true story 😅@@timgosling6189
Ok, so you think your experience was bad...With the knowledge you've now gained, go ask any friend for their copy of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album and check out the inner sleeve's photo. Interesting huh!?! In those days there was no photoshop, computers were barely in existance, and it had to be done for real. This required the ability of yoga master who could hold his breath for long periods. They did use scuba to help set up the photo. You could possibly imagine how long they spent in the water. Perhaps it was not as bad back then, I don't know. There is a short show on how the artwork was made on TH-cam which you 'may' care to watch. Given your youth, you may not have heard the album, may I suggest you do so. It is considered one of the greatest albums ever made and is really worth listening to. Ask the friend who lends you the album cover to view the art for their opinion as see. Perhaps they will play it for you, but it is on Spotify.
Thanks so much for diving here. It was an interesting experience. Did the ranger provide a reason for the altered lake depth? Also, Do you feel you may have trapped some shrimp inside your gums - between the snorkel mouthpiece and gums, and that they might have been nibbling on the area? This is the only thing I can think of as to your experience - not seeing/feel issues on other sensitive skin areas.
Great vlog again today, I understand that you lifestyle is very difficult at times, but I think there are many of us who really appreciate the content you provide! Cheers from Australia. I hope your trip goes really swell and that you all have a great time!
That looked absolutely brutal! You are definitely a warrior.
I am a sucker for putting myself through silly experiences
Outstanding! I have been wondering what Mono lake would be like to swim in my whole life. Thanks for doing this so I don't have to!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I took a short swim in Mono Lake some years ago and was amazed that I could float with both my arms and legs out of the water! Just make sure you have sufficient rinse water when you get out and don't let the salty water dry on you! Visitor center was top notch!
Agreed!
I’ve swam (basically floated) in Mono lake a couple of times- be sure to put vaseline on your lips and on any cuts before you get in and bring fresh water to rinse off afterwards. I wore my regular swim goggles but be careful when taking them off so the salt water doesn’t run into your eyes. It’s crazy seeing all the little brine shrimp looking back at you! It’s a fun, unique and beautiful place.
Good tip!
Great video - solid content.
Thank you🙏
Great video. One of the most memorable things in my life is driving the 395 on the hill above mono lake and seeing the entire area covered in snow and the beautiful lake. It looked like the Swiss Alps. So beautiful and epic.
Right on!
I've swam around in Mono a bit, and kayaked a bunch. Can confirm the puffy lips from an early foray; I tend to keep my head out these days. Regardless, everything needs a THOROUGH rinse off afterwards. Easy to float though, so that's fun. Sorta the opposite of Crater Lake, where you sink so fast it's downright terrifying.
So true!
Ha Ha! Yeah girl! I did that about 20 years ago. Was slippery but refreshing at first. Super fun to float like a cork! I swam out to that big formation right out in front of the visitor center. I was probably in the water for about a half an hour. When I got out, by the time I walked back up to the parking lot, the webs between my fingers and toes dried out and turned white. Then they turned red with blood because they continued to dry and crack. Same thing happened to my elbows. I felt like a piece of beef jerky! Didn't have enough fresh water to rinse off, so we headed for a hotspring just so I could get that stuff off of me! Great vid!
Thanks!
Kind of like handling wet concrete and then it dries on your skin, nasty feeling.
The Ph of Mono Lake is between 9 - 10. The US Department of Transportation and EPA deem a chemical corrosive 12.5. The Mono Lake water are sufficient alkaline and corrosive enough to damage aluminum and other metals, as well as your skin! You are very brave, and I appreciate your sacrifice to bring us this outstanding video. Thank you!
Thanks for the info!
It was higher in the 1980's when the lake was lower and at risk due to diversion. I visited with a tour group in 1989 and most of us went into the water. As a male, my urethra and sphincter were burning a little almost immediately, but some of the females complained about the water being very harsh and causing redness and swelling on their lady parts.
Been to mono many times over the past 50 years. Never got into the water but always enjoyed the scenery
It's absolutely beautiful!
Yup...... I did that back in 1971.... in a burst of stupidity, I jumped in and swam about ten strokes.... annnnnd immediately turned around and ran on top of the water to get back to the shore. ow, indeed.. Mark Twain has a whole chapter on Mono Lake in "Roughing It" that is well worth the read.
Yes, swimming in Mono Lake can be treacherous. I swam 8+ kilometers in Mono Lake from Navy Beach to the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve. The original swim plan was to swim to Lee Vining Park at the other end of the lake. Unfortunately a lightening storm cut that plan short. I had a support crew on a kayak for a swim that took a little over two hours. The bird wildlife on that lake is incredible, and all of them (birds) observed the idiot swimming by them. I wore goggles and a short farmer John style wet suit, (2 mil). I will not be doing this swim again. I endured 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns to my mouth and tongue, as well as full thickness skin abrasions where the wet suit rubbed on my neck. The high alkali water softens skin tissue. This swim was done August of 2000. As far as I know I'm the only one who has swam this distance in Mono Lake, according to the park ranger.
@@donotto6174 Yup... I've said for years that there is no such thing as a free education: everything you learn, you pay for. You genuinely went the distance for that education.
Yikes!
@@donotto6174 wow!!
