    If the late, great Scott Ross had chosen the pianoforte as his primary instrument he would have been an internatinal superstar, which would have made him rich and famous. Instead he took the road less travelled and stayed true to his vision and passion of playing (primarily) baroque music on the the harpsichord.
    He led a very modest life, spending several years in a small rustic farmhouse in France living alone, except for his cats. Considering the fact that he died at the age of 38, the amount of music that he recorded is phenomenal. Being the first person to record all 555 keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti and a huge amount of music composed by other Baroque masters, I cannot begin to imagine what he else he would have accomplished had lived a normal lifespan. Rest in Peace, Maestro, and thank you for the timeless musical treasures that you left behind for us to enjoy.

      I'm glad he stuck to harpsichord, because he perfected that art and showed how articulate and sensitive you can play on the instrument. Simply the greatest ever.

      Concordo, il Maestro Scott Ross è il più grande clavicembalista dei tempi moderni. La sua inarrivabile interpretazione dello spartito è un perfetto mix di sopraffina tecnica e incredibile pathos.

    One of the amazing things about Scarlatti was that he was able to create such great music within the limited form within which he chose to compose. He succeeded in expanding that Baroque paradigm and stamped his name on it, so to speak. Okay, so sometimes he repeated himself, but when you write 555 sonatas it's almost impossible to avoid doing that. The truth is that most of the great composers also did it, to some degree, and you can't really plagiarize yourself. I'm on my second go-around of listening to all of the sonatas (as performed by the late, great Scott Ross) and I never get tired of listening to this superb music.

      a minor correction: Scarlatti certainly composed many other kinds of works, it's just that they're mostly lost. A precious exception is the Stabat Mater. Well worth a listen. I'm an expert after watching the two part documentary on him found on here! Required viewing I'd say for anyone wanting to play his stuff.

      @@theonesaracen6289 I saw that same doc on YT. At times it seemed like a dressed-up travelogue or a NAT. GO. special but I did pick up a few important facts. For instance I didn't know that D.S. had written 3 (or was it 4?} Masses.
      I did know, however, that he didn't seriously take up the keyboard concerto form for which he is most well-known until the last half of his life, beginning when he went to Portugal. Obviously you would agree that his Stabat Mater is an incredible work, both musically and spiritually. Thank you for your astute and very helpful comments.

      @@theonesaracen6289 I saw that same documentary on YT. Although at times it seemed to be like a dressed-up travelogue or an old NAT. GEO. special, I did learn some interesting things about Scarlatti; for example, that he wrote 3 (or was it 4?) Masses while he was employed at The Vatican and, as you noted, his Stabat Mater is a very powerful work both musically and spiritually.
      I did know, however, that D.S. didn't commit himself to writing his unique style of keyboard concerti until he came to Portugal, where he had the Princess (and later Queen) Maria Barbara as his prize pupil. (Lucky her!) Thank you for your astute and thoughtful comments.

    This might be a stupid (but legit question) from a newbie; are Scarlatti sonatas adhering to the standard sonata form (same present on Mozart, Beethoven & Brahms)? Or is it some proto-sonata with missing/different elements? I ask that because apparently (in my newbie view) Scarlatti participated in the transition from Baroque to Classical period so I sometimes wonder this might be a "rustic" sonata & not fully conformant to the sonata from the classical/romantic periods.

    • @leforain
      @leforain หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, Sonata from the baroque period did not follow the typical Sonata form that you are referring to. "Sonata" simply meant "to sound," played on instruments, as opposed to a piece of music that was sung.
