  • After two years of on track testing and street riding, this review of the Metzeler Sportec M7RR tyres is long overdue.
    Fitted to some California Superbike School coach bikes in Australia, these tyres have been tested under some of the most extreme bitumen riding conditions you can imagine. With between 1,000 to 1,500 laps under his belt riding these tyres on Australian racetracks in the past two years as a CSS coach, your host is able to talk about the performance of these tyres with considerable confidence. Add that to his experience riding these on weekends in the twisties of northern australia, and you've got a fairly solid base on which to make judgements about the overall performance of the Metzeler M7RR tyres.

      The Bike Stig I watched your M9RR review after watching commented here haha. As you no doubt know, it rains a LOT here in Scotland. Worse for me as I’m west coast facing the Atlantic. What tyres would you say perform the best in the rain?
      Are the M9RR the successor of the M7RR or just a racier option?

    • @TheBikeStig

      @@Invis_Space I really want to visit that place, one day I'll visit you my friend. The M9RR pretty much replaces the M7RRs. They offer all of the same benefits but are just so much better. The big plus of those is the wet and cold weather performance. In fact much of the marketing from Metzeler was filmed at the Isle of Man in the wet coincidentally.

      I just remembered, I am almost done with an update video on the M9RRs and their wet / cold performance, mileage and the air pressures I found most useful. It will pretty much say get a set :-)

      The Bike Stig ah that’s exactly what I wanted to hear! So M9RRs it is! Looking forward to your video update 🙏🏻
      I hope you do and if you do, we’ve got a large family home you are welcome to crash at while you visit and we’ve got plenty of bikes you’re familiar with to borrow. The catch? Riding tips of course! 😂

    These tyres were designed for the isle of man TT so if you are from the UK and push hard on the B roads these tyres will never let you down. They get super sticky(for what they are) and will allow you to push as hard as you need on heavy road sessions. Honestly I have no idea what the roads are like in aus but the world knows the UK is the home of street racing so take that as you will.

    • @TheBikeStig

      makes a ton of sense to me Andy, we get wet roads where I am but not wth the low temperatures like you get over there. That said, I really am impressed with how good the new M9RRs are in the wet and noticed that Metzeler used footage from the Isle of Man on wet roads.

    Just bought a pair for my BMW F800 R. Previous Michelin Road 5 had done 9,000 miles and were starting to feel flattened although didn’t look it. Only rode 40 miles back home taking care to scrub but also push and even though it was damp and light rain, they feel great and hold a line much better than the admittedly worn R5’s. They were about £90 cheaper for the pair than the newer M9’s.

    I'm not that experienced on a motorcycle. I used to do motocross when I was younger and then within the last 3 years I have been on and off road bikes. I'm currently riding a Duke 390, so not exactly a high performance machine but it is fun nevertheless. It has Metzeler M5's on it and I am wondering what to get when they wear out. The M7RR looks like a good option but also looking at the Michelin Road 6, Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3 and Continental Road Attack 4. Any thoughts comparing between these 4 tyres? I want good longevity out of the tyre since I commute on it daily but I want a good sticky edge that will give me confidence in the corners when I go out on the windy roads on the weekends.

    • @TheBikeStig
      @TheBikeStig  ปีที่แล้ว

      All of those tyres are good, they all perform well and each have their own pros. Personally, I am a Metzeler fan and would not hesitate to get a set of M9RRs, if I couldn't get those probably the Pirellis, that's my thoughts mate.

  • @colbyrodgers863
    @colbyrodgers863 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm buying these tyres right now because of this video. But I am curious as to whether or not this would be a decent sport touring compromise? I love this tyre but I'm not very knowledgeable yet. First bike and all. I considered the contiroad sport touring until I found these. But somewhere I've picked up this idea of needing a sport touring tyre as a beginner and I don't personally know any other riders so I can't ask anyone other than my fav TH-cam people

    • @TheBikeStig
      @TheBikeStig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't go too far wrong with these tyres, they perform exceptionally well and you do get decent mileage for a sports tyre. Now if you are going to do a lot of touring and more bike upright kind of riding, then these might be a bit of overkill and you'd be better off going to a touring tyre like the Metzeler Roadtec which is designed for that. Truth is they all perform very well these days.

