Thanks for sharing with us Joe and Melissa, what a great video with lots of different coverage and good times with the new Calf. He is learning and hopefully he will be tame without an ornery streak . You all stay safe and have a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Fred.
I believe that calf was tryna avoid that ice when you were leading him lol. He's beautiful 😊😊😊. Hoping Melissa's mama is feeling better🙏🙏🙏..tyfs God bless you
Get those ice cleats, u mentioned. You’re too valuable to the operation to go down. Wishing u and Melisa a very happy holidays. Best wishes for her mom
Weather about the same down here in the Twin Cities. We always enjoy your videos Joe. Happy New Year and wishing you and Melissa all the best this coming year.
“Wolves Also known as timber wolves, these apex predators are federally listed as threatened or endangered in Minnesota. They are primarily wild prey eaters, but may occasionally kill or injure domestic animals. Wolves are highly adaptable and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems.”
Hey Joe , Kerry from N.Dakota we’ve had more rain than snow so far , I tell ya I bought a skid steer last fall no snow , what happened to winter the last few years. Next week forecast is -20 -30 , we’ve been spoiled with the weather. Happy Holidays . All this ice is horrible especially for the animals.
Joe you're doing a really good job with the new calf give her a little bit of lead but let her know that you're always in charge. Definitely going to need to rotate the hay bale feeding in your lot so you don't get too much manure and too much dirt.
Hello from West Fargo. We are the same fog here in the Fargo area and they had to actually cancel all incoming flights to Hector International Airport due to such low visibility. The funny thing is the roads were frozen
Our weather here in Michigan was just about the same as yours. Our temps got up to 51° and then upper 40°s and all our snow melted and then rain for 2 1/2 days, foggy and...really windy. I'm begging for snow. Everything here right now is MUD. You'll have a whole bunch of fertilizer come spring with all of that cow.poop. Happy New Year!!
Love the videos. I am confused. You always GAS in the tractor but it is diesel. I love that old tractor. Is the cost difference between logs and already cut, that much to be not worth it? I know it would be higher, but is it that much, considering you can cut it?
The Farmall M runs on gas, not diesel. If I were to buy logs already cut and split, the price would be 4 times higher. 3 times higher if I found the very best deal. If it was cheaper, maybe twice the cost, I would consider it. Lol. Thank you for the nice comment.
I have a heater in the trough, it never freezes unless the cows pull it out which they have done twice. It gets so cold up here that the whole trough would freeze solid and since it would be months before we go above freezing the ball would just be frozen halfway in the ice. Lol. Your idea would work in the fall and spring though when we are above freezing during the day but go below overnights.
The one thing I hate is freezing rain and ice. I have a pair of those ice cleats for your shoes and they work great. Is that new chimney setup on the boiler working like you hoped?
HAPPY NEW YEAR, JOE, You need to get yourself a belated Christmas Gift. A new 4 wheel drive tractor with a heated and cooled cab. Then for a new years Gift a new 4 wheeler with the same. You have way more use for both now with the cows. Time to put the Green Acres tractor out to pasture. Not getting any younger.
I have my sea legs here in S.FL., you have your ice legs. I need to develop my ice legs because we are looking to move to New Hampshire within the year.
I don't know if its still there but, there was a buffalo meat farm north of Scranton Pa. We drove by it every day during the winter to get to a job. It was on top of a mountain so it snowed a lot. The farmer put the round bails out on their side and the buffalo stood there all day their heads in the bail eating while they got covered in snow. It looked like they ate it from the center out so the hay protected itself from the weather.
Hey Joe perfect timing on the video wish you and Melissa a Happy New Year I do have one question about the wood boiler can you also blend it with Chestnut Cole.??
The laws of physics also apply to your stove. If you had an insulated water tank as a heat storage and fired it with completely dry, split wood, you would be able to run it in short intervals with clean combustion. That would probably save a third of your firewood.
Before you comment, look up that stove and see the specs. Learn how they work. Also, learn how dry the wood we have is. What you commented is simply a google search.
To help your pile stay contained take three gates say 10’ long and fasten together in a u shape it will make a easy non permanent bin plus easier to tarp
Buy a bag of alfalfa pellets for horses. That calf will be very food oriented. I used to train all my 4H steers with them. As your leading him around give him one when follows you. Wont be long and you wont need the halter.
Perhaps I’m just ignorant on the matter (I live in a large city), but what is the point in spending thousands of dollars on wood to heat this? I’m a Covid subscriber but I missed a lot between then and now, I guess.
@@nicholaskocik2302 I get that but how is it cost efficient? He’s spending thousands and thousands of dollars per winter? The math doesn’t make sense to me. Again, I live in a city so perhaps I’m not understanding this.
I have done many videos explaining this. We were paying about 3,000 dollars a year to heat just the house with fuel oil. The electric water heater in the house costs a lot to run also. With the wood boiler, we spend around 2,800 dollars a year buying 2 semi loads of wood which is what we burn for the 7 months of winter. The difference is, that 2800.00 heats the house, the workshop building and the guesthouse and all the hot water in the house. In short, we could not afford to live here without the wood boiler and life the lifestyle we live. Having the workshop building heated and the guesthouse heated would have been way too expensive for us to afford. You can argue that the cost of putting in the wood boiler system would have paid for years of fuel oil and propane to heat the house and the other buildings and this is true BUT. That is throwing money away because when we do sell this place, to the right buyer, this will be a huge selling point and we will get most of the install money back. It was like putting the money in the bank vs into fuel. Just to be clear, Melissa and I could live a totally different life and not heat the other buildings, not have a milk cow, not have a workshop etc. but that would be boring and for us to have the life we live, living in this extreme climate, this was the cheapest route.
It’s been a weird winter so far. We live in South Dakota had three days of fog. Been raining here today all day. Suppose to get cold after the new year. We normally have snow by now and have used the snow blower a few times. You are going to have an ice rink at your place.
Because I get this question (the dog part) over and over again, I made sure to film the dogs (all 3 of them) in THIS video. Chickens are fine, go back and watch the video if you want to see how the dogs are doing.
Happy New Year Joe & Melissa. I notice that whenever you open the boiler, you stand back for a bit. I'm sure there is a good reason for this, but I don't know what it is. Have you ever had an incident while opening that door?
Hey Joe, always enjoy your videos, just one thing I wanted to mention, the drink Melissa is making is Kefir and is pronounced KUH-FEAR, not KEY-FUR. Not trying to be a smart ass, just figured you would want to know. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Joe and Melissa, thanks for another year or sharing your experiences with us.
another great video Joe, thanks for your tireless dedication!

