Its amazing how Ennio managed to catch the feelings of space in this way. There's vast emptiness, loneliness, longing, but also hope and perhaps therefore also salvation.
Rest in piece my good man, and know that you've reached so many people with your art.

Spot on. His music to this film goes beyond the usual gamut of expression with film music - it's real humility. An alien film where the music leaves you feeling more human. And it's a fantastic movie, not well known enough.

Still one of his greatest composed tracks and I am stunned of how little it is known. Wish this was more mainstream

Moments of pure grandeur in this movie and of course, the soundtrack of Ennio Morricone has a huge part in it. Nearly all the movie soundtracks written by him that I know of bring tears to my eyes. Profoundly moving.

Heard he died and I thought to myself, where do I know that name from- and remembered he's sprinkled throughout my music library. This is perhaps my favorite track of his. I knew of him only by his music but I'm sure the quality of his life matched his work. Rest in peace.

I wasn't impressed with this film at its Stateside premiere. But, with each re-viewing of this film on Stateside television, I'm more impressed with Gary Sinise's performance and FAR more impressed by this film's musical score.

I know that this film has mixed reviews. However, for me, this film is in my top 5 film/series that got me into becoming a physicist. I really love it. Though, I'm a critical with evidence and a big skeptic, I also dream. Back then this film, gave that dream. :)

Sinise acts a dream. He's one of those actors you can put in a bad film and he's never bad in it. Morricone was the same as a composer and conductor, RIP, but you can take his music anywhere in life!

....apart from a not so well rendered CGI alien.....this movie is way better and more humane than plenty of others. it's the humanist version of 2001/ where the normally quite sardonic De Palma, suddenlly shows his emotive skill in filmmaking. I think most of the then critics were unexpectedly taken aback and ridiculed it. But for a surprising amount of people this movie became important and still keeps growing.

Of this entire album, this piece is perhaps the most wonderfully evocative - it is very much in the classical musical style 1890-1930, in terms of orchestration and choral music (well, apart from the electric guitar, which was nascent in the 1920's) - which coincides with the 'Mars Mania' period in history, where Percival Lowell was mapping the red planet from Mars Hill in Flagstaff Arizona, to the enthusiasm and fascination of the world. Opening that fascination was H.G. Well's 'War of the Worlds', Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Barsoom' novels. From this period and its enthusiasm for space and stars, allowed Robert Goddard to begin serious liquid-fuel rocket development - he always publically declared his goal was to reach the Moon, but in truth - his true goal was always Mars itself.

I needed a theme 4 my main character in my online cartoon "The Wolf Who Flew 2 Earth".
This astonishingly vast, lovely composition, which has always made me cry without fail every time I hear it due 2 it's incredibly eternal beauty, was chosen 4 him; it sounds just like him. 😊

Movies always compete on their own value within their release window. Their soundtracks often transcend. In this case, Ennio Morricone's music is better than the film it was constrained to. The movie is dated, and cheesy, yet the vibe remains. This is why I'm listening to the music in 2024.