@@donotto6174Never heard of a “lightening” storm. Is that a storm of light? Like a bunch of lights? Does it make the Earth lighter when it passes through? Or did you mean “lightning” storm, which is a storm with electrical discharge between the sky and the ground?
I have to ask, how do you not know how to spell lightning? They’re two completely different words
There are several hot springs around that area. My parents took my brother and I to one 30-40 years ago. Turns out that clothing was optional (figured it out when a naked couple hopped in the springs). Great memories.
Oops!
I made an attempt just recently to make it to the island in the center of mono lakec . No wind and glassey conditions. The padel out was easy as that high salt content made paddling effortlessly. Got within striking distance but the wind began to make itself know . I heard of the potential for the wind so I turned back . I was disappointed . I made my way back maybe halfway and a substantial wind and waves came up and saturated by the waves . It was a bit worrisome but I made it back . Took a swim after . I actually enjoyed the water on my skin . It felt soothing . I took a couple dives underwater with no ill affects.
Glad you got the chance to do that!
High concentrations of carbonates in Mono Lake make it very alkaline. The pH of Mono Lake is approximately 10 (this measure of alkalinity is roughly equivalent to household glass cleaner). Because of this high alkalinity, Mono Lake water tastes bitter and feels slippery. Some observers of Mono Lake water claim it feels and behaves a lot like soapy water (sulfates and carbonates are a factor). William Brewer no doubt found this to be the case; however, you may not wish to repeat Mr. Brewer’s laundry experiment-Mono Lake water has a high enough pH to deteriorate clothing and footwear after repeated soakings.
Yup, pretty much what I said in the video😁🤙
@@AzulUnlimitedwhy go in this cesspool? You nuts?
@@cachi-7878 yes, the craziest 😆
@@AzulUnlimited😂
Why would you repeat what she said in the video?
I have visited the Mono Lake area many times when I have been on vacation at Mammoth Lakes. I have walked up close to the shore to look at the alkali flies and saw many birds feeding on the alkali flies. I have also been to the visitor center at Mono Lake. I also learned that in years past native american people that lived near Mono Lake used to collect alkali fly larva. Then dry them out and eat them as food.
Interesting!
When I lived in L.A. I always wanted to get up to Mono Lake and take pictures. Had a couple of photography friends tell me it was worth the trip, but to go in the early Spring time to minimize the flies swarming you. Never thought about diving in the lake, but the shots you got from the water of some of the Tufa structures were cool.
Great job of toughing it out and making this video happen.
Thanks! It was definitely challenging!
Back in 1985 I was in USAF Navigator training at Mather AFB. We used Mono lake as an initial radar fix as the island surrounded by water was easy to see on radar screen.
Cool!
That is pretty cool to see
It was really neat! But damn that water😅
Wonderful video. I love Bishop and pass by Mono Lake all of the time. Brave soul you are snorkeling in salt water.
It’s such a beautiful area 💙
I'm super impressed. I've put my fingers into Mono lake, swimming there is something I've never considered. Glad you checked in with the Ranger. Probably gave them a story to tell!
I’m sure they laugh at anyone dumb enough to get in 😆
Amazing 👏 take care.
Thanks so much💙
Yikes , I have been camping in the Sierras for decades. I cannot imagine diving in Mono Lake. Thanks for doing so to see what happens. Bless you my child.
Thanks for watching!
We visited mono Lake about 10 years ago and my dog and I had a wonderful time swimming around for about a half hour with no ill effects. A little gross because I couldn't shower until we got to our hotel. My husband however would not even stick his foot in. Fun video thank you for sharing your adventure!
Thank you!
Loved the video. I live in California and I've driven by the lake many times. Thanks for the closeup view.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
At of all the time spent at Mono Lake that's the first time I've seen anyone swim in the lake.
There’s a reason. I do not recommend😆😆😆😆
Great video. You're very brave! Mono Lake is both beautiful and creepy. I went there around 4am in the winter (before skying) to take some long exposures before sunrise. It was scary in the pitch black, there was no cell service, and the bog was frozen. Like an idiot, I was wearing Vans... I almost lost one of them in the frozen bog. But I got some cool pics though 😀
Thank you!
As always you never let me down with great videos. Question, what possesed you to get into that water knowing what you knew? Your truly inspirational. 😊
Or just plain crazy🤷♀️😆
I've dove in 1.5 pH sulfuric acid, with Miller hard hat and drysuit. Turned the yellow hard hat olive green, and bleached the red/navy rental drysuit to shades of gray. But, we got the valve fixed! Also, stay away from any sulfide layers, as they will eat the chrome off your regulator and valves.
In the Great Lakes, a 5mm skin-in wetsuit (like Henderson Gold Core) is usually good for most dives above the thermocline (at ~60 feet), and short dives below. For paddling on lakes, recommend full 0.5 - 3mm wetsuit and boots if there's any floating green algae in summer, and thicker 5 - 7mm in fall/winter/spring. Yes, it will be hot in summer, but not getting poisoned by the algae is the best. I've had exposed skin go numb up to where the wetsuit covered the skin. Anatoxin A (also known as VFDF (very fast death factor)) is not something to play with!
Thanks!
OMG girl that was crazy, hats off to you trying it but wow what an adventure LOL
Thanks!
You're a brave lady Sarah! We get it you have to check that box and have that experience but gross conditions I'd be worried about inhaling a few pesky flies 🥱 Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter
Hahaha the shrimp were way more gross to me! 😆
Dayum!!! That was straight gangster girl!!!!! 😂. By the way, I saw the video of you modeling the dive weather parka for the Circle H channel!!! I really think we need a special name for your modeling style…. My submission is “goofball chic”!!!

