So is the base model Mac Mini worth it for most people?

    • @stuarthepburn6508

absolutely. I got the base 256GB version, bought a small thunderbolt NVMe enclosure and a 4TB NVMe drive and I boot from that, so now I have faster drive speeds using the external, the only thing you don't have is Apple AI but who cares.

I’ve had great fun ‘sooping’ up my Mac Mini.
My new kit includes a Mac Mini M4, with 24 Gb of RAM, and a small
    hard drive.
I have added a Samsung 995 Pro 2TB SSD, in an Acasis container,
and have a docking unit to support my data and music backup files.
Using the 'Apple Support' instructions, I now have all my o/s on my
external SSD, and my internal 256 Drive is 'empty', my transfer speeds
    are at c. 2800mb/s.
Everything works, it's per Apple instructions: sorted, and I’ve saved in
excess of £600, over buying the big 2TB equivalent.

I almost bought a MacMini to use as a cable box paired to my 75" Samsung TV. Basically a living room set up that would allow me to stream video content and use my living room TV as a computer monitor. Actually opted to just use my MBP instead since I already owned it, and moving it from office to living room wasn't a big deal, but if I had a MacMini not filling a void, I would definitely put it to work in that capacity. I even bought a little tray that holds a spare magic keyboard and trackpad I had. I can hold the tray in my lap while I'm using the TV as my monitor. Almost laptop like, but with a really big monitor. Jerry Schultz did a video on his UT channel showing off Mac accessories and the tray for the KB and TP started the whole idea. Good seeing you Jon and thanks for the video!

@@JonAdamsTech Good point Jon! That makes sense! Might actually work better since it has a lower profile! As is the MBP works fine and moving from one location is pretty simple since I have a charger and MagSafe cable in both locations. Just have to disconnect power and HDMI and then reconnect.

The new Mac mini is such a great computer and incredible value. The MacBook Air just fits my workflow too perfectly. I take it on the go to work at a coffee shop every now and then. And it goes to church on Sunday to run our livestream. Docked in clamshell mode in my home office when I need to get serious work done. The base model M2 Air I have just does everything I need it to. And it’s mobile too.

I'm upgrading from my old Mac mini to the M4 base with upgrades. Mostly interested in being able to get Logic Pro for music production and the Final Cut Pro for video edits. I upgraded to 2TB and 24GB plus I will have a new 2TB Glyph external drive to backup to. I have a 4 input usb adaptor for my camera, printer and MOTU4 on my current device. I figure it will be just fine on the new device. I haven't purchased yet. I tend to keep my devices a long time!

It really depends, because (when the M4 version comes) you can get the same chip in a laptop for $999-$1300 (depending on display size and cores) which basically means $999 -$599 (mac mini) the laptop is only $400-$700. But if you already have a laptop or just want to get something simple for a relative or kid then this is a great deal.

I'm a bit confused as a Windows user. Being a network engineer, I need to run multiple virtual devices in network simulators like GNS3 or CML. Since I'm unfamiliar with how Apple manages RAM, could you advise me on the best configuration? Should I go for 32GB RAM with 256GB storage or 24GB RAM with 512GB storage?

    • @JonAdamsTech
      @JonAdamsTech  วันที่ผ่านมา

Since you're using virtual machines, my guess is you don't need much storage, so I'd go with more ram. I'm not super familiar with your workflow though so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the content, I really liked it and subscribed to your channel. I’m trying to understand why I need 512GB but I couldn’t find a reason.
It is because I have 2 TB google cloud storage and I don’t need hundreds of apps which should work specifically in the internal SSD. I have gigabit internet so downloading files is not a problem. I still think if I need 16GB or 24 GB ram to be future proof. I don’t use laptop or desktop for gaming or business purposes. I just like fast devices. In my cases do I miss anything? What do you recommend me?

I bought mine a month ago to replace an Intel Nuc and use alongside my imac 27 inch 2019, Put simply there are numerous faults with the machine overall and I'm not only person to see and recognise them. The major issue is the download wifi speed. If anything is plugged into any of the sockets (except HDMI) ??? you loose a significant portion of download speed on wifi. In my instance its about 50 percent. Regarding memory- if I have two programs open- activity monitor and chrome with one tab open I am using 10-11 gb of Memory, using Safari instead its about 10GB of memory, this is without all the AI bullshit which will eat more memory (it's the reason they upgraded it). So sure while my 250 gig hard drive is being used for swap there really isn't a vast amount of headroom. The storage isn't an issue as I have a LOT of external storage which I'm pretty sure my wifi doesn't like.
