So far data miners have determined that completing main objectives decreases the cooldown timer between patrol spawns, and each player farther than 75 meters from another player adds another patrol spawn on the map, so you may actually be causing the endless hordes your team is forced to deal with lol.

@@MisterCynic18 thats funny do you have an explanation for why they die fighting the endless hordes before a single objective is completed? Do you have an explanation for the team choosing not to move and fight breach after breach in no man's land? Did the data miner determine why the team keeps spawning and dying trying to get their stuff instead of complete the mission? Man almost like there's multiple reasons for doing things. Also just because a patrol spawns does not mean you need to aggro them. Have the data miners determines why teammates constantly aggro every patrol instead of moving? You seem to have a lot of knowledge so please let me know more about what ths data miners did for you
Edit: did the data miners show you that you can despawn enemies by breaking line of sight? You fighting the endless horde is your own fault when all you have to do is not keep running in a straight line
Edit 2: did the data miners help you to determine why when im solo and get a breach on me the team still completes nothing and dies while i don't? Almost like the breach isnt as important since it can easily despawned if you....dont keep fighting the endless horde

@@MisterCynic18but you don’t have to kill everything on the map to win. You can try to tell them to push through, or fall back and avoid til you’re blue in the face. Then… you sit there and watch as they start shooting at a patrol that’s a mile away pulling the endless swarm on top of themselves.
Sometimes you need to walk away and when they die you can reinforce them away from the mess they made.

Anyone that wants to develop these skills should start with two goals you can develop together: learn how to solo entire missions, and learn how to stealth. Solo runs will teach you very quickly how to handle things solo. If you bring a supply pack and don’t allow yourself the normal resupply drop, that’s good practice for managing resources for this playstyle. Learning how to stealth your way around the map will teach you how enemies react to varying levels of violence, and how to hit and fade. Even if you don’t run full stealth, knowing how to engage without drawing the attention of everything around you is crucial, and will help you in any situation.
My normal group typically prefers to split in pairs. Instead of someone going full roam, we’ll split to hit minor POIs and reconnect at the next major objective. We’ll also route plan before we drop, and coordinate to make sure the equipment and strikes we all bring can cover everything. Its worth saying directly that this kind of teamwork requires everyone be on voice, everyone be flexible enough to adapt plans on the fly, and even put ego aside, own the mistake if its yours, forgive if it isn’t, and get on with getting things done.

The only real time it's been a horror story for me was with someone who we couldn't communicate with due to a language barrier. When they were near us, they blew us up. When they weren't they died in the middle of a nest and kept trying to go back for their equipment (not even samples).
That said, I have a tendency to do this sort of running off. I'm very objective-minded after playing solo, and so if I think the people I'm with can handle it (sometimes forgetting to ask) I will grab that SSSD and make a run for it while the drops are away from me. It's a bad habit, but I usually play with a friend that has trouble asking for help unless it's dire, so we kind of feed off each other's stubbornness and somehow get things occasionally done. They're a lot better at the game than me, but probably won't admit it, and some of that is probably from being left in those situations by me running off.

I’ve seen a few good and bad players in this role.
On suicide mission or above it always stresses me out. On the rare occasion that nothing goes wrong , I always have to respect the diver.
Some of these guys are insane and absolute legends.
One guy on diff 7 on durgen kept leaving the squad. We were having a hard time making up for the absence with a player who left the lobby. I did pick up his auto cannon, which helped, but every time we were pinned down I kept thinking “man I wish N3 was with us instead of whatever the hell he’s up to”.
But…by the time we were up for extraction I had seen him take out a medium base or two, and a side objective all on his own😮.
He even got our super samples.
The mission was done in 20 minutes and we had cleared the majority of the map.
I still don’t want him on my squad again😂.

