Eureka TCOP One man combat tent - best bug out tent shelter

  • My search for a one-man combat tent has ended. A while back I purchased the TCOP (Tent combat one person) bit.ly/43g3aos by Eureka in great shape and only missing stakes and a stake bag and have loved it since I opened the mail! The TCOP one-person combat tent is a tent that replaces the older ICS2000 (Improved Combat Shelter) that previously replaced the archaic shelter half. This one-man combat tent is big enough for two adults to fit comfortably into and is an absolute tank.

Three pole design with two large doors and vestibules is tough, sturdy, low profile, large enough for two, and is practically indestructible! With care, this tent will last us a LONG time.
The heavy-duty rain fly is reversible from woodland camouflage to desert sand and is a full blackout material. The tent has great ventilation, large storage areas, breathable fabric, tough floor material, and is easy to heat in the winter using my UCO candle lantern.
I have used this many times and it has been one of my favorite tents and really have no complaints other than not being able to keep the pole fastener velcro from leaking.
In my opinion, this is the best bug-out shelter for one person out there. Hands down. Bombproof.

RAIN FLY: Woodland Camo Fly is reversible, flame retardant, full coverage blackout material with taped seams - 2 vestibules - fly is reversible to Desert Tan (Digital Camo Fly not reversible) NETTING: All netting is 40D nylon “no-see-um” for protection from dust and small insects
FRAME: Easy shock-corded, cold weather, black anodized aluminum frame (.344” diameter)
REPAIR KIT: Including one pc. frame repair sleeve, needle, thread, thimble, one set of extra guy lines, 12’ cold weather shock cord with ‘shok locs’, 12”x12” swatches of all fabric and replacement toggles, buckles, tapes and web included with each tent.

It helps a little during that struggle. I've also found that a small loop of paracord tied at the end of the loop helps get a better hold when trying to put that fly pole in the grommets. Thanks for watching, monoXcide!

Great demos, and not just "saying" two people will fit, you proved it. I don't regret recently purchasing one of these. Definitely subscription worthy... just got mine after flip-flipped the rain fly so easily. Now that I've watched 'til the end.. You guys did a fantastic job. Clear, concise, no stumbles... it was like a toned down service training video for the civilian common man. Plus you didn't bang us over the head with "likes and subscribes". Your ending, on spot. Thanks guys.

Was looking for something like this and not in a bright color... without spending a fortune, that would aid my 3 yr old daughter and I in bug out situation....and fit gear.
Have had no luck till somehow I stumbled upon this video.
    This should suit us fine!
I live in the Northern woods of Vermont and the last thing I want to do is get stuck in the rain or get bit by a venomous spider or tick...
I also don't want to have to heft around something really heavy that might be unpredictable on the move....especially with a small child.
I found really good "unbreakable" steal stakes on Amazon 12in long...8 for $16....and supposedly rust proof.....so will purchase those....came with fantastic reviews.
    Thank you very much!!
And thank you for your service! ❤
My family is military, mostly airforce, but we've got 2 Marines and one army in the bag.😊
    God bless you all🙏

Perhaps the most thorough and well-produced review on this tent ever created!!!
Total Jarhead, but still excellent. The civilian version of this tent has been around for over 10 years, lacks the blackout feature, and is a bit less robust, but is still a good buy. I will consider this version for my around the globe motorcycle adventure due to its more rugged nature. Thanks. As a first time viewer of your channel I will definitely be on the lookout for more.

I looked @ the Molle 2 and the ILBE but the FILBE system is much more functional as well as more current. Thx for you guys help. -LB

By far my favorite pack system!

Professional review: well done both. Two suggestions: make a *shorter* ground cloth out of tougher material, with the corner tapes (with hole for the pole end) extended to reach out to the correct size. That way, when it rains it won't be pooling on the waterproof ground cloth. The wear and tear is greater away from the edges, so you lose little there, and being smaller it is lighter, meaning that you can use a heavier weight material to give better resistance to spikes.
If you then add to that tapes from the ground sheet corners to where the pole in the fly sheet hit the ground, you can (a) make the hooch shelter completely free-standing when the ground won't take a stake, and (b) you can set it up the complete tent fly sheet first, for when it is raining hard.

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey thanks for the tips, sujiut! A well-made ground cloth can make a huge difference with these tents and flys.

