Absolutely fantastic analysis. While I’ve personally interpreted the main overall them of Octopath 2 being hope triumphing over despair, there’s an undeniable theme with the individual travelers fighting back greed and selfishness with love and compassion. The two rather go hand in hand, I suppose.

Ok but this makes so much more sense now. I never actually noticed Ochette actually connected to Osvald story like that.
It feels so good that every tine I go back to octopath 2 (or the octopath series in general) I find out about these different details that conmect the dots of apparently more separate stories all together.
And your amazing work is to thank for that as well!!!

Oswald would had been proud over this great analyse and conclusion, fantastic video, and the editing was well themed for this topic, good work. Thumps up, and my form is filled out for the next trip.

This is an incredible video. I think you did an excellent job with how you handled your theory, providing very clear evidence to support you hypothesis. You should definitely keep up the good work!

I heavily agree with the end statement explaining the roles! This is an rpg that wants to tie in the characters identity with their story.

21:31 Also the reason why Galdera killed Orsa was due to Galdera not wanting to have the world shared equally by the other gods

19:26 I Have to object to your take about Champions of the Continent.
CotC has a more nuanced approach toward the theme of human desires.
For the whole game the desires for wealth/power/fame are seen as part of the human nature, both of heroes and villains.
The entire final chapter is about the importance of desires, Sazantos plan is seen as flawed because even in Sazantos "perfect world" the heroes (aka the eight lights) notice that the removal of desires have turned the entire humanity inward, content with the present and lacking of any form of ambition, innovation and hope for the future, and the ending itself is entirely about how hope and desires are interconnected.
Sazantos himself (in his post-game diary unlock) admits that even he, at the very end, couldn't entirely let go his own desires.
If I have to summarize CotC approach toward desires is that human desires aren't inherently good or evil.
However those desires that are hyper-focused on the past, with fixing past failures at all cost, recovering lost wealth, influence or fame, obtaining vengeance and retribution, resurrecting deads, etc.. eventually became obsessions that are both destructive and self-destructive in nature.
While at the same time those desires that are projected towards the future are the power that let humanity growth and propels the world forward.

@@stefanoanselmi12 Thank you for expanding on the COTC lore! As I said I hadn’t finished the game yet but was vaguely familiar with the themes, and just had a through line pop into my head regarding all three games.
I’m glad COTC is more nuanced than I was aware of. Here’s hoping I find time to finish it soon :)

To me it's quite simple. Other types of magic like lightning can be used in multiple ways, so One True Magic is the same as them. Osvald has based his equation on his other spells because that's what he knows best. Also, both he and Ochette gained exactly the power they currently needed to get what they desired.
(Osvald needed to defeat Harvey to protect his daughter, and Ochette was told she needs her beasts to protect her people)

So i originally thought on my first Octopath 2 playthrough that OTM was The Shadow which is very easy to think why i thought this. Of course after playing through the game more i knew better. I still kind of think The shadow is/was a counterpart to OTM or at least somewhat related. After all where there is Light/love there is always Shadow....

    • @wjamesmci
      @wjamesmci 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Edit: actually you kind of say this at the end. The Shadow is Greed, in all its forms through Octopath Traveler 2 and COTC

I mean, it's not technically wrong, D'arqest used the power of the Shadow rather than the One True Magic to open the pit

I also wonder if the OTM comes more naturally to those who are part of the Lumina Clan. Hikari, who is the son of Kura and part of a clan that fought back against the night seems to have powers that allowed him to hold back and eventually counter the shadow within his blood turning it into an aura of light rather than the power of Vide, we also see this with Rita and Elena who were both used for their blood to draw forth the OTM.
I also would like to theorize why it is that the lack of greed causes this magic to come through, simply put it, the magic is of the soul, spirit magic or "Dawn" Magic that is granted by Aelfric and the other gods as a fuel source for human spirit, while Vide's is a corruption of this, thus why those with greed can still tap into it. Vide's power overwrites the limiter and allows you to tap into this power which is why despite Rita and Elena's blood were used it still drew forth the Shadow, because their innate magic was corrupted by Vide into the Shadow magic but like with Hikari with enough will and forgoing desire it can be overcome.

Actually, I thought about something that could be relevant. So, Master Juvah refers to the flame that Ochette is blessed by as the "FIrst Flame" this is clearly referring to the part of the Sacred Flame that is found on Toto'haha. Similarly, the hero who stopped D'arqest originally, Kal, was directly connected to the Sacred Flame that was held in the Fellsun ruins. This has lead me to believe that the OTM is connected in some way to the Sacred Flame, perhaps in a similar way to how Sazantos and Rondo can wield a physical form of the Sacred Flame, Ochette and Osvald can wield the "elemental" (Definitely the wrong word to use in this but I can't think of a better one) version of it. Additionally, the final battle between Harvey and Osvald could be seen as the second coming of of the battle between D'arqest and Kal; a dark mage who can create monsters (that is literally something Harvey does) vs against a wizard wishing to protect.