I usually try to stay close enough to provide support in that case but I do get easily distracted by the shiney things everywhere so I do wander a bit too far away. I do try to be far enough away to provide a safe stop point in case the 2 or 3 others get wiped. I struggled in an extended firefight but have no trouble with hitting things before they see me so when I stick with the team I will use half our respawn tickets

They then find Super rock, a couple blue doors, and kill a medium outpost in self-defense. You then find the gunship factory the ACTUAL roamer was fighting, and take the opportunity to call in the hellbomb while the enemies are distracted and blow up the factory. You then find Roamer actual and help kill what few adds he hasn't rambo'd down to ensure if you die, he has the samples.
It's me. I'm the Scooby roamer.

I like this playstyle, and I had a game the other day go perfectly. Helldive terminids, easily took out guards and patrols and cleared a bunch of POIs. It was the oil extraction mission. Teammates were on the 2nd pump, and I was waiting at the transfer location. They were struggling, so I went and attracted a small patrol and got a breach called on me intentionally, which included 2 titans. Wiped it out, and the breach on me gave my team some breathing room. When they finished, I did the last main objective pretty easily, had some patrols including a bile titan stroll in, but didn't get a breach, so it still went smoothly. Had no issues making it to extraction either, think I had 20 smth samples including supers.
Loadout: Was using fire breaker for swarms, revolver for punching into mostly the commanders more easily, and quasar for chargers and titans. Shield bubble so a hunter smack of drip of bile doesn't stagger and slow me into death. Railcannon and I think I was testing gas strike at the time were my other stratagems.

What I can recommend is that you must have a way to help your team. On bots I dubbed it the scout sniper build, where as the others were taking fights I would dip back to them, flank and help out. Take a few headshots with an AMR, it's possible from a few hundred meters out. On bugs, well. It's a work in progress. You can peel off groups of enemies or helpfully throw an airstrike at them. Maybe crossmap EAT a charger.
Anyway, as the video says. If your team is under threat, look for ways to help. It's no good if you scoured the map for every last sample but you're the last alive halfway across the map from an extraction coming in 30s.
Speaking of samples. Circle back to your team, or extraction, or an upcoming main objective, and drop them. It's much simpler to keep them that way.
For storytime, the bad: We dropped under two detection towers, I got separated as I dipped to take out a base that was there. Couldn't make it back to my team, couldn't disengage. Had a 20 minute shootout where I did fuckall besides occassionally baiting the bot drop on myself and eating up supplies. Not very helpful.
A better story is one where I lived nearly the entire time, got most things done and relinked with my team at the extract. Then I saw that the other end of the map had a sample container and the guy goes "yeah I died next to the supers". I went fuck it and ran. Dodging and clearing bots to find a way through, and ran for it. Container was next to a PoI with a crate in it, somehow got that while under fire, grabbed the supers and by some miracle and an autocannon I found there, I made it back, only to die to a 380 someone called on the extract.

ngl, this is like, my natural way to play in this game. Especially against the bugs where I almost prefer to have most of the aggros because it makes managing a horde very easy once your used to reading one.
So when I finally started getting some of my regular gaming buddies into the game I had to unlearn this behaviour because I noticed they really needed the backup and me soloing everything was just not fun for them.
But now that they're getting to a point where they can handle themselves just fine I find myself just naturally slipping back into this role again.

I typically fill this role in squads that I join. Yesterday I joined a squad on suicide difficulty where I met another roamer, or as you stated someone who can't do Rambo things. They were the squad leader and for the first 10 minutes of the mission were dead set (pun intended) on being a roamer, so I stuck with the rest of the squad. They only stuck with this for 10 minutes though because as I reinforced them for the seventh time they rage quit. The squad proceeded to run into other difficulties and we ran out of reinforcements by the time it came to extract. We managed to hold out, reinforcing as the cooldown ran out and managed to extract with the full squad minus the guy who left and the super samples, however the majority of the other samples were lost.