Watching you face off with the calf in a battle of determination is what I needed today. :)
First rime I have seen Festus come the whole way into the workshop Wow, he is getting big
He really has grown. He is very curious as well.
It was good seeing all the pups again! Walk like a penguin Joe!
When I saw the mess around the hay ring, it reminded me of a song by Jim Stafford..."Cow Patti". Always made me smile.
South Arkansas here, praying for Melissa and her family

Good to see the calf so happy!
Happy new year Joe and Melissa. ❤
Best wishes for a wonderful New Year at the NorthernSeclusion Farm 💕
Really enjoyed watching 👍👍
Happy New Year to you and Melissa
Happy New Year to you and yours Joe 🎉
34 minutes in while you are out with the calf, I can hear wolves howling in the distance. Kind of creepy/cool with the foggy setting.
Wolves or coyotes?
@ wolves. Coyotes do not sound like that.
“Wolves

If you are just eventually going to kill the calf why halter train it?
looks like tbe little guy is starting to feel better
Happy New Year from Canada!
Happy New Year and all the best and health 😊😊🎉
Joe, you need ice cleets for on your shoes. ❤

Here we are over 3500 miles away and can't wait for a new video..our favourite channel...😊
Rubber slip ons with the short spikes attach to your outdoor shoes work terrific for that ice. They sell them many hardware stores n home stores.
when Joe is feeding the calf is it wolves i hear howling?
Have a Happy New Year stay safe and warm.
Happy New year Joe and Mellisa.🤩👍👍
Hello from West Fargo.