I have had mine for about 3 years and bought a back up because they are hard to find. I will buy a tcop just for the rain fly to use on my down range solo so when i'm away from spike camp my shelter is easier to conceal on extended hunts away from camp.

This is the most indepth vid on the tcop. Bought mine on sale at Colemans military surplus over a year ago for $185. new in the box. Never issued. I love it. They often run sales on this model when they have them in stock. Almost always have a 15% off code available anyway. Great tip on leaving the door open for the fly. When new it is EXTREMELY STIFF. So much so I called the company, was afraid I'd break it. Not to worry. Just work slowly. Wish I'd had your tip then. Will still keep the doors open even now! Thanks a lot. I have to agree with your opinion of this tent. I love it. Found a white paper on this tent about a reserve unit that while deployed the unit was struck by severe thunderstorm (tornado warning). The only things left standing were their TCOP's and all their gear inside stayed protected and dry.
I was lucky and acquired a new unissued tent from a surplus sale and was so impressed that I bought a second one.
Also good idea about unzipping the doors on the fly. It is real difficult to get the second tip of the pole into the grommet with them zipped.

Mr. Roberts if you're out there, the Eureka Solitaire tent footprint does indeed fit right under the tent. The tent overhangs the footprint by 5" so rain won't infiltrate from off the rain fly, all areas of traffic in the tent being covered by the footprint beneath. So there's my report back. P.S. The corners have a cord with and adjuster to snug it up under the tent. Again, thanks for the fine video on this fine tent.

@@robertsbushcraft I came up with my own unique way of setting up the tent fly... Its always been a hassle for me using "sleeves" for poles, I prefer hooks.. Makes a big difference, especially when its raining, and youre getting wet while assembling the tent... Unfortunately, thats my one complaint with this, the main body of the tent uses hooks for the poles, but the rain fly(arguably the second most important PART of a camping tent) uses a SLEEVE for the rain fly... So ive come up with my own unique method... I basically ended up KEEPING the pole INSIDE the sleeve, and what I do is disassemble the pole while its still inside, then I roll it up when I roll up the main body.. So when I assemble the pole, its already INSIDE the sleeves, and I just line up the joints... Takes me about 2-4 mins compared to a full 10 mins struggling to slide the pole inside, and worse after it gets wet!! Everyone might not be comfortable with this method, but ive made it my own!!

The tent looks very sturdy. However, with the rainfly on, and the doors zipped closed, without vents there would be little, if any, airflow to refresh the interior air. Would likely be uncomfortably warm and stuffy. Also, the interior would be very dark, even during daylight-- wouldn't know it's morning as the sun came up.

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

It is designed to keep light from escaping during the night and preventing light from entering in during the day. It's military issue and sometimes a sleep shift falls during the day. The fly doesn't go all the way to the ground and there is a decent amount of ventilation in my opinion.

I had these visions of heating a tent with a UCO lantern. Sounded too good to be true, so I did a little research.
The UCO lantern claims 1900 BTU. But if you Google heat output of a candle, they say 200 to 400 BTU/hour.
Aha! UCO then is saying 220 btu/hour = 1900 btu over the 9 hours the candle burns. I am not saying the
candle can't be useful, but this rating by UCO, while technically correct, is deceptive.
For instance, a typical propane cook stove burner is about 8,000 to 11,000 btu/hour. Each of those
little flames is same as a candle. Do the math.
Actually, per pound of wax, a candle is competitive with propane/diesel etc.
I am determined to be at 70F in a TCOP or a 2-man Combat tent, when its -20F outside. The quest goes on.

Just about any tent is going to be miserable in that kind of heat. That said, it depends on how you set the tent up in regards to the ocean breeze. The wind is your friend! The sun will heat that tent up under the rain fly and get hot fast, but, the wind will blow through and help with that as long as you have the rain fly doors open and the system set to help funnel the wind through.

Does the UCO need the chain? I lost the chain on mine. Would hanging it without the chain bring it too close to the tent and melt it? Have you had any issues with the candle getting the tent hot or melting?

I purchased a Eureka TCOP from a surplus store. Where can I get replacement poles? Where can I get the replacement stakes at (stakes without the heads)? Do you know where I can get a bag for the tent posts? Did you build the lanyards for wind config yourself? Hoorah! Very good video. Also, I don't have an original tent bag. I got a USMC 2 man ten bag with this tent. Where can you get an original TCOP tent bag? How do you fold the TCOP to stow away? The UCO candle lantern was great. Do you worry about carbon dioxide poisoning within the tent while the lantern is lit? Where did you get your UCO lantern?