It was the setting for the Clint Eastwood classic "High Plains Drifter".
My favorite Clint line from the movie:
"It's what a man knows about himself inside that makes him afraid"
Great line!
Amazing place. Last time I was there was in February 2012, it was 8 degrees F, and ice was floating in it. So, no diving LOL. Trudged across the snow and put my canoe in the water. Then carefully paddled a couple hundred yards out. No wind, smooth as glass and visibility 10-0 feet. . Took water samples from 90, 40 and 10 feet depths using a homemade rig. Was looking for certain species of algae. Found what I was looking for. 😊
That's so cool! Glad you didn't accidently fall in. That would have been NOT fun!
How long did it take you to wash all the shrimp out of your hair? And how long did it take you to warm up? Abby cuddles to the rescue!
It wasn’t too bad😅 good thing I had some hot shower water handy
Haha I hadn't heard of this before, thanks for the video

Never even considered swimming in that lake. Driven by it, and swam in streams that fed it. Interesting stuff.

If you haven’t already done so…Dive Crystal Bay Lake Tahoe while in the area. Also the petrified forest in South Lake then the drop off south of Bliss State park beach and picnic area! Mono Lake is beautiful, couldn’t imagine diving there, I love camping near south beach, thanks for this cool video.Pura Vida
Thanks for the tip!
I was tempted to go for a swim when I was there, but couldn't get past the flies and definitely did not have enough water to rinse off, or a acid bath given the alkalinity😂 Almost lost a shoe too at one point even though it was August and during a drought. Beautiful and peaceful spot and area, especially Bodie just north. Couple nice hot springs too, would love to revisit.
It is beautiful!
“I don’t want to ruin my scuba gear…”
What about the person attached to the scuba gear? Be safe out there!
Will do!
Hi Sarah, if you haven’t already, Lake Mohave would be a good dive experience. It’s a national park, part of The Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Also part of the Mighty Colorado River which makes for super clear water. The lake is in between Nevada & Arizona. There is a local dive shop here in Bullhead City,AZ that could give you some info on good dive spots. Should put it on your list of places to visit, think it would be worth the trip.😉👍

Holy Shivering Gear Rinse!! Great video!
Hahaha it was a cold one!
I went and it was really cool the oils in your skin are sucked out and make the water hazy and you are really buoyant…. Definitely do it but it’s strange experience … I went it near a fresh water stream to wash off it … that was a good call
You definitely need a good rinse after going here!
Whoa..glad you did that so I know not to…see ya in Baja!
Hahaha see you sooooon!!!!
Recommend you research the arsenic levels. East of Reno is Fallon where the water is alkaline and the arsenic level was above drinking standards , the city was under pressure forever to get the arsenic down to acceptable levels.
Good point
Back in 1982 at its lowest level then the arsenic level was around 17 ppm, it fluctuates based on rainfall and runoff from the Sierra Nevada, the EPA level not to exceed is at .01 ppm not ppb , I am retired now but was an Industrial Water Treatment specialist dealing with chemical treatment of cooling and heating systems for 35 years, in Northern California over into Nevada . I mentioned Fallon due to the local water we tested was soft but alkaline with arsenic being present and for years the local population was drinking and using it. I have driven many times past Mono Lake but I was always was on my way to fish up in the Sierra Nevada from Tahoe down to Lone Pine. An absolute beautiful part of our country that many have never seen. Perhaps the most stunning view is during the winter on a full moon clear night with the Sierra Nevada range lit up by the moonlight driving up Highway 395.
I’ve been there a lot of times and that water look so clean, never see that before . That’s water is like a dense green soup really sticky and look like poisonous water every time I’ve there.
It really is!
I was just in Oregon at a hot springs 6 miles outside of Paisley. The water in the showers and the hot springs gives your skin a slippery texture. People say it’s the alkaline water.
yup