The funny thing is the roads were frozen
I saw that on the news. My Brother Chris and his wife Teresa live in Moorehead so I watch that forecast also.
Awesome video
And all residents of Cloquet performed their best penguin walk for the rest of the winter.
About a 3rd of Minnesota. Lol.
@@NorthernSeclusion At least you got a little sun today. It was very dreary (and now freezing) in The Cities.
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
🥳 Happy New Years 🎉
Super foggy this evening 70° with a feels like 76° with 100% humidity
70 degrees? You suck. Lol. 27.5 here and foggy.
New project, now you need to build a hockey rink since you have all the ice now
you know it would be awesome....
For the ice try some ashes from the furnace. Works great but dirty.
Happy New Year!
Definitely heard wolves howling when you were feeding the calf around 34:10 🤔
feisty little thing
Adorable calf
Happy New Year.
The key to halter training calves, force them to walk in tight circles left and right...that's it, many years of 4H.

34 nice. Haha, I'm in Atlanta and 65 is nice
Can you build a bigger corral for the calf in front of the chicken coop?

You should start looking for a manure spreader you are correct there is going to be a lot of!!
Thank you for all of the videos in 2024. Happy new year everyone, stay safe.🍻🍻🎆🎆🎇🎇✨✨
FYI watch the cows on ice they can break their pelvis doing the split.
Put a ball in the water bucket one that t light wind will move around and the water won't freeze.its worth trying

Great job you two with the calf !!! That calf looks healthy and happy!!! Good bye 2024!!!
Happy New Year 🎉

Was that wolves howling when you were feeding the calf? @34:40
Yes, they were quite vocal that morning for probably an hour.
Joe, you might need to start wearing your ice cleats trying to walk that calf around with that ice
That calf is going to be the channel's mascot 😊.
Hes going to be eaten......🙄

I think you’d find the TH-cam channel Gierok Farms interesting to watch if you don’t already. They’re a small dairy farm in Wisconsin.
Also, living traditions homestead is enjoyable!
Hey Joe perfect timing on the video wish you and Melissa a Happy New Year I do have one question about the wood boiler can you also blend it with Chestnut Cole.??
Get the bottle and he will follow you on the lead.
Your diesel heater do you have a 12 vote power supply for it ac
Yes I do. I can run it on a car battery or I plug in my ac to dc power inverter to grid power and that runs it.
Just don’t break a hip Joe be careful
Happy New Year to all
You should put scattered the stove ashes on your garden.
Joe I need to ask are you running a longer bar on the chain saw you used in this video? For some reason I thought it was shorter when you got the saw.
Joe. Why didn’t you put that light and pole closer to the boiler door so you can see what the hell you’re doing
Hey I got to see the garbage can go down the driveway. Sooo happy about that.

A set of clamp on ice spikes works too
Has the boiler ever flashed over when you opened it? I notice you give it plenty of time to oxygenate.
You get 3 days of work done in one day!!! You must be tuff as nails!!

My understanding is it was the most economical way to heat vs. oil. Not only does it heat the main house, it heats the out buildings also.

I seen a farmer flip the bail over with the forks on the floor and then pick it up before putting it in the feeder.
It's worth a try.
After you milk MESSA out for the last time make sure to get stuff from the vet to dry treat her to help prevent her from getting mastitis….
Would like to see more of the calf if possible, thank you !

Don't give your cow sweet stuff in her grains and the calf won't get sick, their guts get full of inflammation. It's not a natural food for them
Water on ice is the worst!!! Busted my ass last week
Do you hear wolves often?
Sread massive amounts of chat on your driveway appropriately and enjoy...
Snow removal guys can easily spread salt for your driveway area. Not too spendy either.
time to start pail feeding the calf