Ebay is going to be your best friend with this! Here are some of the items:
TCOP Main bag and repair items: ebay.to/2MmywD0
      TCOP Stakes and bag: ebay.to/33gVx15
      TCOP replacement poles: ebay.to/35j4w3m
      TCOP repair kit bag: ebay.to/2OB5SR4
      UCO Candle Lantern: amzn.to/2N5xkUg
I used paracord for the guy-out lines that are 25' lengths. I do not worry about the buildup of carbon monoxide fumes while using the UCO candle lantern because there is adequate ventilation. The rainfly does not come in touch with the ground so there is a gap all the way around the tent at the bottom that allows fresh air in.
Thanks for the questions and good luck with your tent, Mike!

This is the only in-depth review that shows how to set up the tent step by step in detail. Thanks for that. The first time I put it up I quit halfway through. But I have a question: Can I use the rainfly without the 3rd pole? I just want to use 2 poles for the tent body only. I have no need for vestibules. I like the fabric of the rainfly to be directly touching the tent body. I bought my TCOP on eBay for $140, the seller had 17 and claimed they had only been used once in a training session, then put away and never used again. It was in like new condition. Only the stakes were missing.

You're welcome Stephen, thank you for watching! Yes, you can use the rain fly without the 3rd pole as long as you are under no snow load, I'd suggest 3 seasons only (unless you live somewhere where snow is a non-issue) because that third pole does add strength to the system. The rain fly will drape over the tent and its material will come in contact with the tent body just as you mentioned, in my configurations I have discovered that in doing so the moisture/condensation buildup increases significantly due to reduced air flow. This can be offset some with something like the UCO candle lantern. I sometimes will leave the rain fly at home and just use my Aquaquest Defender tarp as drapery over the tent body using my walking stick to create an awning in the front and tie out the back side and corners. Works great!

@@robertsbushcraft I live near the beach in Oregon, in a small town I won't name. Lots of woods, most is state owned forestland, you can camp there with a permit. Snow isn't a big issue here but rain is, being near the Pacific is why. I assume I can just use the velcro straps to secure the fly to the tent if I'm not going to use the 3rd pole. Thanks for replying!

@@AnonVendetta that is correct about the velcro and I'd guy it out at least at the corners. Post a video of your setup one day if it suits you, good luck to you on this! EDIT: If rain is a big issue I'd suggest carrying that 3rd pole in case you have to have it .

@@robertsbushcraft I have a few questions about some of the other items shown in this video. I am considering the USMC FILBE main pack. But I noticed it doesn't come with straps.....a backpack isn't very useful without straps, obviously. It looks like they are usually sold separately. On Ebay I can find a new FILBE main pack for around $150, and slightly used straps for $25 to $30. Sounds like a good deal. I will not go with used gear when it comes to the main pack, I've had too much bad luck with used products in the past.
Can the straps and waist buckle be attached to the pack without the frame? A frame adds even more weight which I prefer not to have to lug around all the time. I've also noticed there is a combat pack which can be attached to the main pack, but I don't think I'll need it. I'm just looking for a replacement for my aging but totally usable 5.11 Rush 72, main issue with that is it just doesnt have enough room for everything I need to carry. Some small rips here and there, no problem to sew them up but they arent bad.
Can the USMC logo be easily removed from the pack without damaging the bag? I don't think it is okay for a civilian to be wearing official military gear, if they have never been in the service. I did not serve (applied but denied early in the process), I just think that military gear is usually of much higher quality than commercial equivalents.
I also prefer to strap the tent to the bottom of the pack instead of placing it in the pack, does the main pack have something on the bottom that will permit a tent to be easily attached there?
I like your sleeping bag, especially the waterproof carry sack. I've have a commercial Marmot bag which rolls up to slightly bigger than a football if compressed tightly enough. Is your sleeping bag's stuff sack available separately? It looks like it is listed in the video description USMC MAC sack waterproof bag. Is that the right item?
Can you post a link to a groundsheet that is sold separately? My TCOP came with a repair kit and no stakes, and no ground sheet. It was listed by the Ebay seller with a description along the lines of "used once for a training session, then put away away and never used again". I havent had any leaking issues with the tape, it was practically new from what I could tell.
      Thanks!