A word of warning: In this role it is very easy to get sidetracked into another side objective you aren't ready for. For example, I briefly left my team to go and snipe an Illegal Broadcast from across the map, as I was lining up the EAT shot I get launched from a Stalker that I had Aggroed, so I had to take care of the nest before I could take out the tower. Sometimes side objectives can be close together, so when you're dealing with one always bare in mind that you could also have to deal with a second - all on your own. Unless you run away and come back with the team, this is a team game after all.

This is my play style to a T. One piece of advice I can give is KNOW WHEN TO RETREAT. Sometimes being the most affective is not engaging. Being a roamer is a thankless job. I always hear the griping when I’m out and about but at the end of the match when they see 0-1 deaths, samples and a healthy kill count they usually have nothing to say. Also like he said find a load out that you like that’s effective for handling almost every situation. Only engage when you have to. Also don’t be unwilling to let some samples or a place of interest go if your teammates need back up. Great video bud. If I didn’t know it was about Helldivers I’d think this was a life seminar from an ex marine.

A tip that I've learned over my play time is to drop samples off at evac when you get the chance (passing by it). Depending on what system you use the keybind/button may be different from the default "X" key. Dropping samples off at evac secures them in an easy to reach spot if you die, and they don't despawn. "Stacking" sample containers at evac by repeatedly picking them up and then dropping them to add your samples to the "stack" makes sure that they all get out during the end of the mission. And if your teammates don't understand, at least it's one less body to go grab loot from.

I love to roam as it keeps the ADHD-part of my brain entertained. I also love getting better and being able to solo-disable the nests and fabricators; I do, however, get myself killed, either due to hubris or due to biting more than I can chew... A common theme is playing after work when I'm tired and then forgetting things like reloading one of my weapons after a fight and then finding that I could've really used a loaded weapon. Most often though, I just happen to have a patrol be passing through the moment I start making some noise, even though I checked the map and my surroundings and nothing was there 10 seconds prior.
... but yeah, definitely have a lot more XP and competence to grind before I can roam professionally.
    Horror Stories, you get 2:
    1. I died 260m away from the extraction point due to a bile titan corpse that launched me into the upper stratosphere and the squad leader came with me to help get my samples and we both died due to a sudden enemy patrol with another bile titan magically showing up at the worst possible time; so I died again and I also got my buddy killed.
    2. I got killed by a mean squadmate who was upset I was doing solowork, they got my samples and then proceeded to die and have their corpse be launched outside of the map so the samples were just lost (this was my first diff 7 game so I was looking forward to getting some Super Uranium).

I actually took to a sort of combination of this role and the Guardian recently when we were finishing off the bots, a new hybrid role I'll call the Overwatch. I ran the Sickle, Redeemer or Senator depending on how I felt, and either High Ex or Stun nades. For Stratagems, I took the AMR (my beloved (when against bots at least)), Supply Pack, and Eagle Airstrike (kept getting sucked into -1 Stratagem Slot modifiers, but my 4th would have probably been EATs, 500kg, or EMS Mortar possibly). I pretty much always run either the Trailblazer light set (Scout passive is my favorite) or the Eradicator light set (Fortified is also really good).
I mostly hung back from the group until we got to objectives, then picked off MG nests and any Devastators or Hulks that were in view before closing in with the Sickle to help clear outposts. But the Roamer part of it came in when I'd notice patrols or drops coming in on the flanks, enemy artillery was shelling the team on OBJ, or I could just generally do something else within about 150m that helped the team more than a fourth gun in the fight if they had things under control. In those situations I'd peel off and function as a sort of satellite element, keeping eyes and ears open in case the team needed me to regroup but otherwise tackling other things on the side autonomously. If we were attacking a jammer and someone went down, I'd be the one to pull back and get them back in the fight, also giving me a moment to assess the situation from further back and maybe get some safer shots in with the AMR on some rocket Troopers/Devastators, flanking Striders, or just a pesky MG nest that was suppressing my teammates.
It was very go-with-the-flow, off-the-cuff style decision making and playing, but it worked out beautifully, even taking that mindset into quickplay with randoms. Probably the best moment of it was once as we were extracting, Pelican-1 just touched down, two of the team got in, and the other guy was getting chased by a Hulk, barely alive and out of stims. I put two rounds in the Hulk's face and dropped it, narrowly saving my teammate and giving him a chance to book it for the ship. Immediately after, I got barrelled down by a Hulk from behind - and towards a second Hulk coming in from my right. Barely managed to stim before I got swatted again, this time to the other side of the ship. Popped my second and final stim just as a Berzerker swung on me, and managed to make it in the ship with only 2 seconds left. And that same mission, I held off three dropships worth of reinforcements and several pateols with just my AMR as the rest of the team cleared the heavy outpost, keeping two Hulks, about eight Striders, and I dont even know how many rocket Troopers and assorted Devastators off of my team and focused on me, all snug and tucked into some rocks just 50m outside the outpost walls. Easily the most fun dive I've had to date.
For bugs, I still haven't found the best loadout for me to fill a similar role, mostly because I can't utilize distance as much as I could against bots. Quasar Cannon is pretty nice but the cooldown between shots makes it a little less useful for the roaming aspect, because the second there's more than one heavy target, you kind of just need to break contact for about ten seconds to recharge. That's the only real downside though, to be honest. I'm sure EATs could supplement it plenty fine, but that leaves me with just one more stratagem given I run Supply Pack almost 100% of the time, and I'm not willing to give up that supreme utility between the self-sustainability and team support it offers. I'll figure it out eventually though.
Can't wait to see more of these videos; I love thinking about team comp and roles from a more "specialized" and logistical point of view like this, adapting the team to be able to fit different missions against the different factions.

