I have just been gifted this tent for my big birthday coming up. I am a very lucky lady. Thank you for the review, o have watched many whilst deliberating splashing out but like you say you feel secure when you are using it and that’s what I need especially as I embark on my first year of winder wild camps. I’m looking forward to pitching it in the Peaks now I’ve had a play in my garden. Great to see it without the inner aswell. Thanks Twiggy, ATB, Sarah
Wow. That's awesome Sarah, it really is a great tent.. I don't regret buying it at all, if u can get the footprint it just improves the feel of it like comfort and helps with condensation when it's cold. Take a bit longer to pitch, wrap up the guylines when u put it away they can get tangled.. You're all set now come wind and rain.. Who cares what the weather is doing 👍
Hi Jules, glad u found it useful... It really is a fabulous tent, I know its expensive but if you're camping on your own in bad weather it really is the best.... Thanks for your sub. I've got lots of content on the way 🙂👍
Thanks for the review and also for showing the "how to" of putting up a tent. Not many have the skill to do it these days. Lovely to see the English countryside too. Looking out for more of your "escapes." If correct, I'm subscriber 188😁. Cheers fro Sydney Down Under.
Hi, thanks for subscribing... Really appreciate. I'm lucky enough to live next to Peak District National Park which is so beautiful. I've been camping most of my adult life and only just decided to post where I go. There's plenty of escapes coming, I usually go once a week. Hope it's not too cold in Australia, our summer here. Thanks again. 👍
I wish Hilleberg would increase the number of pockets in their inner tents. Also I'm not over keen on the supplied pegs. Most of my camps are in the Dark Peak and on that type of ground 9" Easton nails with Delta pegs at the main stress points offers much purchase. I'm surprised you didn't mention about wrapping the guy lines around the poles before staking them out. This takes some of the stress off the fabric and transfers it onto the pole. Must admit I've never bothered just pitching the outer on its own but you've got me thinking now. I'll give that a go. Totally agree the Soulo is a fabulous tent. Thanks for this video.
Yes, more pockets definitely needed, but I'm willing to sacrifice pockets for the sheer stability and quality... Forgot to mention wrapping guyline round poles something I do usually. Do u have Soulo? Or hilleberg I'm always interested. Cheers very much for comments, really appreciate 👍
@@twiggyescapes Hi, yea I've got the Soulo, Enan and Anaris plus the Tarp 5 and the little mesh tent that will sit nicely under it. There isn't a perfect tent of course but Hilleberg come pretty close. There is the issue of price but with a modicum of care Hillebergs can, and do, last people a lifetime. They also have an excellent resale value. The old adage buy cheap buy twice is never truer than in the backpacking world. They aren't for everybody but if you camp regularly throughout the year I think they are worth the money.
I also have enan but don't think it's great in windy conditions, fair weather tent... Always thought of tarp over tent. I don't regret buying either, I've had a lot of tents and nothing comes close
Had a range of hilleberg tents includfng the soulo and Akto, the best being the Tarra. Now which tent is best, lets have a look: Ventillation: Soulo - only a roof vent with, no through draft. Akto - roof vent and vent at each end with through draft Space Soulo - More inner space Akto - Bigger porch Pitching: Akto - faster with 1 pole Strength: Soulo - has 3 poles, weakspot the side with 1 pole Akto - 1 pole but can have strength doubled with 1 more pole, which is not cheating as soulo has 3, besides, carryng 3 extra poles for Soulo would be too much Akto fabric bends with the wind, Soulo absorbs it. To determine strength - Will an akto pole bend and break first or will the soulo crack a pole from stress?
Interesting thanks, I didn't know about the Soulo weak side, I'll position my tent with this in mind this winter. I have an enan but much prefer the Soulo although the enan is fabulous for a very quick pitch. ATB 👍
@@twiggyescapes Had a Soulo years ago. Guess what? Recently got another one, the Soulo BL and loving it. The inner tent size is just right, porch adequate. Even with the vent open and mesh cover fully open, have had water dripping onto my sleeping bag when no wind, but no issues when windy. Incidentally currently have an akto aswell, also my 2nd.
