I am American, but I knew about the Hep Stars and the Hootenanny Singers from Abba. When I was in Stockholm, I bought a Hep Stars cassette, "Juke Box Memories". Benny Anderson was genius, still is.
If you were around 10 in the early 60's and grew up on the outskirts of civilisation, in Norway - and had a 4 year old brother that just had spent his first earnings on a cheap portable "Bambino" record player - believe me, this was hot stuff. Getting hold of a HEP STARS single in those days was an exiting thing. Your hands were trembling the first time you put it on. They never played this type of music on Norwegian radios - you had to turn into Swedish ones. The next thing my brother bought was a pair of copies of shoes that the Beatles wore. You wouldn't believe it ! There were scenes in the schoolyard like in the opening scene of "A Hard Days Night." My brother - the hero of the day - had to be rescued by teachers and was for his own safety kept indoors. The day Paul McCartney got married, the girls in school were very mellow and stuck to themselves and cried silent tears in the corners. Times were different and we threw ourselves over anything that would give us a glimps of what was to come. That's why HEP STARS were so great !
That keyboard player is 15/16 year old Benny Andersson (ABBA). He joined the Hep Stars at age 15. That is when the Hep Stars took off. Benny then started writing original material for the Hep Stars. Benny's first instrument was the accordion at age 6. He started playing piano at age 10. Benny is self taught. The first song he wrote for the Hep Stars was 'No Response'. A minor hit. The second song he wrote for HS was 'Sunny Girl. A major hit. Number 1. Benny met Bjorn (ABBA) in 1966. They were both the musical motors of their respective bands. In 1969 Benny met Anni-Frid Lyngstad (ABBA). She was a Swedish national award winning vocalist. Also in 1969, Bjorn met Agnetha Falkskog (ABBA) she was a composer and Swedish pop star. Bjorn & Benny made an album together in 1970 & had their girlfriends sing backup on a song, 'Hey Old Man'. Bjorn & Benny knew that the girls were way better singers and sounded beautiful together. ABBA was born, without anyone knowing it yet. The first song together as an official group (Pre ABBA name) was 'People Need Love' . Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaes have been writing together since 1966. 1966 - present. That is a quick & short history of Hep Stars keyboard player Benny Andersson.
yes Hep Stars 4-ever.
Hvil i fred/Rest in Peace.
Thanks for sharing! Svenne Hedlund said recently,"we're still the greatest", and I believe it after this performance. The Hep Stars were hot, and Benny Andersson was a god on keyboards even then.
Ive got a old homevideo from '96 where im 1 y.o dancing in diapers to this absolute banger. I literally went from the maternity ward into my dads all blacked out '66 Coupe Deville hehe
Maggie Alexandersson
Two questions come to mind: 1) When did Benny decide not to wear the first sweater he found in the drawer and start thinking: 'Satin, feathers…that's more like it!, and 2) Why is the guitarist not banging his head?
I have always wondered about that guitarist. His name is Janne Frisk and I swear he's so immobile on stage he could've been a member of the Blue Öyster Cult.
Well, if you liked this one, do listen to the 1979 BBC recording of Waterloo live, including its coda. Regrettably the night of the concert (from 6 available) that Ludwig chose to release the recent ABBA Live in Wembley CD/DVD, in that song his piano playing is much more restrained. Instead at the BBC's chosen day, Benny was playing Rachmaninov-fast arpeggios swept by the groove, together with the Bass players and all there. Waterloo was the energetic last cusp of the night playlist, being followed by emotive songs to cool down and put a warm vibe on concert-goers for sure. Ooh! what a blast that performance is, best Waterloo live ever, and this is a difficult feat with the many performances of that iconic tune, including the pure innocence of their Eurovision world outing. A good snippet of the very same superb performance was included in the Video Special of 1979 Live tour, right at the cinematic intro mixed with concert footage, travel action and such.
+FWFWFWF Not if their first record came out in 1967 and this was in '65. Maybe Doors were listening to the Hep. Thank god they didn't see the hair flipping :)
VILA I FRID SVENNE HEDLUND. 🌹⚘🌹
Tack för din tid med oss Svenne. Musiken lämnar du kvar.
❤Fantastisk artist. Stor saknad vila I frid 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Jag såg dem live i Mjölby Folkets Park 1968. Fantastiskt.
I am American, but I knew about the Hep Stars and the Hootenanny Singers from Abba. When I was in Stockholm, I bought a Hep Stars cassette, "Juke Box Memories". Benny Anderson was genius, still is.
Björn and Benny
Grym låt i tiden...
they keyboardist is Benny Anderson, one of the four ABBA's in the 70s.....