A couple of tips for anyone interested.
Some of this might seem obvious but, I like to write down just in case.
Having the right equipment is very important for what you are wanting to do on your ninja runs.
That being said, I highly recommend using scout armor.
Gathering intel of enemy positions is very important. It is also important to check up on your team and if any threats are headed their way. 3 divers in a group make a lot of noise so patrols will be drawn to their location.
Still on the subject of information. I also recommend turning off music. Yes victory horns are glorious but when you are circling a POI or objective, listen for what units are there. The map can be useful with dots but sometimes dots will overlap and give you a full idea of how many units are there. So listen up!
Keep a ear out for chatty bots on guard or patrols singing in unison.
    More tips:
Taking out large bases does take some planning to do.
It is a good idea to use hit n run tactics as well as use a mortar stratagem as a decoy if they suspect you.
Hit n run tip: with bots. Kill the small units before they can call for a dropship.
If you mess up and not kill all of the small units in time. Its okay to run and come back later. Those units that was called in will either go on patrol or despawn. Most cases they despawn after a certain time.
One last tip unless you want more:
Get into the habit of checking your map for dots. It is important you know your enemies postions and where they are going.
You are stealthy. Part of that means not being snuck up on.
    Good luck!

Even while far away, you are still part of the team. Announcing that you are going Rambo and on what target is sort of a must if you don't want your teammates to be confused. When playing with my friends, it became our go-to strategy that they pack heavy and medium armor so they can go toe to toe with the foes while I blitz around in light armor, picking on objectives and sideobjectives.
Unfortunately (or Fortunately) I have no horror stories cause I am the Roamer among my friends and I always strive to keep up the dynamic. When they need help or I feel I cannot handle something on my own, I immediately rotate back to them to help. I would hate to piss them off so I always took it easy on my attempts until I was confident enough. But seriously, this can lead to some awsome situations. Against the Automatons, we were running low on time so I broke away to deal with the objectives while they were raising hell nearby. It was almost cinematic as I sneaked into a base to activate the terminal while they were dealing with a Stratagem Jammer nearby cause it was preventing me from calling down the SSSD. We could deal with two objectives at the same time for the price of one.

