This is definitely a major issue - the fact that it feeds into the elitism in Medicine we already have is what is particularly detestable, imo. Thank you for using your platform to voice your opinion and the facts about the paid resources potential medical applicants are pressured to use.
I’m glad this video was made. Unless someone has sat on several admissions boards for several medical schools, theyre not really going to know what medical schools are looking for in a personal statement. Even then that person would focus more on grades and interview strategies over a personal statement advice. Btw where did you get that monitor in the background it’s really cool.
The impression I've got is that a personal statement really isn't that important for your application, it's much more important to be able to talk about your experience and get good admissions results. Everyone's personal statement pretty much looks the same anyway, everyone's done the same stuff so it's not a good way to differentiate applicants.
Amazing video! Subscribed! I have a question about Work experience. I'm applying this year for Medicine Due to COVID is wasn't able to get work experience. But I have Online virtual work experiences such as ObserveGP, BSMS Virtual Work Experience, and I'm doing volunteering in Science at school this year. I might also apply for some leadership at school this year. Could you tell me if that's enough for work experience for a competitive application? Also I have played volleyball for 2 years ( from 2016 - 2018 ), so can I also put that into my application? And one last thing is that I can speak 5 languages fluently so does that benefit me for a boost in my application and selection?
Hi Fariya, this is a really important question. The key thing to remember is that it doesn't really matter specifically what you've done, that's not what makes you 'competitive' - as long as you meet any minimum requirements. If the minimum is say 80 hours, then someone with 1000 hours of experience has no advantage over someone with 80. They're very rarely interested in the specifics of what you've done, and more in how you can reflect and learn from it. This is because many experiences are simply a function of who you know and your connections. This is why volunteering in a care home at the weekend has to be 'worth' the same as a month spent watching open heart surgery. Languages wise it probably won't specifically score you any more points, but certainly something you may wish to reflect on and talk about at interview if it's relevant.

It's just an old Kindle tablet running stock footage on a loop 😂
