    This song always reminds me of this quote from "Beyond the Lighted Stage"...
    Jack Black : "Rush is just one of those bands that has a deep reservoir of rocket sauce. A lot of bands - they've only got so much in the bottle. They use it up sometimes in one song. These guys were the real deal. Their bottle was so big and so filled to the brim, they were shaking it literally for decades. And still there was sauce coming out."
    Like you said this song is different than what you would expect from them yet after a career of 40 years they are still creative and motivated enough to deliver this to their fans.

    I lost my mom and my brother - he's the one who introduced me to Rush - to cancer, so The Garden has always been very emotional for me; today, I was closing the sale on the house in which I've lived my entire life, and seeing this performance with the string ensemble has left me crying my eyes out. It's a beautifully moving tribute to three lives that have touched mine, that were taken far too soon. May they rest in peace, knowing that their gardens are being well looked after.

    Yep!
    If one was to write the last song on the last album of a career which has spanned 4 decades, this would be it!
    It's a beautiful piece and yes, it almost doesn't sound like Rush, but it's a perfect bow on the 40+ year gift.
    Justin,
    Thank you for sharing and taking us all on this wonderful ride.
    I hope you are fine after the hurricane.
    Take care (and don't be harsh)! 😉

    Geddy's emotional voices, Alex's piano piece and his solo are both so heartfelt.
    The strings add such a perfect touch.

    One of my favorite songs from them. My daughter (23) passed away in '22 from cancer. This song hits home and brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it. It's almost seems like Neil wrote it for her.

    What a beautiful simple song to close out their discography. A perfect FU to anyone who thinks Rush is just this or just that. That's what really elevates this album in the rankings. FYI, Alex plays the keys on Time Stand Still and Superconductor, too.

  • @justimprovising
    @justimprovising ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Alex wrote the piano part and demo'd it but for recording they got their friend Jason Sniderman to play it on a Steinway grand piano (Jason also played piano on the Presto album).

  • @DionysusAlS

    Such a transcendent piece of music, possibly their pièce de résistance. Any band would give anything to have something like that be their final song. The strings really put this song over the top, especially live. Goddamn, I'm actually proud to have worshipped this band most of my life. They enriched my existence beyond measure.

  • @michaelkeller6223
    @michaelkeller6223 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Alex’s solo sounds so emotively organic. It comes in just perfectly, the tone is amazing and the elasticity in the climax is sublime. You can hear the emotion in Geddy’s vocals too. The sparse piano? Chefs kiss and the lyrics are as good of a credo for a life as you could wish. Concert Graphics, string section, Neil’s restraint, blah blah blah, you get the idea.

    As you said, The Garden is unlike any song they've ever written. Tai Shan, too, is unlike any song they've ever written. The difference being that The Garden doesn't sound like it belongs in a Disney movie. It was something to hear this live with a string section. Extremely powerful.

I was so glad no one told you in the comments after the album listen that Alex wrote and plays the piano part for the live show! I wanted you to be surprised! I knew, the day I heard it for the first time, they were done. It is a beautiful song and the message was a great capstone to their career. Little did I think that there would only be be the Clockwork Angels and R40 tour, and that would be the end. From my first show seeing the Signals tour to the end I was lucky enough to see them 45+ times in 5 countries. Their music is the soundtrack of my life.

    It is the most gut-wrenching song for any parent and then for that parent to look at their own (hopefully good) upbringing and thinking of how their parents see their own child/children. I can't sing the song because i can't even listen to it withiut crying. I think of my children and of rhe mother i lost 19 years ago and of Neil's daughter, Olivia. I just get wrecked. Absolutely the most emotional song i have ever heard. Period.

    Have you gone back to your first reaction to this version? Very different reaction from you this time. I think going through their albums and now hearing this again probably helps you understand why we were all saying how impactful and emotional this was for us long time fans. It really is a very different song from them. And while it was not known at the time, I think this has to be one of the best ever final songs from any band.
    As for Alex on piano, Jason Sniderman who is a friend of Geddy played that on the album using a Steinway piano but it was based on something Alex composed. At least that is what I read. Nice to see Alex play it on stage though.

    OMG. That's the connection - taken as a whole, Grace Under Pressure was both an unexpected direction and has the "not Rush-like" Red Lenses... (and to a lesser extent Body Electric imo), and this is probably why it's another Grace Under Pressure for me... the atmospheric intros to BU2B and Angels, the return to "Wayward Son" style multiple parts in Caravan and Headlong... the ballad-ish Wreckers, and the simple slow Garden... For me, it's always going to be the next Grace Under Pressure...

    I don't know. I just don't know. I know I'm biased, but I just don't understand those that dislike this band and also feel bad for the millions that don't know them. I can honestly say I can't think of another band in history that compares (I'll give a nod to The Beatles just for the music they put out in such a short span, and the mark they left on the music world). But it's just so much more with Rush. I mean, special in every way

    Alex has been more than just the guitar player throughout the years. His Taurus pedal work usually goes unnoticed and to me, that is what makes him a top of the rung guitar player. That takes talent to achieve as a musician. His billboard rating in the top one hundred guitar players position is a joke!

    I don't actually really like the song, despite the obvious sentiment. Maybe I just don't like good bye's, but this song really feels forced (as does most modern Rush tunes, unfortunately) like "damn it, this emotional!". The set/lighting for this tune live was very memorable though.

      I'm so used to his cutting singing that he could do earlier that listening to this stage of his career is very difficult. His little swoops and meanders around the starts of some notes just grates on my ears like a swarm of mosquitoes. Musically, with a more limited range I don't think he's being as creative as he was before and that is what I sorely miss in his vocal melodies. When he sings the slower sections in some of his phrasing his voice is great, but when he goes through more difficult parts of phrases I'm out of the song and being too picky about his voice again. I think a more later stage Rush fan would not be as jarred by this as I am. Oh well. It wasn't a horrible song to me, but not a high point for me either.