I usually stick with at least one teammate. But no matter what, if I’m with a crew, I only run off if I’m surrounded and cant handle it, so I’ll pull as many enemies away from the rest of the team as possible, get them strung out to the point I can pick them off, then make my way back. Even then, I stay within a few hundred meters.
Yesterday, we had 3 bike titans and 4 chargers all at once. I couldn’t get a moment to reload my auto cannon. So I hit them all with some breaker shots to aggro them on me, then started running and dodging. Eventually got them far enough from the rest of the team that they could keep working, and once we were far enough to not have them reaggro on the team, I was near extraction. So I dropped an eagle and gas strike and let them catch me right where both were going to hit. When we got back to extraction, only one titan was left. It was amazing

You'll get your good days and bad days in this role, but if there's one thing I highly recommend taking, it's the supply pack. That will save you more than the autocannon or shield bubble or any other as it will keep the flow of stims and nades that you'll need for this role. A lot of the time, you'll not find what you're looking for in the field and if you get in a jam, you're not going to have the resources to manage the issue. Supply pack will give you what you need

I am the Roamer, and I am always the Roamer. I play the roamer in two ways, either I talk everyone into coming with me, or I don’t and leave anyway. Typically I play with one of my friends, so if I need help (to, say, blow a jammer up because I’m running stuns), I just holler him over and we keep moving. I also roam in the sense that I will ditch my team because they got into a massive unnecessary firefight and complete at least half of the main objective by the time they’re done. I’m fast, ADHD, and extremely stealth focused, which I think is a perfect combo for this position. I get to where I’m going fast, always know what I’m getting into, and avoid situations where dying 300m from everyone else is likely. My stealth focus also helps me support my squad from wherever I might be, sniping or flanking as needed. Oh, and some advice for any other Roamers, take small engagements and stay stealthy. Kill any isolated enemies you can, and then blitz the rest before they can react. When you do have to reveal yourself, do it in one of two ways. Drop an Eagle if the ball won’t be noticed for a bunch of kills, or locate every trooper and commissar and ensure that you can kill every single one before they can fire a flare. If there aren’t many, you can afford to take a heavier unit out of the equation first, as long as you quickly follow up on the little guys. You are one person, stack the odds in any way you can. If you don’t need to be in an area anymore, just leave, preferably with a smoke strike going off right behind you. Side objectives are typically harder to take than main ones, as they tend to be more heavily and densely guarded. Side objectives usually have a random assortment of small and medium units, with nobody left unattended, while main objectives have a surprisingly consistent set of guards that can be chipped away at sneakily. Also, do NOT run either guard dog, as counterintuitive as it may seem. Having a little buddy helping out in fights is great until you realize that they are trigger happy maniacs that will blow your cover any chance they get. Also all of my advice is for bots, if you’re fighting bugs you can be much more aggressive. The #1 thing for bots and bugs, though, is spatial awareness. Know what’s around you, and know where you need to be, because nobody is there to watch your back.

Great video, it really resomates with me since ive been playing this style more and more in the past month.
Id also suggest more stealth. At almos the end of the vid you were running in a medium/heavy outpost guns blazing and barely keeping alive. A better option would be to just take out the factories with stratagemd imo.
    My loadout consists of:
    - Orbital laser (heavy duty like heavy outposts or 2+ hulks i cant dodge)
    - Anti material rifle (trustworthy killer of all things clanking)
    - Orbital shotgun thingie (idk its name)(amazing swarm dealer as im not fan of clusterbombs)
    - Eagle airstrike (small factories i cant be bothered with)
I just usr the scout armor with an smg or shotgun go deal with swarms if needed. But i mainly played bots, have yet to play my 5th bug mission lel

