    Yes the Norris vs 08th MS team is arguably the greatest MS fight in the franchise and it is glorious. No newtypes and no super gundams/MS/Mobile Armors just a down and dirty fight between a true blue Zeon ace pilot against a team of talented Federation pilots.

    I place the blame for Gundam Vietnom turning into Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor on the sad fact that the original director, Takeyuki Kanda, was killed in a car wreck midway through the series. Sunrise had to get a new one, and, unfortunately, they picked Umanosuke Iida, who wanted to focus more on the "starstruck lovers" angle than had been originally planned. It's tragic, really. :-(

      I did not know the original director passed away during production, but I didn't mind the Romeo & Juliet story they were telling either. The action was still gritty and realistic.
      We need more well choreographed mobile suit ground combat.

      Shiro and Aina were the only things that kept me interested in the actual plot. I like the themes, setting and battles. But besides Sanders and Shiro the squad was a bunch of unlikeable dickheads. I also didn’t care about Kiki I wish her screen time was cut in half.

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@holyordersol2668 that would be a bit difficult considering that Gundams aren't made for a terrestrial environment, you would have to use other mechs for that which would be a welcome change of pace for me. That and dropping the whole opra part. There comes to a point where you have way too much drama in a series, I personally never cared about soap operas.

    • @holyordersol2668
      @holyordersol2668 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@andresmarrero8666 "Gundams aren't made for terrestrial environment"
      Except the existence of the RX-79[G] Ground Type Gundams proves that to be false. Gundams serve a multitude of roles, even if they need to be modified to do so (i.e. the GP01's transition from Earth to space).
      Also, a mainline Gundam series doesn't exist without some serious drama.
      Now, if you're using the word "drama" to refer specifically to "love story", then I can agree with you.
      As for the "opra part" you mentioned, the only thing that would be lacking is the "space" part of "space opera".
      Honestly, 08th MS Team is hardly unbearably gushy (imo). I feel 0083 is far more over-dramatic with its love story that I wish it just didn't exist (especially when the love triangle is revealed out of left field).
      But to each their own.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Barry Bend Actually a tall object like a fundamental would be far harder to hide. One of the more important aspects of tank design is their profile being as low as practical. All things being equal a taller tank will be easier to spot sooner and thus will lose the advantage of first engagement.
      It was actually one of the major issues with the Bradley fighting vehicle, it started off as a transport then was up armed into a sort of light tank, the problem (or one of them anyway) was the thing was so tall that it became a target of fire before the tanks it may have been accompanying. Being a lightly armored troop carrier playing at a tank this was bad.
      That’s one of the most realistic issues with fundamental type machines in reality.

    Not gonna lie, 8th MS Team is easily my favorite entry into the Gundam-franchise, next to the more recent "Iron-Blooded Orphans" you mentioned. I'm much more into the grounded scenario&warfare and relatable character interactions, compared to the mopey-kid-melodrama and superweapon-spacemagicks of many other Gundam-shows.
    And I even liked the starcross'd-lovers aspect here well enough. Both characters were pretty likable and had good chemistry and I feel that it added a nice additional angle to the entire story. But the series definitely has a somewhat lackluster dub... I enjoyed it much more once I switched to the sub, which has some excellent VAs (funfact: Shiro shares his voice with Zelda's Adult Link... very obvious when he screams :D).
    Would love to see an "Oldtaku, New Tricks"-episode on IBO.

    The One year war took place on all fronts both in space and the earth! Which means both sides needed Mobile Suits on all fronts. The Mobile Suits you see in this series on the ground type which means the mobile suit aren't going to be built the same way.

    I've always liked the more grounded Gundam stories and that's probably the beginning parts of Gundam Seed and Iron-Blooded Orphans pulled me in. Almost no beam weapons, machine guns, melee weapons and all that. It really gives weight to the fights when you can see bullets ricochet off armor and shells hitting the ground.

    • @holyordersol2668
      @holyordersol2668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with the little nit-picks and hang-ups Sage has with the series, but his description of the major strengths and weaknesses are spot on, with the exception of the final conclusion: War movie and space opera do not mix. It may not be easy, but I think they do mix, and the praise Sage himself espoused to the show demonstrates this. I think 0080 demonstrates this as well.

    • @CosmoShidan
      @CosmoShidan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gundam's aim is to show how close to fascism that space opera is, in that the genre is colonialist. I would suggest reading Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, which is similar in themes to gundam.

    • @Superhrnet
      @Superhrnet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CosmoShidan I will have to check it out, you aren't the first to recommend it to me. As for the thematic criticism of Space Opera as a genre; I guess I can see it, considering many of the Tomino directed series specifically emphasize the misery rather than the triumph. As for Anti-Colonialist messaging, I guess Zeta would exemplify that the most, and that Char's near genocidal ideas in CCA are a direct result of the impact the major political forces had on his life; the Zabis, the Feds, the different factions of the Titans, etc.

    • @CosmoShidan
      @CosmoShidan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Superhrnet Space opera is generally a western in space, as it uses a space setting and planets as a stand-in for the USA as an uninhabited frontier. This in turn is perpetuating the American frontier myth, that the US was uninhabited when it was already settled by Native Americans. And yes, aliens are a stand-in for Native Americans. The original series is anti-colonialist in how the Federation imposes its will over its colonial subjects that we see in the first 13 episodes much like the USA or Britain were doing in the 19th and 20th centuries.

    You are right that mobile suits are design for space combat first in mind and that terrestrial combat hinders them. But they have addressed this issue in universe by making several models and variants better suited for the role of ground combat and able to get around without being THAT obvious.

    Can you imagine gundam series combining bits of 8th ms team and operation stardust? Possibly the two best universal era side stories. I think stated this on one of your other videos but i do love gundam series more focused on the soldiers rather than some kid learning to pilot mobile suit for first time and is the main focus of series.
    Am i also the only one odd that war only last a full year...you think with how big the earth is and how vast it is between earth, the moon, and colonies, you think that it would last longer too. I might be over thinking things and trying to apply logic to this.

    I remember being lukewarm to _08th MS Team_ since I thought the whole "fighting is wrong" message Shiro had halfway bugged me. The story of the Midnight Fenrir Corp. from the _Zeonic Front_ ps2 game would make a great OVA since they win every battle they fight and score some impressive victories (even getting one over Whitebase) but in the end, none of it matters since they weren't the "right" battles.
    I'm surprised you didn't mention how the original director died halfway through the series. That definitely accounts for the change in tone and story in the latter half.

A lot of your analysis could be answered with 1/3th of the original or Z being on earth and focusing on ground troops, both small specialized teams and bigger operations.

    I feel like the final episode is the result of it being a kind of prequal series where they wanted to tie it into the rest of the series by implying the beginning of the cybernewtype experiments which really kicked off in Zeta (or Double Zeta). We’re seeing similar issues in western cinema with the trend to “franchise universes” where ham fisted references and cameo’s hinder movies forcing them to tie together rather then stand on their own strength.
