests are given to determine if someone is qualified for something. Are you qualified to graduate high school? Are you qualified to practice medicine? Can you safely land an airplane? Etc... As you were stating in your video, you said that the psychologists were looking for honest answers / responses. If someone is clued in to what answers the person (psychologist) giving the exam wants then they are going to possibly change their response thus making it a less than authentic response. If someone's first response is to manipulate or try to outsmart the test or test giver, that in my humble opinion would be a very honest insight.
@@mattbrewster726people are nervous taking these tests. The point of the video is to be honest and to alleviate some nervousness. Help qualified people achieve their goals. Somehow you see that as bad.
@@mattbrewster726 do you think it should go back to the old days when the only people who got the information on how the tests work were the families of officers? And do a little research, many large agencies make this information available to applicants in hiring seminars. This isn't top secret information. Police departments would rather candidates are as informed as possible. But since you know best, we can put you in charge of hiring at your local agency.
Patience... The written portion of the test is usually some form of the MMPI. The interview with the psychologist is to confirm any findings from the written and to see if your personality is suitable for law enforcement. They are looking to see if you are too aggressive or too passive, things like that.

I did not pass that. What can you recommend for the next time I take it. If I’m gunna be completely honest I was very nervous taking the test. It did come easy to me but I did try and memorize patterns on the test instead of answering each question individually.
BSIS need to come up with a better idea cause the exam for the psychological is a failure!!!!!!!
I just took mine and the psychologist didn't say much but what he did say was positive things. He mentioned things as to when my start date would be.. is this indicating I pass? Or was the psychologist using some sort of tactic
That is a good sign. Not a game.
Edgar ortiz you got the job congrats bro
What type of questions do they ask
Did you pass?

Hi Professor
Im all freaked out about my test. Just took it today. Four hours of tiresome questions, two exams. I cant help but feel like I failed. Wish I saw this before I went in .
Did you pass ?
Yes. It was the two weeks of waiting that really got me. The psych test should have been conducted first thing rather than the last thing. @@sosaa3436
Thank you!!!!
Thanks for your help mr walker im trying to Apply for CPD soon so need to prepare.
Good luck!
Did you get in ?
Very informative video and than you for your help
Should we answer strongly agree or disagree on answers ? If answering this way does this make me seem impulsive ?
Answer how you feel. If you try and outthink it, you will lose. They will detect deception because there will be inconsistencies. Just answer the question and move on
What if you had suicidal thoughts( not an attempt) in your military career can I still be a state trooper
Im struggling with that rn, I got disqualified due to this (I assume), so I'm appealing.
Great video! Can you tell me a bit about how an applicant who takes psychotropic medications for a mental health condition affects an applicant’s psych eval and their eligibility?
That would make the candidate ineligible.
So, no one in law enforcement takes medications for mental health? I find this hard to believe.
@@lauriem5196 Ok. Apply then and find out for yourself.
Thank you
I can't pass the psych stage to save my life. NYS Corrections DQ'd be twice, and the NYPD never contacted me after the interview. No letter, nothing.
@@greenyoshi48 Corrections informed me by mail both times. NYPD didn't contact me at all.
@@chris-dd6uq aren’t you supposed to receive an email telling you you don’t qualify? That’s wild, what’s the point of having an investigator in charge of your case ?
So what if you smoke weed in California can I still apply , Obviously not on duty but what if I were to smoke off duty ??
Very good question I have know idea of you can , I’m sure once they find a ounce of weed in your system you won’t be considered for hire which suck because I’m from Colorado we’re it legal and cops I know here smoke
You cant smoke at all if you're an officer for LA county. So drop the habit asap if you plan on being in law enforcement
Would this somewhat apply for a mental evaluation for the air force?
Yes, it would be a similar process. The written psych tests will help a psychologist determine your fitness for duty. Just do your best to answer the questions without overthinking it.
@@ProfessorWalker THANK YOU!! I'm going to meps again this Wednesday & I'm doing research to see what I should expect.

As far as the Air force goes, enlisting is simply an opportunity that will only arise once & itll set me up for LIFE, and IF I get killed In action... it beats choking on my own fluids in a hospice center.
I have my psychological test tomorrow. I hope I'm not disqualified due to me being a combat vetran with mild PTSD.
I wish you luck brother. It is hard to say what they will do. Send me an email at smokenlaw@gmail.com.

