E. Coli Linked To Killer Sandwiches | EXPERT Explains All

- An E. Coli outbreak thought to have originated in sandwiches sold in various retail outlets, including supermarkets has claimed a life, with several others seriously ill in hospital.
Virologist Dr Chris Smith explains to Talk's Mike Graham that it is now known the bacteria came from lettuce leaves used in the sandwiches.
Mike questions if the locations where sandwiches are made for distribution will have to look at their hygiene processes. He says: "It's a good lesson, to wash your vegetables no matter how clean you think they are."

I work twelve hour shifts ( ironically in end of life care ) . Often too tired to cook food to take in for my lunch break . Fairly regularly rely on meal deals , not good I know , but seriously tired working . Two weeks ago I had to go off sick for four days . I rarely go off sick . Had eaten a chicken salad sandwich several hours before !? Maybe coincidence but makes me wonder.
It shows all the supermarkets get their produce from the same people 🤨

My dad grew lettuce and many other veg using cow manure as fertiliser. We kids used to rip of leaves while the lettuce cabbage and spring onions were still in the ground and chew on them. Nobody got seriously ill. Im wondering if I'm immune to e-coli.
Maybe your Dad's cow manure was well rotted before he applied it to the soil. The high temperature achieved whilst the stuff is piled up on farms might kill the bacteria? Perhaps it's fresh manure that is the problem.

You cannot completely control the sandwich making process. The ingredients such as lettuce will have gone through vigorous stringent cleansing processes but eventually arrive at the sandwich construction part. This is where, in this case, the lettuce and other products are handled by production workers onto the bread, not unlike burger outlets. The weak link in the whole process is here. If the production workers personal hygiene is suspect, this can cause a problem. Although workers passing into the high care area generally are scrutinised; spot check inspections can highlight those less vigorous in their handwashing. Those that fail these spot checks lose their jobs.

Surely from day 1 they knew the kind of product that was involved? Personally I don’t buy salad sandwiches for precisely this reason! Oh and why talk to a virologist about a bacterium?

Hmm something wrong here. Cow poo is not allowed as fertiliser. Since fertiliser used to be from Ukraine, DEFRA still said farmers weren't allowed to use their own cow poo for field crops! So now replaced with fertiliser containing seafood, especially prawns!