@@AnonVendetta I agree with you on buying new FILBE gear 100%. We got lucky with our FILBE packs buying them locally in used but like new condition. I purchased mine for $100 and later Gabriel bought his for $80. If you use Facebook try the Facebook marketplace, that's where we found ours.
I do not see an easy way to attach the straps and waist belt to the FILBE main pack without the frame. I'm sure that with some paracord and little imagination you could rig something up, but, the frame is lightweight and in my opinion a necessary component in this system. Not only does it support the pack but it keeps the pack off of your back and that alone allows a great amount of airflow between you and the pack to dry away sweat. There is also enough room there between the pack and my back for me to store an additional firearm, hatchet, and so on. If you are after this pack I do suggest getting the frame. Try it with and without. If you're happy without the frame you could always list it on eBay.
The 3 Day Assault Pack is a favorite of mine. Is it the most comfortable pack ever? No, it's not, but, it is comfortable enough for me to haul around mile after mile on our treks. As with any gear you'll need to hit the trail to see what you need to adjust, find out the quirks, and work out the kinks. For instance, I have trouble from time to time with the 3-day pack pinching the skin on my lower back between the bottom of the plastic back stiffener (inside of the pack) and my leather belt. There's just a little gap there large enough to pinch ever so often. The easy workaround is to make sure my garments aren't sliding down, I just pull them back up. This system was designed to be worn at times over body armor and I had to keep that in mind when trying these out. Rarely have I carried both the main pack and assault pack on the same trip. Typically I use the 3-day pack during late spring, summer and early fall seasons as my load and need for heavier sleeping gear are lighter. The colder months I bring the main pack alone.
The USMC logo that I believe you are referring to is secured to the pack by hook and loop tape (Velcro) that I added. Typically that strip of tape is used for name tape. I think it's ok to wear and use the gear and BDUs as long as you do not misrepresent yourself. The dress uniforms are another story altogether! Wearing those makes a statement that you are serving or have retired from the military. Stolen valor is a big deal. I agree with you on the quality of the gear as most of it is designed with heavy-duty military service in mind, I tend to stay away from civilian packs and such for that reason.
The bottom of the pack does have two compression straps that will allow you to attach a tent. In the video, I have my sleeping mat attached with those very straps. If you look around the 1:03 mark in the video you can see that I have mat attached above a row of MOLLE webbing. If you pull the strap out of that MOLLE you can attach a mat, tent, etc., and more on the outside and bottom of the pack. Depending on where we are going I sometimes fold my TCOP in separate pieces and stuff them down inside of the sleeping compartment with my sleeping bag. Briars and such snags can wreak havoc on tents and mats outside of the bag's protection.
There are two types of compression bags in the video. One is the MAC (ebay.to/2X7xoLK) and that is the green one that is a general purpose waterproof bag that fits neatly into the sustainment (and hydration) pouches that I have attached on the outside of my main pack. The other compression sack is the brown SealLine Waterproof 3 Season Sleep System Compression Sack (ebay.to/2KDCgkW). That one is designed for the USMC 3 Season bag and bivy. Prices are all over the place on that one.
The groundsheet that I am using in the video is a piece that came with Gabriel's ICS 2000 tent and is not an original piece of kit for the TCOP. Best bet on that is to try and make one or keep an eye peeled on eBay for one. They shouldn't be hard to make at all. In fact, I may use a material that is 1.9oz ripstop with DWR coating much like this one: ebay.to/2IJdYUo to create one for my TCOP.

When that Uco candle is lit, how much light spills out from the tent?
What kint of beeswax candle do you use and how ling do they last as in how many would you burn through per night?

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The light coming from the candle is hidden from a distance to outside eyes due to the blackout nature of the rain fly and bath tub floor. That said, when you stand next to the tent at night you can see a small trace of light. What we've done is cut down a drink can to make a cover that fits around the glass chimney of the lantern. This blocks all light except at the top of the lantern.

For the Eureka TCOP, I want to shorten one pole for use in the rain fly. A slightly shorter pole would make inserting it into the rain fly much easier. Do you think removing 2 centimeters would be okay?

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Personally, I'd leave the pole at its manufactured length. The real trick to getting the pole set in the rain fly is to increase the arch of the pole. I like to put one pole tip in the ground and push the other end to form an arch, imagine this process to look similar to pole vaulting. As the arch forms, you can slide the rain fly down the pole. The more you increase the arch the easier it is to set the pole tip into the grommet.