My stepson is OCD with depression, sleep disorder, suicide & intrusive thoughts plus obesity. I think he lie trying to get in. Will the police accept OCD candidates? He's currently obsessed about joining.
No, I can say with certainty he won't. The psychologist will figure that out. Does he have any medical records that indicate any of this? If so, automatically that will be disqualifying. You have to give them access to all medical records.
if you have anxiety can that be a disqualification?
Yes, and I would highly recommend that you not become a cop. Policing makes all of our mental health conditions worse. I have my own issues so I am not saying that to discourage you, but to give you reality.
@@ProfessorWalker okay thank you!
@@ProfessorWalker dude, there are plenty of cops on anxiety meds etc. Not all anxiety is equal and I believe it may help with empathizing with people in the long run.
@@returnfreedom once you are working yes. Pre-employment...no.
@@returnfreedom it would definitely help you empathize but there are significant liability issues in hiring someone with known psychological disorders. It doesn't matter what either of us think, the reality is you are not going to get hired on anxiety meds.
All the psychological evaluation tells me the people who pass are good at passing these types of screenings. I want to know what percent make it all the way to the psychological evaluation phase, but don't pass this part and why (specifics).

Why do so many sociopaths become cops ?
Why do so many sociopaths become doctors?
@@ProfessorWalker Aint that the truth.
Thank you, there are bad people in every profession.
@@ProfessorWalker Doctors are usually the worst people in society. They are power drunk sociopaths that think they are gods. Not all but certainly many.
@@menssuccessbible3806 That's exactly how I would describe cops. I heard a cop today saying that these tests are used to find overly aggressive and insensitive people because they think cops need to be this way to do the job...which is on it's face ridiculous. I took mines and my psychologist was nice I had a problem but she wrote everything down and gone renter them in the computer she said I how my family feel about me becoming a police and officer and she was saying I’m like this department, but I had some flaws about antisocial I explain it and she understood what I was trynna say , so her telling me ima love this department mean I pass?
Did you pass?? Hopefully so.
Hmm... Can someone pass this while dealing with depression?
Probably not. The reason would be that policing has a lot of psychological trauma involved with it and then you would be at higher risk for PTSD and other issues. If it is just a temporary depression then you might still be ok.
I just had my psych eval. The doctor was nice. I feel confident. Can I email you?

2:24 “I don’t THINK you would be a good fit for this career”. That is the problem with psych exams. Too much power given to one person.
I applied for an agency where the psychologist didn’t “think” military veterans were fit to be police officers so she failed EVERYONE with prior military experience.
There definitely has been some abuse of that. But there is a lot of data to support that certain personality traits and characteristics are not a good fit. A good example is someone who has already experienced significant trauma in their life. They can do the job perfectly fine but they are at much higher risk for developing disabling PTSD.
i just failed by test due to childhood trama. ugh im so annoyed that i failed because of that. i dont even know if i can reapply im in nc charlottee. any advise?

@@ProfessorWalker okay I emailed you
Thanks.
If I failed a psych test would that come up with another department that I apply to?
I failed 3 and every time i try to apply to a different agency they never call back after the background check so i believe it does. Also police departments run credit checks so they will see the last department that ran a credit check on you and they will call the department and ask why didn't they hire you thats when they will notify them that you did not pass the pych evaluation

Hey sir can I email you I have a question about the test

What if your bipolar and being honest would show them?
If you are diagnosed bipolar then you would be disqualified. They will have access to medical records so you can't hide that.
Professor Walker damn, that’s discrimination...because I see a psychiatrist and follow a treatment plan, I am in remission and stable. Would suck to be kicked out before being given a chance.
Professor Walker hey thanks for the reply!
@@sweetascandyxoxo it is because the stress of law enforcement would be bad for you. Depression, PTSD, alcoholism, and anger issues are all real consequences of a law enforcement career. You would be at very high risk.
I suffer from those things myself.
Professor Walker not anymore than the average person because I am medicated. I’m still going to try because I have a Human right to not be discriminated against when I have otherwise proved I am 1. Able to preform the job 2. Pass the psychological assessment with the diagnosis proven to be inapplicable, I even have a letter from my psychiatrist and years of documentation proving I am stable. Anyway I’ll let you know what happens. It’ll be a long time from now. Good luck to you and god bless.

I failed the polygraph but I told the truth. What gives.
The polygraph sucks. It gives false positives all the time. That is why it is inadmissible in court. The department may have an appeal process.
Just what we need......something to help people who don't need a badge get a badge. Sigh :-/
Did you watch it? From your comment I don't think you did.
@@mattbrewster726 and don't all those people you listed study and prepare for tests?