Now essentially after fully watching the video here's my two cents, ever since helldivers 2 came out and i discovered that we no longer share a top down camera, and no longer have to spam voice commands to fight for the camera, I've contributed myself to the role of a roamer, often times doin gthe things that are out of reach for my teammates, or flanking when my teammates need it. when done successfully when you hear about it and think about it it sounds pretty bad ass right? well let me tell you this role has little to no glory, everyone is too focused from staying alive, or completing an objective while covering their squadmates' back to even notice that you helped them take out a bile titan that was heading towards them. And just because you're roaming solo it doesn't mean you should cut comms. when you drop your samples at extract, let 'em know, most times roamers get a bad rep because teammates are often in the dark, and you just went off somewhere without letting them know like that ex who ghosted you and left you on read.
This role if anything promotes more awareness then people might think, its the ability to make a decision to fill what your team lacks, what is out of their reach, do they even want samples? roaming, is not the same as solo play, you're not roaming on your own to be self-sufficient. you roam on your own because you know how to best help your team, and sure this may sound counter-intuitive espescially with how patrol works, but often more times, when you're the only roamer its barely noticeable. You roam, because your teammate needs you to roam.
Make callouts, tell 'em you're going for the mortar emplacement, tell 'em that you can do objective A while they do objective B, cus no matter how far you roam, they're still your squad mates.

Alright since you asked. I basically play only with a few friends or Solo so I "Kevin" was me learning the ropes the hard and bad way. And laughing because it felt appropriate to die and fail sometime in this game.
I mostly played with a group of friend that preferred to stick to the bugs and to difficulty 3, so when I played with a different friend who dragged me into a level 6 automaton mission with two randos I was in for a bit of a culture choc already and I decided to experiment with stealth, since I'm already off the deep end, might as well try something different completely. I quickly realized that I didnt have it to push solo so I stuck to your step 1, sticking with the team but breaking off to try and backstab/loot but not straying too much. At one point tho, we got boxed in on a small beach surrounded by cliffs with bots covering our two choke-points out and no reinforcements left. After a few hellish minutes my friend snuck away while everyone else was dead and they managed to respawn me before dying. I brought back the other two but instead of sticking with them I decided the time left in the mission was low and decided to break away again and ignore them dying while I completed the mission. I was successful in that endeavour for the most part thankfully. At least until a teammate brought over a bunch of hulks and devastator right where I tried to hide while the loading bar on our drill filled up, blocking the way to the objective. Looking back maybe my decision wasnt the best but on the other hand it almost payed off. The rush of managing to solo pretty much all 3 main objectives did embolden me while the failures helped temper me and got me paradoxically more cautious. I started breaking out more and more but dying less and less, taking less risks and pulling back more. I'm sitll learning and usually sticking to step 1 with little expeditions on my own further and further and I'm enjoying the process. I'm not sure I'll have the same thrill vs the bugs (or the illuminate) as I had the bots but I enjoyed learning and progressing.

In a Blitz mission I was doing with randoms (Level 3, the host, Level 17 and Level 46) on Suicidal, I think we had somebody trying to be a 'roamer', who was trying to get the other bases done despite the main objective being finished.
The Level 17 roamer was constantly eating it to heavy units, and had equipped light-armor crowd clearing stratagems, a machine gun, and a jetpack. He kept eating up the lives, and eventually we had to extract with 3 minutes left on the clock/having only 3 lives left, because he died around 5 - 7 times in such short succession.
Me and the other high player tried to get the new guy out, and we head to extract. The Level 17 wasn't very happy over the 3 - 1 decision in wanting to leave, and decided to just kill all of us as soon as the dropship landed. :P

    I got a story.
I was the last man on planet Ubenea, which was at the time 99.9998% liberated. I could not call for reinforcements and the SOS broadcast was deployed in vane. I was alone, an "impossible" mission.
On the crimson planet my task was to launch an icbm. This would require of me to use every second available of the destroyer's low orbit capabilities to be utilized diligently. I was tremendously outnumbered, outgunned and unfortunately outmatched.
First the generator. Disposing of the occasional clanking band of scrap heaps.
Second, the launch codes, not much to say. The patrols were getting more intense but I would try avoiding unnecessary combat. I grabbed the codes and kept moving.
Next were the pumps but it was at this point that everything fell apart. I was followed by a patrol and my stratagems were on cool down. After 35 minutes of crawling through mud, getting shot and blown to smithereens just to die from a terminal trying to play tetris with me, GAMBLING my chances off a literal cliff where the literal last stand took place.
Unfortunately because of my failure we had to defend Ubanea from an emergency response task force invasion.

