    I will say when it comes to relics, Yoshi P has a good point about the fact there’s a lot of jobs now. I think there needs to be a balance on how much grind something like relics are because if they’re not planning to stop adding jobs anytime soon, it’s going to get more and more time consuming to max them out- especially for new players starting from square one. I hope they figure out a satisfying middle ground.

    • @OldManInternet
      @OldManInternet 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      I think an easy way to solve this would be to have the first relic be a grind, and then have subsequent relics skip steps to make it easier. This way you still get the feeling of accomplishment, but can also make them easier on alt jobs.

      Yeah Balance is the main thing they need now. Ease of use and tomestones should be a part of it, but *just* a 4-part tomestone grind was overly simplistic and redundant (We already have Tomestone weapons, tome grinds already existed)
      Just having multiple options for the next relic would be nice. Let me work for it, but don't make it an overly complicated grind. There can be a good balance.

    There's such a world of difference for me between removing points of friction or improving clarity/readability vs increasing difficulty. Adding AOE markers and tank buster indicators instead of forcing players to read and memorize ability names in the cast bar is not dumbing down content or making it easier; it's removing points of friction. Higher level content should be puzzles that need to be solved over time, but lower level content like story dungeons, players should be able to clear on their first run by sight-reading the mechanics and executing them competently.

    • @Gloriankithsanus

      I would love final to be more mechanically difficult and less puzzle-game-difficult. Neither the mechanics, nor your rotation are difficult themselves.
      Juggling your rotation while playing a game of memory is the difficulty of the game, which I learned to dislike in P12S.

    I really like the way they did Shadowbringers relics. You could do it using Bozja like what feels intended but the majority of the steps had one or two alternate paths to take. My big problem with Endwalker relics was that it wasn't encouraging me to do things I wasn't already doing on my daily roulette grind. I still occasionally go back and grind out some of the older relics because it's something slightly different.

    The comments about figuring it out as they go remind me of Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan has openly talked about how much they figured out as they went, or how they planted seeds early that they had no idea what the payoff would actually be at the time. The notion that a long-running story has to be thought out entirely from the start for it to be good is a misconception.

      At the same time writing is really about discovering the story as you go and being able to go in unexpected directions. My hope is they just allow themselves to take those risks, and they already have shown to an extent they will.

      70% of the SHB relics were done outside of StQ. Pretty much everything except DR's timeworn artifacts. Granted, especially before the drop rate was increased from 1 to 3, that one step takes a very long time. In my experience each Resistance weapon had most of their parts be acquired passively and outside of StQ. Besides HW fate farm for RBY, timeworn artifacts, and raw emotions, as well as the one time step. Most of it was done outside, usually with blue if you got the chance. The RBY memories, green ones (also roulettes get them), loathsome memories with modern drop rates are quickest in CLL but CT Alliance raids are still very effective at giving them. I got a few weapons passively just from roulettes with the quest up. The one time step where you have to either do a bunch of Zadnor and or Omega/Eden is the most grindy part. Also somewhat BLU friendly, although these days I never see PFs for them. The HW and STB raids can also be skipped for fate grind, made easier with blue. The final step requires Zadnor to be fully complete anyways so all the grind in zones 1-3 both level you up and give you relic parts which to me alleviates the grind.

      Yeah. Dawntrail is a transition period for FF14. Many games and media do this when changing drastically in story. Some of the most notable examples would be the first season of a new show, which tends to start slow. Or in Walking Dead after they leave the Jail which completely changed everything. RWBY is a good example with Season 4 after the fall of the school and everyone being scattered. And another example, which people aren't going to like is WoW with DF and TWW. It is very common in media for there to be a slow down period when things are about to change drastically.

    Honestly, I’m worried about what will happen if player feedback determines too much of the narrative of this next arc. At least in the English-speaking side of the fanbase (which is the only part I’ve personally experienced) it seems like the most vocal fans only react positively to the heaviest and most high-stakes parts of the story, like Shadowbringers and Endwalker, and can’t stomach anything lighthearted and less serious. If the story becomes one universe-shattering crisis after another, as many people seem to want it to be, it’ll become flat and boring.