    What pressure do you run on the track? I'm doing a track day in a fortnight on my mt10 with m7rr's on

    • @TheBikeStig
      @TheBikeStig  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've tested a bunch of different pressures and found best result at 32psi front cold, and 26psi rear cold. I actually run that setting on the local ranges as well and it's perfect on the S1RR

    • @vmv-9680
      @vmv-9680 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see you answer for pressure for track how about your recommendation for street pressure. Manual says 42 psi rear and 36 front. I’m a bigger guy and it just feels like the bike is just sitting on top of the road not fully connected at the manuals suggested psi.

    • @darkknight17
      @darkknight17 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vmv-9680 you do realise it's relative to a number of variables such as your body weight and suspensions set up?
      Try 34 front, 38 rear. See how that feels. Then adjust by +/- 1 psi increments each full day of riding.
      Personally I ride 34 front and 38 rear. It gives better grip, but turns slower.

  • @daniluping7247
    @daniluping7247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What pressure you used on streets and tracks?
    Thank's

    • @TheBikeStig
      @TheBikeStig  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pressure will always depend on a number of factors - type of tyre, how you ride etc. On the street with Metzeler M7s and M9s I've settled on 30psi front cold and 24psi rear cold but keep in mind most of my riding is on the ranges and none of it is commuting. For commuting you don't want to wear a flat strip in the centre so use factory recommendations for the bike which is a fair bit higher than what I've said here. On the track I run race tyres and for Metzeler's run 32psi front cold (and set it at 35psi hot), on the rear 24psi cold (and set it at 27psi hot). I use those same pressures on Pirelli on the track too.

      yeah I saw that, I have a set coming to do a test on my road bike, and also on track with the school. I like what I've read about the specs and would expect them to perform really well. The delay here is getting my hands on a 200 wide version for the rear which hasn't landed in Australia just yet.

    What would you recomend: pirelli diablo rosso corsa 2 or these? 80% city in all weather and temperature conditions and 20% track. And when you gonna try new m9rr? Its couple months remains for a new moto season, so I'm kinda confused about new set.

    • @TheKez1a
      @TheKez1a 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These would last longer though in terms of outright grip the Corsa 2's are far more confidence inspiring, I'd take a look at the S22 from Bridgestone - cheaper then both, near grip to the Corsa 2 and better feel then the M7RR (in my opinion).

    • @TheBikeStig
      @TheBikeStig  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obviously I like the M7RRs, haven't done as many miles on the Rosso Corsas as these but I did find during testing on an MVF4 they felt like they din't hold edge temperature as good as the M7RRs on street rides. Had a few close calls on the Corsas. I have never tested the Corsas on the track, only the M7s. In my street riding I felt the Metzelers were better in the wet than the Pirellis and the S22 Bridgestones (which I tested on the S1RR and do like the performance of). A lot of personal preferences come into play in choosing here and . The one thing I can't comment on is mileage as I've never compared tyre mileage.

    M7rr en 120 av et 190 ar monté sur s1000rr, tester sur route, longévité bien supérieure au Pirelli diablo rosso 3, 3000 à 3500 km pour les m7rr contre 2500 km pour les rosso.
    J'ai aussi testé les dunlop s22r qui ont un meilleur grip que les 2 cité ci dessus mais bien sur au détriment de la longévité 2000 km.
    En résumé je n'ai pas trop aimé le m7rr car il manque de grip comparé au s22r qui sont pourtant dans la même catégorie, manque de grip également pour le rosso 3.
    Test des 3 marques à la même période de l'année et avec les mêmes pressions 2.5 av et 2.9 ar, meme en baissant la pression sur l'arrière a 2.5 sur le m7rr le grip n'est pas vraiment meilleur.
