  • Metrocenter was a regional enclosed shopping mall in northwest Phoenix, Arizona. It was bounded by Interstate 17, 31st, Dunlap and Peoria Avenues. Before its closure, the three most recently open anchor stores were Harkins Theatres, Walmart Supercenter, and Dillard's Clearance Center; three additional vacant anchor stores included former Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's locations. The mall featured 100 stores, a 12 screen movie theater, and a food court. Since January 2021, the mall had been owned by the Carlyle Development Group based in New York City. The mall officially closed on June 30, 2020.

IMO it lost its soul when it was made over in the early 90’s. The fountains, the sculptures, the sunken rest areas, the Christmas decor (with the vibrating snow slide?), the ice rink, the huge scoops at the entrances, of course the Alley and the AMAZING tile work throughout the interior.

In 1973 me and my friend rode our bikes from Glendale to the Metro Center Mall. We did not know anything about the mall which was under construction at the time. We rode our bikes inside the mall on the second floor. After about 5 minutes a construction worker spotted us and told us we need to leave as it was dangerous to be in there during construction. We left but I still have that memory from my youth. I spent all of my HS weekend’s cruising around the mall and bought my wife’s wedding ring at Kay Jewelers in 1986. It is sad for me to see this mall close but if it morphs into something new which will help our economy I’m for it.

Did the same. Rode there, West Valley Mall and Christown on our bikes from 67th and Missouri area. Metrocenter was a destination and now it's just an asterisk...

Very informative. Our family lived near Metrocenter from 1974-2005. Metrocenter was part of our lives. It was the ultimate in shopping, fun and entertainment. Anything you desired, it was there. I thought of it almost as a amusement park. The sights, sounds and food. You could spend a whole day there. I don't have to tell you how it was when the holidays arrived. The whole mall was decorated. It was packed with shoppers.
The very last time I was at Metrocenter before it's decline, was in 2004. You could tell the magic was gone. Some stores had closed and there were vacant spaces. You never saw that before. You slowly heard the news over the years that the major anchor stores were closing at the mall. By then, we had moved long ago. Finally, the last nail hit the coffin in 2020 when it was announced Metrocenter was officially closing. It was like losing a longtime friend.
Sure there was competition, newer malls, online shopping to contribute to it's demise, but never will there be a mall like Metrocenter. Ever.

The slow decline of the mall was say maybe around 2006 or 2008 because I remember going there as a 6th grade trip and started to realize that it was in trouble.
Arizona mills had more business compared to metro center mall in 2008. Stores were closing only few good ones were still open including with the arcade. After that more and more stores were closing and the mall wasn’t how I remembered afterwards. It seems like my childhood was ending after 6th grade because some of the things that I grew up were closing or ceasing to exist.
Many of the things in phoenix Arizona that I grew up with and I would consider what made Phoenix awesome no longer exists. Sadly I no longer look at the city the same way anymore m, maybe if things from my childhood still existed there. Maybe it would still feel the exact say way it did when I was a child.

@@treykoyawena4443 Phoenix, AZ is foreign to me now. Last time I visited was in 2014. The neighborhood where we lived is ghetto now. They're building where desert once was. I doubt if Phoenix is the same as when I last visited. If I visited now, I would be a total stranger, even though I was born and raised there.

The one thing I remember about Metro Center was the Metro Lounge bar, the outside of which was shaped like an airliner, with livery that looked a lot like TWA's at the time. It also had windows about the size you'd see on a commercial airliner, that overlooked the ice skating rink. The Metro Lounge was also where I met my girlfriend in 1979, which was also where she worked at the time, she was 19 when I met her (before they raised the drinking age to 21). I also remember the Metro Port food court. This brings back a lot of good memories, when people actually went to the mall for Christmas shopping, I guess online retail had a lot to do with the mall's gradual decline in the last 20 years.

I managed to visit this mall back in 2019, at that time didn't know it was about to close. I should've. It was completely dead and the entire second floor was closed off to the public. I really liked it and it's a shame it's gone now.

In the '90s me and a deceased friend were going group home to group home as boys and we were placed in a home near Metro center we discovered this mall when the ice rink had already been gone five or six years and Metro Midway was installed and active
Does anybody remember the section of Metro Midway where the bathrooms were by concessions on the bottom next to the stairwell and escalator that led up to the top??? just around that corner was Sonic blast man the very first video game that used a punching bag to test your strength... Every person that was a jock wanted to be that game but they couldn't cuz the game was meant to wear you out before you finish the final stage and your knuckles are raw