Personally, if I were in a parking lot and I saw a stranger having a rinse off and with a towel wrapped round her, I might just go away till she got dressed before starting a conversation? Or did I misunderstand the situation?

Did the flies bite you? You didn’t mention that, so assume they weren’t interested? Also, is it just the flies & brine shrimp who live in that water? No fish?
They don’t bite, but they were everywhere! As far as I understand, no fish in the lake. It’s a tough environment to live in 😅
The flies don’t even land on you. If you put a foot down on the lakeshore where they form a black band at the water’s edge, they form a wide circle around your foot. It’s weird but cool.
Thanks. I visited mono lake about 25 or 30 years ago It is beautiful, but other than stepping into the water, I have no desire to go swimming in Mono Lake.
Haha! I can understand why.
Thanks. That was very interesting. I've visited Mono Lake several times but didn't know people swim there too. I like that you pronounce it "mahno" lake. I do too, maybe because I'm from the east. When I lived in Bishop, CA, a little south of there, people said I should call it "moeno" lake. I guess it's just a regional difference but it was hard to not say mahno. 🤙
Thank!
Mahno sounds like Mano, which is Spanish for Hand. Mono is Spanish for Monkey.
@@teremertz So, Hand Lake or Monkey Lake? :)
Pink Floyd's famous album cover for 'Wish You Were Here' involved a snorkel diver who had to do a handstand underwater in Mono Lake with his legs pointing out of the water for long enough for the ripples to dissipate before the photo was taken. That must have been a total P.I.T.A., but made for an incredible picture.
I didn’t know about that. Dedication!
How come there's no beach foam along the shoreline?
I've not been there since 2005, but during then and the 90s I was there a lot and there was always foam out to 20 feet from the shore

No, it’s called snorkeling
freediving or snorkeling, but some people will refer to 'diving' as either activity. I used the GoPro 11
I could probably handle the flies and the shrimps and the salty, but the alkaline water slowly dissolving my body would probably discourage me unless a grizzly bear was chasing me.
Yeah, not too fun.
Is this scuba or snorkeling?
Snorkeling

Crazy video - thanks for sharing. I did a lot of skiing around Mammoth and did not know that about Mono Lake. Your lips might have become swollen due to all the shrimp and salt content. I am not allergic to shrimp but if I eat too much shellfish my lips swell.
I don’t think it was an allergy. I don’t believe I’m allergic to anything… I think it was the salt how basic the water is, but who knows👀
Love the video! My wife and did our honeymoon their
Nice!
You couldn’t pay me to go in that water. Yech!!
Well, I probably won't do it again.
Uh, hell no!! Just the flies alone, hell no! I enjoyed watching it from your perspective though.

All I can think about is Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here. It would have been fitting Music for this excellent video.
Haha!
l feel it should be renamed Windex Lake.
Haha!
Its really not that bad I've swam in mono many times, I wouldn't recommend the hot spring at navy beach though (super high in arsenic and other nasty stuff, also its just a mud hole). Its pretty cool to kayak around the tufa though it's an oddly eerie experience. One of my favorite times at mono we were chilling at navy beach cooling off after hiking Panum crater and there was a suv coming so I told my friends watch this. I ran over to the truck and grabbed my fishing pole cast out and started pretending to fish, when the car showed up it was some dumbasses from socal and the first thing out of their mouths was "how's the fishing?" I popped open the cooler and showed them all the fish we'd caught on the loop that morning. They were all excited getting their gear out to catch the big one while we were pulling out, I'm probably an asshole but we had some good laughs around the campfire that night lol.
HaHa!

After a day of kayaking on the lake, my short was saturated with the salt water, and there was enough salt to make my short stand by itself after I took it off and dry it. The water was so slippery that my hands were just sliding all over my paddle. There was no fresh water anywhere to rinse so had to ride back to the hotel with this thick layer of chemical on your body. Won't do it again.
It's definitely a different experience!
The slippery is the alkaline water converting the fats on the surface of your skin into soap.
Lye will dissolve animals entirely if you use enough of it.