It's awesome getting to see the public interact with your creation for the first time, and is absolutely invaluable as a developer to see how actual people interact with things. Ofc they do these tests with their own game testers as well, but I bet getting to see how people of different cultures react must be especially fascinating, and they only get to see first time reactions like that once per expansion.
    It'd also be why you can always see Yoshi-P looking at live chat to gauge player reactions to announcements, trailers, etc during PLLs.

    • @iceman3317
      @iceman3317 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There is a huge difference yes, but there are people who prefer the grind. In most cases in WoW people make themselves grind when they don't have to. Ever since Legion, there is always a catch up system. People should know that by now, but yet people still act like they have to get everything done within a few weeks. It is just like right now with MoP Remix. And a more FF14 example, Island Sanctuary when people were hitting lv cap within a week. I did grind it a bit, but not that hard. I do believe catch up mechanics need to be added.... not to the existent of WoW, but there is a lot of things that need to be worked on with FF14. Let's face it, there are a lot of people who play multiple characters and don't want to go through the entire story again. And then new players have a long long slog through ARR to EW which they may not care about and I think pushes a lot of people away. If we hit lv 50 before we finish ARR, we should have the option to skip to the next expansion. If we hit 80 before we finish ShB we should be able to skip to EW. Or at the very very least, allow the skipping of Post Patch stuff.

      Complete bullshit. Anything that isn't MSQ in this game is grindy as fuck. From leveling, to fate farming, to fishing, to looting raids. I don't get the impression that "grinding until they fall over" is NOT the goal.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Gloriankithsanus Those are *optional* grinds, though. If all you want to do is get reasonably good gear, all you gotta do is 4-5 expert roulettes per week and buy gear with tomestones, and then find some way of getting 500k or so gil (the experts give you 12k gil per run, btw) to buy the current weapon. There you go, you're geared up. Any optional content you _choose_ to do, well. That's optional, and done for fun. When you do content because you _choose_ to do it for fun, you don't care that it's grindy.
      Alliance Raids also give tokens to upgrade tomestone gear, but those are guaranteed and set quantities that you receive per run. The pieces that drop in Alliance Raids tends to be glamour gear, and again, that's considered "optional content". They can also be used as filler until you get the tomestone piece for that slot.
      In WoW, what do you do to get raid gear? Do raids. With the Personal No Loot system, you could kill 50 bosses and not see a single piece of gear you need.

Where it starts off, "system message, you about to start content that is going to require long time to complete, make sure you set aside enough time." And then cannot accept any new quests.

      I feel like the best thing is Eureka's weapon flow because it is fairly easy and doesn't require a bunch of random World Quests in other places. And then as you do more, you get like a discount on required materials. So if you need 10 of an item, they a feather from an Island Boss like Eureka had, You would need 10 for like the first 3, and then it goes down to 7. Then 5.... and finally 3 as you do more and more. I personally don't like the raids. I prefer the massive groups on a single world boss like creature like Eureka had. because even now the Bozja raids suffer from lack of interest. If there is going to be a raid, put it at the very end like Eureka.

      @@sfnurh That would require the team balancing 14 levels of quest difficulty... And if the first one was sufficiently hard enough then it would make sense 'cause it would still mean that to have the privilege to unlock ANY of them you still had to work for it. And I'm not saying just toss over 650 poetics and that's it, more like, have the first relic be as difficult as the ARR grind (but different and maybe less annoying) then have subsequent relics be more similar to the EW pseudo- grind that doesn't take an entire patch cycle

    The EW relic process, I get it, they wanted to make it more manageable especially with the amount of jobs that the game has, but the fact that other than grinding out the Manderville questline if you had skipped it from the start, took out the fun and achievement of it.

    11:20 the best way to go about it would be as simple as making the grind easier after a while (after the next expansion comes out for example)
    If the idea is to keep people busy between patches, then no one would complain about them being easier to get once you get busy in a new expansion.
    And for those who DONT want to grind and still get the weapons for all jobs then just wait till it get easier later (obviously that would be only for glamour) but at least so far it hasn't been impossible for casuals to at least get ONE for their main job.

