  • High temps. Long days. Rough terrain. Five days. The M3baru shoot took its toll on me.
    You heard Daniel's perspective on this trip and the car, but you haven't heard mine.
    I had so much more footage and images, and I wanted to talk about what went into shooting that trip. My goal was really to just get footage and photos of the car in a lot of different types of environments. I knew we would be going to the desert, the forest, and mountains, and at the end we improvised and made a detour to the coast. I didn’t want this to be a road trip story, I wanted it to be a story about this car told in a lot of different settings, to show that the car can handle anything.
    The M3baru is an all-wheel drive, M-swapped E46 wagon that thinks it’s a Subaru. After a 1,672 mile road trip on harsh terrain through the far reaches of Oregon, I think it’s the perfect answer to a very specific problem.

    Loving the videos. I was wondering if you could do a segment on smartphone car photography. Just can't seem to get the focal length right.

      hello, thanks so much! I did this video about smartphone photography, it's titled "iPhone" but I think just about everything in it is universal for all smartphones. I hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/EuGx3gJgEdY/w-d-xo.html

    Brilliant tips. Something similar to this one but for shooting video would be a great complement to the channel. How did the GH5 handle the trip? Was it your solo camera for video? Your footage looks so good and crisp, idk how you do it. do you use the Canons for video too? And what lenses do you have for it?

    Why didn’t you fly your drone from the palm of your hand and later just catch it while hovering? I do that all the time wherever I see to much dust for my liking.
    Btw great video and love the calm way you narrate every one (instead of being super pumped like all YT).
    What do you use for lighting? I saw a small flash in one sequence. Any strobes? Thnx

    • @capturingthemachine
      @capturingthemachine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! Once I got the dust cleaned out, that's what I did from then on (or take off from the roof of the car). It's funny, the drone even came with a foldout landing pad accessory but I never thought I would need it so I didn't bring it. 😆
      Thanks so much! Sometimes I wonder if I have the right energy for TH-cam, so I appreciate the feedback.
      I brought a small flash - Nikon SB-800 - only for shooting the interior. I have Alien Bees strobes that I rarely use unless I'm doing something weird with color gels. They just kinda slow me down, but I have nothing against them. But out in nature, in the desert or mountains, the natural light is so amazing, it seems like a waste to use strobes.

      @@capturingthemachine My Mavic wont take off from the roof of the car, constantly gives compass errors and some other notices. Does your Mini do that to?

    • @capturingthemachine
      @capturingthemachine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Votjko my Mini did it fine, maybe because I took off from the (glass) sunroof? Maybe a car with more modern electronics would trip it up. I never tried landing on the roof though 🤣

      @@capturingthemachine I don’t have a sunroof, maybe thats the reason. Will try with a car that has one, good idea 💡

      @@Votjko this is the landing pad that was included, it folds up small so I will probably bring it next time if it's going to be dusty: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1388105-REG/pgytech_pgy_ac_308_pgy_75cm_landing_pad.html

    Hey man. If you had to buy one lens to get the widest use, what would be ideal? 24-105 f4, 24-240 f4-6.3, or a 70-200 f2.8? RF lenses. According to what I feel about your videos, you seem to be the largest fan of the 70-200 f2.8. Great video BTW!

    • @capturingthemachine
      @capturingthemachine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you! Your guess was spot-on, I would do the 70-200. If you don't have to do a lot of architecture/interiors/landscapes, I find it very versatile, and it would pair well with a 35 or 50mm prime for getting wider shots. That said, I am completely unfamiliar with that 24-105 lens, it might be great, I don't know. Your best bet is to rent 1 or 2 of these and see if they fit your needs. 👍

    Why not just call it a cool awd m3 wagon? Calling it a m3buru is kind of a disservice imo. But I'm prob just an overly sensitive e46 m3 owner lol.
    Keep up the content, I see a lot of potential for magic here.

      thanks! It's just kind of an in-joke, a term of endearment. Just like with a new pet, you never know what name is going to be the right one. It was going to be the 'M3Xi," but M3baru just stuck. 🤣
