LYRICS:
I shall not bear the cross through yon city
When the burdens of life I lay down
When I knock on the portals of heaven
I will trade the old cross for a crown
Though the cross often times has been heavy
And all fortune on me begins to frown
But how happy I'll be over yonder
When I trade the old cross for a crown
And I will trade the old cross for a crown
When the burdens of life I lay down
When those pearly gates for me shall swing open
I will trade the old cross for a crown
Every cross that I bear for my Savior
Will at last one day when He calls me lay down
And all my sorrow will then be forgotten
And that's when I'll trade the old cross for a crown

I find myself going back to this video quite often. It is one of those "one more time" songs. This particular version gives my goosebumps goosebumps! I'm a big fan of Michael English..have followed him for many many years and my soul is touched every time I listen to his delivery of some of my favorite songs! So here I am in November of 2023 leaving yet another comment...6 yes ago 4 yes ago and now! Blessings! 😊
I love the Gaither Gospel singers. I could listen to them all the time.
I just love Mark, he has so much God given talent and he uses it for the Lord. These fellows are all good and they harmonize so well. I saw the Gaither Trio at the Tulsa Baptist Temple in Tulsa, OK with Bro. Clifford Clark. They were perfection, that has been many moons ago. I still love to hear them. Bill and Gloria are getting up in the years. Bill is 81 and Gloria is 76, I remember it like it was yesterday that I saw them. I’m 77 so it was years ago.
Such a powerful singer Michael English. What a voice.
What a glorious day that will be when I trade this old cross for a crown
Great song and performance
Reggie’s the man. Glad he finally got his due.
When did that happen?
Reggie Smith became an official member of the Gaither Vocal Band last year which makes this quartet a Vocal Band members quartet :)
Before David Phelps came, it was Reggie Smith who is the next in line when Jonathan Pierce left. Then Mark found David and brought to Bill right away. Hahahaha.
@@aimanisahac I never heard that and this makes me wonder 🤔, but anyway thanks for my answer to a longing question..haha.. I love it and I am satisfied with it. Thank you again. I am die-hard fan of the GVB for many years.
@@gtmalalo same!!! Because of GVB and particularly David Phelps, I got inspired on singing tenor. Worked my way up from Bass to Tenor (C5 Note).
Anyways, I saw it on a video.
Lol, it was during an interview with Mark Lowry while talking about how he found David Phelps. Before Jonathan Pierce left, they already had a list of amazing tenors and they were pointing on Reggie Smith at that time. And then Mark talked to Bill saying, "you know there's an amazing KID tenor who just move to Nashville"
and then Bill was like "tell him to come to studio to audition and bring some sample tapes".
and I guarantee Bill was amazed with David's heavenly talent. 😁😁😁
@@aimanisahac They were prepared on signing Smith when Jonathan Pierce left, he was already singing in the cruise with vocal band during that time but in the last minute, they found David Phelps. When Russ Taff left and they were searching for baritone, Smith was also considered cause he is versatile, when Michael English had a neck surgery, Smith/Marshall Hall was singing lead for them for months.
Imagine if this was a Gaither vocal band lineup
I always go back to this song every once in a while. Great arrangement
Ditto❤
Beautiful thanks guy's keep singing
THIS WAS TRULY ANOINTED AND I WANT TO THANK GOD FOR THE GREAT GOSPEL SINGERS ❤️👍🙏
💯💯💯
And, THAT is the way you do that right!!!!! No better harmonies anywhere than on this song
Yes 💯
That Reggie Smith should be featured more often!!
I believe he is now since becoming a member of the GVB. 😊

This an old Happy Goodman song
Some people say that Michaels voice I not as good as it used to be--WHAT?!!!
Watch the gum Michael English!
He always chews gum. Something about moisturizing his vocal chords or something
He always does ... 👍🥰
I wrote I'll Trade the Old Cross For a Crown on Easter of 1982. I had been diagnosed with HIV just a few days before.
