淨空法師: 魔王波旬何以入魔道？Why did Demon King become a demon?

問：下面一個問題，
Next question:
老法師講經中說「佛和魔是一不是二，
The Venerable Master said in his lectures, "Buddha and demons are one, not two.
覺者為佛，迷者為魔」。
Those who are awakened are Buddhas, and those who are deluded are demons.”
請問世尊住世時，
May I ask, when Shakyamuni Buddha incarnated in this world,
魔王波旬存在的因緣為何？
what was the reason for the coexistence of Demon King Bo Xun?
答：魔王是代表迷的這一面，
Answer: The demon king represents the delusional mind,
佛是代表覺的這一面，
Buddha represents enlightenment.
迷悟不同。
Enlightenment and delusion are different.
而這個迷悟是在六道裡面，
Both enlightenment and delusional mind are within the six realms.
六道之外只有覺，沒有迷。
Beyond the six realms there are only awakened beings and no delusion.
迷，他才有善惡，
Delusion consists of good and evil.
才有三善道跟三惡道的出現，
Therefore, the three good realms and the three evil realms exist together.
那你就曉得，
So you know,
魔王是六道輪迴裡面的，
this demon is in the six realms of reincarnation.
他怎麼變成魔？福報大，
How did he become a demon? He had great blessing,
行善修福福報大。
had done good deeds and cultivated good blessings, and the rewards were great.
為什麼變成魔？煩惱沒斷，
Why then did he become a demon? He was greatly afflicted with
貪瞋痴慢很重，
greed, anger, stupidity and pride.
他修福，他斷惡修善，
He cultivated blessings, abandoned evil and cultivated good,
他修福他不覺。
He cultivated blessings, but did not awaken.
覺他就屬於佛這邊，
If he had awakened, then he would have been on Buddha's side;
他不覺就屬於魔那邊，
unawakened, he belongs to the devil's side.
魔是這麼來的，
This is how he became a demon.
所以魔有大威德、有大福報。
Therefore, demons have great blessings and mighty powers, but severe character flaws.
問：第二個問題，
Second question:
魔王波旬對世尊說
Demon King Bo Xun said to Shakyamuni Buddha
「末法時期，讓他的魔子魔孫來破壞佛法」,
"At the end of the Dharma, my demon descendants will come to destroy Buddhism."
請問這是什麼原因？
What is the reason?
答：這個原因，我想你只要冷靜去想一想，
Answer: For this reason, I think you just need to calm down and think about it.
你就明白了，
You will understand that
總不出嫉妒、障礙。
the greatest reasons are their jealousy and the obstacles they create.
釋迦牟尼佛當年在世，
When Shakyamuni Buddha was still alive,
波旬對佛就看不順眼，
Bo Xun did not like the Buddha.
為什麼？
Why?
佛的名氣太大超過他，
Buddha's fame is so great that it surpasses him.
眾生對釋迦牟尼佛的恭敬
Sentient beings greatly respect Sakyamuni Buddha
超過對他，
more than him;
供養也超過對他。
yet the offerings to him are more than adequate.
他的貪瞋痴慢沒有減少，
His greed, anger, stupidity and arrogance have not diminished;
他不是「勤修戒定慧，息滅貪瞋痴」,
the demon is not "cultivating precepts diligently, concentration and wisdom, while eradicating greed, anger, and ignorance."
他是什麼？
What does he cultivate?
他真的勤修戒定慧沒有斷滅貪瞋痴，
Although he diligently cultivates precepts, concentration, and wisdom, he does not eliminate greed, anger, and delusion.
所以他的戒定慧會變成福報，變成福德。
Therefore, his impure cultivation of precepts, concentration, and wisdom turned into only limited blessings instead of true merit (wisdom and blessing, virtue, etc.)
佛法的勤修戒定慧的目的是息滅貪瞋痴，
The purpose of diligent practice of precepts, concentration, and wisdom in Buddhism is to eliminate greed, anger, and ignorance.
所以成就的是功德,
So what is achieved is merit,
成就的是智慧，
What is achieved is wisdom,
不一樣。
not the same as limited blessings.
佛對於魔王他的神通、
As for the psychic power of the demon king,
法力、福報沒話說，
Buddha has nothing to say about this power or the blessings of the demon king.
佛不嫉妒，
Buddha is not jealous,
佛弟子也不嫉妒，
neither are his disciples.
比什麼都清楚。
They know more clearly than anyone that things as demonic powers cannot really help them achieve real happiness.
因為佛弟子不要這個東西，
Buddhist disciples do not desire what the demon desires.
他要修苦行，
True Buddhists practice asceticism.
苦行裡面不會增長貪瞋痴。
Greed, anger, and delusion will not grow in asceticism.
他福報裡面會增長，
Greed, anger, and delusion can actually grow if you have blessings.
你沒有相當的定慧，
If you don’t have enough meditative concentration and wisdom to use your blessings wisely,
你控制不住肯定增長。
you will not be able to control these negative qualities and they will increase, especially if accompanied by great blessings.
就是因為這個原因，
It is for this reason,
所以佛才堅持他自己以身作則，
that the Buddha insisted on setting the example by himself,
一生修苦行。
practicing asceticism throughout his life.
他要不做個示範，
If he did not set an example,
後世的弟子怎麼能相信？
how could his disciples of the next generation believe and experience the essence of his wisdom?
他是先把樣子做出來給我們看。
He did it first to show us.
所以這是我們要感恩，
This is what we have to be thankful for.
我們要能夠體會到佛為什麼這麼做法。
We need to be able to understand why the Buddha practiced asceticism.