Endwalker was the culmination of a massive plot arc, and DawnTrail will be setting up all the threads that future expansions will follow up on. It is interesting to hear that they finally connected all of the Ascian story "dots" in Shadowbringers, because of all of the expansions to me that was extremely great also due to lore, where we learned so much more about Ascians and they went from "fellas in the back doing bad stuff" to something completely different. Still "evil" in that sense but there appeared purpose behind it, reason. Made me respect them more. Still was going to stop them but at least I understood why.
    And I liked how they did relic weapons in Endwalker. To me the story itself is more important, things and choices you do during it to perhaps form the weapon. Finishing it with tomestones is fine. Brain-numbing grind, doing some instance over and over again just to get multiple copies of same drop, farming fates and what not - that kills any and all fun. Grinding. Sucks. There's no achievement in it, no accomplishment other then "I had more free time per day then you did, so I this grind took me less time then for you". And it wasn't "less work" or "shorter journey" in Endwalker, you literally had to do the WHOLE Manderville quest line to get to the point of getting that relic weapon. Sure, to a 10 year player this is shorter journey in the end, but to a recent player this is a whole long quest line with instances and all to accomplish. That's quite a journey.

    One more thing about "ranking" systems that are based on accrued value like Ishgard restoration: it pretty much means that if you don't step in at the start and dedicate most of your time to it, you'll never make it, and for any one with a smudge of competitiveness in their bones, that is peak disincentivizing. It happened to me as a player back then - coming in late, lots to learn, will never win, so what's the point, and left. To this day I still avoid doing Firmament content as a result; it just grossed me out forever. I hope Cosmic Exploration, if it has a ranking, is not based on total accrued contribution over time, but more like the FATEs system where if you have X impact you have Gold, and Y impact gives Silver, etc.

    I wouldnt mind if they just made the FIRST relic need the extra steps that makes it more of an accomplishment like the books of the SHB relics, but the giant grind for all relics afterwards was such a pain i gave up halfway with lots of them, so i wouldnt mind subsequent relics just needing tomestones, its more of a middle ground also relic maps are good because they also offer other avenues of making gil content and collectibles like eureka and bozja

    The Bozja system was probably the most balanced, it was entangled in the expansion end content, it was a grind but not as absurd as the earlier expansions and it took up the idea of 1st relic hard, later relics easier. I think they need to continue on that path, you can have 15 quests with grinds to get your first relic but 10 of those quests are "first time only" and condense down to 5 quests (or whatever) for the remaining relics.

Island Sanctuary did sound way cooler than it actually was so I'm skeptical about CR. But I'm still looking forward to it, I'm curious what they're planning with it.
    And I really hope we get another Bozja area after MSQ. I really liked the setting.
    And about the relics... I'm shuffling 4 to 5 classes thru MSQ simultaneously so yes, I appreciate easy relic grinds 🙈 but I wouldn't mind grinding my pretty 🍑 off for at least one relic to show off. I hope they'll find a nice middle ground on that topic

    About Cosmic Exploration: there's a difference between addictive gameplay and toxically competitive gameplay.
    The problem with Ishgardian Restoration is that you know there is someone out there who is going to spend nearly every waking moment on it, so someone who wants to compete feels that they have to go at least to that level of commitment to compete.

    With regard to the relics I think another reason it feels like cutting corners is that for several expansions in a row, the relic content came later and later, and those of us who like doing relic content noticed. In Heavensward, there was a relic weapon quest available from the beginning, just like in ARR. In Stormblood, we didn't get Eureka until patch 4.25, which would've been ~7 months after release. Bozja came out in patch 5.35, meaning we went half the expansion without relics. Continue that pattern into Endwalker and we might have gotten an Eureka/Bozja equivalent at 6.45, at which point the expansion was nearly over and what's the point of including relics at all? So, from our perspective, no relic zone but the new relic quest comes out in 6.25 means "obviously" they cut out the detailed questline/grind zone element so they could release it faster. And that still feels too late to me. I really want relics to be available from the beginning again.
    Edit: Also, I've said this ever since Stormblood, my dream "relic zone" is Eureka again but with MANUAL LEVEL SYNCING so it's easy to do the level grind with a consistent friend group without worrying about anyone "getting ahead" separately.

      I do wonder if the END Relic is actually a case of cut content. Like they wanted something more involved, but they just didn't have the resources. So they tied in the Hildebrand quests they were already making, even threw in the Asura trial, and added a tomestone vendor NPC (who doesn't even have a desk...) because that was the easiest thing to implement.