It's not about samples, it's about time.
Roamers can hoof it in scout armor, cover more ground with less fighting, and avoid the number #1 cause of death, people throwing strategems behind you to kill 2 bugs.
It gives you the ability to wipe out objectives, points, and patrols without summoning breeches or drop ships.
Roamer is why the gane is better in 2 groups of 2, 4 manning is just for wasting time and drinking with buddies.
Roamers can also pull patrols away from objectives, and requires knowing how to break contact.
A roamer has to know how to deal with bile titans, but chargers are a roamer's friend. They help you destroy objectives, other enemies and self stun so you can hide and redirect their pathing.
Sounds like explosions and shotguns will draw in patrols to investigate.
If you break contact amd throw a gernade in another direction, you can get them cjasing wild geese.

Generally, I don't usually have problems with breaches; few people know that you can close those gaps with an orbital strike, which complements well the cooldown of each breach and the orbital strike. And if you don't use the toxic gas to eliminate the small bugs that come out and thus leave only the larger ones already weakened, to be honest, after weeks of fighting against Automatons, the bugs are a joke even on Helldive, and now with the quasar cannon, it feels like you are the hunter and they are the prey.

Edit: I think communication can also help in this scenario. Ideally your team should drop what they are doing to take care of the artillery before doing any other objective. I have ran past whole objectives just to remove artillery

I will say, the question of your team being pinned on an objective depends on the layout of the stratagem jammer spawn. Presumably you have LOS on jammer, so you can see if it can be destroyed with one eat rocket or not (depending on if it has a conjoined fab). Having a conjoined fab would mean I'd just shoot out the jammer first, as that would free my entire team's ability to use stratagems which can absolutely be a fight turner. As you said though, it requires situational awareness.

I have found that enemies will run past me to target my allies when I wear light armor. Combine this with enemy reinforcements moving towards the sound of combat and you can easily get situations where the solo player is having a relatively easy time of it while the rest of the team struggles.
This can lead to a lot of animosity as the solo player is actually making it harder for the team by increasing spawn rates and not helping teammates in trouble.
This can be made worse by the solo player looking down on their allies for not disengaging and assuming its just a skill issue.
It can be pretty easy to disengage when the rest of your team is engaged. Light armor makes it a lot easier.
But getting 3 people to disengage at the same time is harder. Add noncommunicative randoms, trigger happy patrol triggerers or heavy armor and its really easy for a team to get bogged down.
As a roamer, its your job to remember that and not be an asshole when leaving the group.
Yes, your team may have skill issues, but you are taking advantage of the amount of enemies hitting them even if you do not realize it.
Knowing when and how to support is critical. Just telling them to disengage, leave the support weapons they were trying to get back and outrun the enemies is not helping them.
That works for you because you know how to do it, and often because you are wearing lighter armor.
Knowing how and when to disengage is not easy. Dismissing this as a “skill issue” just makes you a part of the problem- you become part of the skill issue.
Players may have the skill to engage the enemy on the chosen difficulty in a 4 man team. Many of them will be slightly or moderately over their head. Take away the 4th player and you may be artificially increasing the difficulty beyond what they were ready for or capable of.
I’ve been in matches where the random struggled with disengaging and the other half of the team left us to do objectives. For them it was a relatively easy mission since we got most of the bug breaches. For us, it was a tough slog of a battle where we held the majority of the forces off their backs as we slowly moved across the map.
I could have abandoned the random and snuck away. Hell, I did slip away a couple times. But I came back to help them survive when I realized they did not or could not get away. And they saved my butt about as much as I saved theirs.
And you know what? That was a helluva fun match. But it was lessened a bit by the obnoxiousness of the teammate telling us we had skill issues at the end.
The moral of the story is check in on your team. If they arent having a good time, consider giving them a hand, and whatever you do, don’t be a jerk on coms. People are not required to hit your skill level before playing the game.

