It's hearting to see that people are trying to conserve Matt's style. Just a damn shame that it came too late. The professionals are gone and cannot show their prowress. I was there then, and it was just amazing. Matt Mattox was a brilliant dancer and teacher. His choreography at the class level was more than challengening. Anyone who studied under him was blesses with inspiration. We all loved him. I knew him since I was a little girl. He is on of the very few who remain in my heart.

I don't want to be rude, but I'm truly curious about the gymnastics moves. I wasn't aware that was part of Matt Mattox's technique per se. Otherwise, it all makes sense in terms of my understanding of freestyle, which did include ballet as well as his famous isolations. If there is a connection to Horton technique as someone mentioned, that would make sense since Cole and Horton were contemporaries on the West Coast and they both shared similar inspirations. Thanks for sharing this and for keeping the technique alive.

      Interesting observation.
Are not most of the techniques codified in the early/mid 20th century not cut from the same cloth in essence?
      Graham, Horton, Cunningham & Mattox?
I can assure you, this is Matt Mattox based Isolation Technique (he called it Freestyle) as taught in the UK and worldwide since the days he codified it, based on the work of Jack Cole.
Horton’s work was wonderful of course. Yes they have similarities, but all can surly exist with love and mutual respect.

@Zak Nemorin not entirely. Horton working on the west coast, was brought to NYC by Alvin Ailey who then developed his company during the same time Jack Cole was codifying his jazz style. The Ailey company and therefore Horton technique was not nearly as famous as Jack Cole or jazz dance, especially during the early days of modern dance when very few people knew what it was outside Graham's work. The intention and execution of Horton technique is not the same as it is on jazz dance which is codified to be presentational versus modern which is about the process of the body as an instrument.

@@avisnubia Sure… But going back to your original comment, I can assure you that what you see in this video is in fact Matt Mattox based Isolation Technique, as taught by Matt himself and passed down to me via Jacki Mitchel (one of his main advocates (an American lady who worked extensively with him in the UK and Europe). She then passed down this lineage to me before she sadly passed away 6 or so years ago.
Anyway. Hope all is well and you are having the best of festive times.

@Zak Nemorin I don't disagree or deny the history of your expertise in Mattox's techniques, as a professor I teach both jazz and modern techniques emphasizing the similarities in the body, for dance students to understand. If you can, take a Horton class, and you'll see what I mean. I suggest taking one in person only to see how the instructor talks about the movement. There is no absolute in dance as it all comes from the same place, however, approaching the moves from different ideologies gives dancers a different perspective of the same movements. Yes? That was my point. Happy holidays to you and yours as well

      Hello.
I’m not entirely sure what your point is with this comment.
However, it is important to note that this video was filmed in and around the pandemic times when the government rules suggested all dance classes were taken with face masks.
I hope that answers your question?

Mucho nervio y mala técnica básica ¿Es que ya no se mete la tripa al bailar? Vais a durar poquito con esas cinturas tan sueltas.