Back when Sweden was hip.:D Now we are only Jihad.

How are you 10 and your 4 year old brother is cooler than you?
@@gordonshumway8190 Pretty sure he meant "4 year oldER brother"
@@Varangian_af_Scaniae Haha! Well said :(
R.I.P. Svenne. Thank you for the music ♥️

Thanks for sharing! Svenne Hedlund said recently,"we're still the greatest", and I believe it after this performance. The Hep Stars were hot, and Benny Andersson was a god on keyboards even then.
Benny is SO TALENTED and this band is really good!
Awesome band! The should have become more popular overseas!!
Woooo..Cadillac..min favoritlåt under 60-talet...Grymt å se dom igen såhär!!
Vince Taylor did this song as "Brand New Cadillac". Great sixties Rock song! Nice to see young Benny Anderson on keys!
In fact I've understood it was Vince Taylor who wrote this song!
Taylor along with Johnny Kidd were the first British rock'n'rollers.
Sweden's most popular band…until April 6, 1974.
Jeg glemmer de aldri!!! Danset mye til Hep Stars. Tusen takk
An old version of headbanging 😎 😂 love it!!!!!
Hepstars were absolut guld I persons öra i finland...say wild and reckless...almost as good as The Renegades...🔥💥✨
One of the truly classics! Still works

Wow! Det här är KULTUR!
Såg dom i Edsvära 1965, vilka killar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two questions come to mind: 1) When did Benny decide not to wear the first sweater he found in the drawer and start thinking: 'Satin, feathers…that's more like it!, and 2) Why is the guitarist not banging his head?
jensj2 1. Don't know. 2. He was busy playing, like the drummer, or he thought it was silly?
You're right. It's funny as hell, aint it?
I have always wondered about that guitarist. His name is Janne Frisk and I swear he's so immobile on stage he could've been a member of the Blue Öyster Cult.
Hep Stars is the best!!!
Vilka tider......
Revearsed headbanging!
Love this!
This is GREAT!!!!!
Lot of fun watching this clip.Great.Never heard of those guys.Danke!
The keyboardist is Benny Andersson...aka of ABBA.
had never heard benny play like that! he's on fire! wow!
they sound like the doors! no wonder they were a hit!

De e nåt speciellt med gammal musik !
Were these guys considered the Beatles of Sweden?
YES :-)
I like old music ! the 60ties and 70ties !
+Michael Lantz Never.
Yes prey much
One member of the Hep Stars claimed it was the Beatles who influenced them to start a band and grow out their hair
Hep Stars.Kanon +++++
Härligt såg dom i L krona
Kommer ihåg d sååå härligt
Benny is the real star here.
The Clash did a great cover of this smash hit.
The original is Vince Taylor and the Playboy's Brand New Cadillac which is one of the two best versions (the other being the Clash).
The 1960's live !!!!!
But: is it live or playback in a studio? There are no amplifiers in sight, nor are there any leads connected to the guitar and bass!
I LOVE HEPSTARS
Mycket bra låt
It's a good thing I wasn't there cause I would've been jumping on that stage, how can I contain myself if they flip their hair like that!
kul att du la upp detta!!!!
Så jädra bra dom var
R.I.P Svenne Hedlund.

1965
I like how the guitarist looks at Benny sometimes like "wtf?"
R.I.P. Svenne
Can you upload an instrumental version please
Do you think they might have been listening to the Doors? :-)
+FWFWFWF This was the teenybopper version of the Doors.
+FWFWFWF Not if their first record came out in 1967 and this was in '65. Maybe Doors were listening to the Hep. Thank god they didn't see the hair flipping :)
...for the good times
Magic for ever
R.I.P 🙏
Very nice !
Ni får lyssna på en cover av denna låt gjorda i Chile i .....1966 (!!??)

Jajävlar va rom shejkar loss🤘
I approve of this song😂
Style over substance but the beat is good and the solo as well. Benny learned a lot until 1970, probably that helped with Abba.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Det var tråkigt
Hep stars that's Rockn roll
benny is so frickin cute in this
vERY NICE
This is the renegades song