Yeah, I’m definitely a loot Goblin. Many a few times I’ve done it cause I don’t sync well with the team and get killed more often by friendly fire.
I’ve had some great runs but I will say it sucks grabbing all you can and then loosing all at the farthest locations

When I play with randoms, I typically break away from the group to go clear outposts/nests and objectives that are on the way of the objective that my team chooses to ignore (not too far from my team and I can always ask for assistance when needed).
My success rate is about 40/60 on difficulty 7 as I normally take a stealthy approach and get absolutely boned when a breach or drop happens.

Especially on bug planets I'm that solo guy. I have an autocannon that can decimate everything in the automaton line up and if my team is struggling with gunships i can snipe them across a vast distance. I work on time constraints and unfortunately some groups just play way too slowly for me to get anywhere in a grinding sense

A note for those that die while going roaming: deaths contribute to patrol frequency. Dying literally makes the mission harder, so learning how not to do that is important.

This is Admirable Admiral InSerjent broadcasting from SES Sovereign of Justice, and I approve of this message. As a Roamer main in Helldive difficulty during the excursion in the Creek and the entirety of Operation Swift Disassembly, the role is surely not for every one but it's really satisfying to solo 4/5 or 5/5 objectives. There are even times I'm the only one doing them. It's the role for the unsung heroes who just like to operate behind the curtains.

Roaming with a jetpack in bug missions is awesome. The loadout needs to be good vs hunters jumping at you, even when you aren't wearing an energy shield. So your primary or support weapon should be excellent at that job specifically.
I'm definitely one of the people who just died to overwhelming enemies, then looked at the map, and groaned in agony seeing that my team isn't focused on covering my behind. Well, that's a bad attitude. The mission can be completed in many ways, and I have no authority to demand it's my way. It should be your first step in any decision making to stop and assess the situation. Not "So I started blasting and expected my team to get involved".

I never go into a round planning to roam or go solo but i will do so under certian circumstances. Like excessive friendly fire.
An axample happened yesterday fighting the bugs. I was perched atop a rock shooting down at a bug breach with a grenade launcher farming kills while the rest of the squad was in close proximity. Suddenly i sustained the combined total foorce of a 500kg, an aristrike and a cluster bomb all at once. My team called in a broken arrow- all air strikes available directly on my head for a situation I had under control solo.
For the rest of that particular round I ran solo figuring the bugs were less of a threat than my own team lol they fought an endless wave while i hit the main and sub objectives. I never linked back up with them until the pelican was on the ground and of course I almost got killed again at extract.
I will also split off for priority targets. Stalker nests, shreiker nests etc. I refuse to go after any other objective or resource while such dangerous enemies harrass the team.

Against bots, I prefer to be the roamer or stealth sniper/flanker roles but against bugs I prefer to stick with the team or go duos. The problem I've run into in those roles against bots is the rest of the team dying all over the place or someone trying to come with me but failing to keep up and me having to babysit them. In the past week, one match I've completed an entire half of the map by myself while the rest of the team got us to less than 5 reinforcements when I had zero deaths the entire match and in another match someone was trying to come with me but was unable to take care of himself so I ended up having to constantly reinforce him. I've come to notice that a lot of people just don't know when to retreat and so they decided to stubbornly bunker down while losing the war of attrition instead of attempting to retreat, regroup, and reposition. I sometimes have to literally throw (reinforce) the team away from the battle while retreating towards extraction to get them to understand that the battle isn't worth the 10 reinforcements they've taken up so far.

I have a story but this is more so my own story rather then a story of someone else. While I was playing with some randos I went completely rogue and ended up doing two of the mission objectives for the ICB mission on helldive. I was trying to lessen the amount of preassure on my team by getting swarms to focus on me and the strategy ended up working. However they ended up calling for Extract and I died surrounded by a wave with a few bile titans so no chance in getting the samples back