@@twiggyescapesThe only thing stopping me from buying it, is too many user-reports of condensation issues. Have you experienced any servere issues with condensation in the Soulo?
No, I bought a ground sheet though which apparently makes a big difference... I always open the outside door a little from the ground upwards. Hope that helps.
I didn't know about the red pole, blue pole, white pole colour coding with the sleeves. That's a good feature. My main experience with tents (here in New Zealand) has been with Macpac tunnel tents like the Olympus the poles of which were different lengths. So we would always need to check the correct pole by eye balling it when pitching! Really good tip about usable space inside by not always using the inner. Really the default pitch should be inner not attached. And only add the inner when needed for snow, cold or insects. Speaking of prices, a Soulo in New Zealand costs $NZD 1670. At 1 $NZD = 47 pence that's 784 pounds! How does that compare with current UK prices? (Also its awesome that your review has got 9000 views! )
Thanks for watching. The Soulo here costs around 870 British pound, very expensive but the resale value is really good, I don't regret buying though I always feel very secure in it. It can be a faff with the guylines, have to tie them up so don't get tangled.. NZ is an awesome country would love to go one day. 🙂👍
hillebergs (black and red label) are really snowline tents by and large. In the uk here where it pi$$es down 50 weeks of the year - so pitching outer and inner simultaneously is a benefit. I'd say a black label soulo would still be far too hot if you only pitched inner or outer in a hot climate. they do a netting inner if you want something lighter and thinner for hot areas but hard to get hold of. I think the hilleberg anaris is more intended for hotter climate tent on the yellow label range. they aren't cheap but I don't reckon the fjallravens or MSR's are as good but its all down to personal preference and budget.
Great review there Twiggy. Nice to see the space you get with and without the inner. It is a shame they don't put more pockets in their tents, but other than that they look great. I'm sure one day I splash out and get my hands on one.
Cheers Mark, I bought it with installments only way I could afford, think it's not dead money though has a good resale value. Pockets could be better but don't really use them much anyway, just for phone and torch.... It does give me confidence in bad weather.
If only they were lighter…also had a saulo and sold it for a Abisko lite 2.. far better tent. Hillies are to heavy, condensation prone and overrated expensive.
Fjallraven have some superb tents, I've seen a few reviews on them. Tom heaney did a good review on your tent. I like hilleberg Soulo, makes me feel secure in bad weather. Cheers for comments 👍
Man cmon it’s 2.4 kgs. Surely you can carry that??? For a fortress. As for condensation. 🙄 EVERY tent gets it. It’s about dew point not the tent. Warm day. Cold night = condensation Definitely not overrated.
I’m not a hillie bitch..I’ve had them and sold them and found better tents. Yes they are overrated, as crap TH-camrs keep promoting them because they are so unoriginal content shite.
Looks way too much of a palaver for my tastes. I wouldn't want to be faffing about with 3 "colour-coded" geodesic poles and all those other clips and fasteners in sluicing rain/howling wind/poor light/thick fog/mosquito swarms or whatever...
There are no three colors. There are three color labels on the tent, so that the most daft person would know where the two same lenght poles go, and there is only one tag on the shorter pole in red, to make it so one has to not think at all. Hilleberg sends out a free catalogue for the asking, and it has regular tent fabric swatches, as well as the three weight kerlon fabrics. 1000, 1200, and 1800 weight. They even provide a cut in their fabric swatches. Try to tear it - i could not, even with the lightest weight fabric. That is why the cost is worth it, as well as all the details of the design, which were not shown. No tent is as strong - none.
Yes, very expensive, I had to save for a long time but I don't regret buying it, I always feel very secure in bad weather so for me it was worth the expense. I also have a big agnes copper spur expedition the space and pockets in it is really impressive, it's not as strong as the hilleberg, and although it's a 4 season tent I wouldn't trust it like the hilleberg in a storm. Cheers for watching. Appreciate 👍
