I am not sure if this was said or not, but when carving this foam it is very important to wear a ventilator mask as these tiny dust particles are extremely toxic. It is actually much safer to carve foam with a hot wire knife as the fumes released from them are not toxic in a well ventilated area though i do still wear a mask any time I carve/cut my foam.
Warnings NOT included: This foam is highly static and makes terrible noises when cutting. Ceramic knives from a craft store are highly effective and be sure to never cut towards any part of your body.
I love this tutorial! Your crafts are amazing 👌👌 (But I just wanted to give you a heads up, I know a lot of people recommend wearing a respirator mask while sanding insulation board because it has fiberglass in it and it can really jack up your lungs)

Haha I totally get that - they give me headaches sometimes after too long and drive me crazy. You could always attach these to hair clips as well individually, or if you're wearing a wig you can use magnets to attach them underneath the netting :)

Do you have any suggestions for horns that have to be twisted into a curve? The problem is that from a top down perspective like your initial outline the horn overlaps itself.
Hmm this method would be hard for a full curl horn. It is possible but the template and cut out phase require more 3D carving. I think a dremel would be very needed for it ^_^
I have access to a hot foam cutter. I can see that it would save me a lot of time in cutting the foam for this project. I like that these horns would be very lightweight.
+Wren Marxen Of course! You can use absolutely any color of paint! These are just what suited my creature Silver, black, grey and white would give you a monochromatic look in that shade range ^.^
Butter Spice2 Hot glue will make it trickier to cut as the knife will get caught on the dried glue while carving. You also run the risk of it melting the foam when it's hot unfortunately
Is there any way to do the divots in the horns without using that knife...sandpaper tool thing..(I don’t know what it’s called..) cause I don’t own one 😅
Yea you can make those with the sandpaper wrapped around a brush like I did secondly :D I will take a bit longer but totally possible to get the same results without the dremel

The end result is really amazing, kudos! :D I do have a question though. :) I haven't attempted using Insulation Foam before and through my personal experience have been told that insulation is harmful and should be handled with gloves / a mask, but I noticed you didn't wear either. Is this Insulation Foam you purchased safe to handle with bare hands like you do in your video? I've tried doing research but nothing actually states "wear protective clothing, etc". It would be super helpful if you could answer this for me, thank you! :D
I think what you were reading about is just traditional insulation which is a fiberglass like material that can cause irritation to the body. I would wear a dust mask or respirator if your going to sand this foam regardless.
It takes a bit more time but you can just use sandpaper wrapped around a pencil or marker with different grits, and makes the indents that way. The curve shape will help the indents stay smooth as you move down :)
- Neko - if you wrap the sandpaper around a pencil (or something else round bigger or smaller depending on the size you want) and then run it in the grooves it works just as well.
hey, just wanted to suggest something, coming from someone who is also tight on money... if you have facebook there are usually local buy sell trade groups! you can find a dremil super cheap on one of those pages. I got a dremel with like 200 attachments in a toolbox for 30 bucks! stay thrifty :)
It is good at holding it's shape but yes, it would be similar to a greater density Styrofoam so if you smashed the tips they would probably break. For true stability I would recommend covering the horns in a thermoplastic like Worbla :)
Although this is way too awesome, itll be way to much work for me that in not an artist. But i do do my horn with foil paper, cotton, paper towels, hot glue, two different colors of spray paint, and onix glitter! Also added some led lights. They look pretty cool. Almost look enchanted!
Hmm I can't be sure now since I made these a while ago... You may be right in them being thicker - They could have possibly been 1 1/2" sheets to make a total of 3"? I just know they're not the 2" boards as those have a visible demarcation line in them. If you prefer the ability to cut down more, though, I always suggest going larger with the foam, or adding extra layers. That way you have a buffer ^^

Hmm I'm not sure the exact hardness I use insulation foam board, but floral foam also works (the light green kind not the mushy stuff haha) :) Insulation foam board should come in pink or blue options at hardware stores
Neato! I made a pair out of wire and celluclay and spray painted them gold when I was finished. They weigh probably half a pound total. I'll be using your tutorial for this makeup tonight!

bit late but try building supply shops or warehouses. they have it for insulating houses and such and is cheap. also check skips (dumpsters) as builders and construction sites can throw away massive amounts of the stuff and you can build a lot of things out of it from horns to wargaming terrain to canoes! :)

Okay. I'm getting frustrated. I have all the materials needed to make this and I've attempted to do it. Twice. But for some freaking reason I can't carve into it. Or even glue it on right. Why didn't it work??? I have the insulation foam and every time I've tried to glue two of the prices together it won't stay. I've even placed some heavy speakers on it to press it close to make sure it would stick and it didn't work!! Then, when I gave up and tried to carve into it anyways, thinking I could maybe glue it on later, it was all choppy and shitty and it wouldn't carve easily like it did for you. What am I doing wrong?? I'm getting frustrated.
I honestly don't know why the spray adhesive wouldn't work....I've used it for years without any problems. The only other glue I've ever used with foam is regular Elmer's white glue and let it fully set for a day or so to fully bond the pieces. For carving the foam itself, I always have multiple blades available since foam dulls a blade incredibly fast, and you need the sharp edge to make the cuts smooth. Keeping the cuts shallow as you move along often helps me as well from having the blade catch and make a choppy cut
I watched this before I made my horns and when I didn't have the material I gave up but thEN I FOUND SOME AT MY SCHOOL AND BOUGHT IT AND NOW I HAVE HORNS YAY
This again proves the difference between a MUA that only used make-up and someone so talented to not only create incredible works of art on a moving 3D canvas plus makes hoorns and all other art by using the most diverse materials you can think of. So l think that who does make-up and facepaint and some bodypaint too plus also makes all accessories her- or himself should have a totally different titel then just MUA ????
I say this with love, never cut towards yourself.
It takes an awkward minute teaching yourself, for a happy lifetime without awkward scars. :-)

I don't think that's true with carving when It comes to peeling potatoes or whittling you would carve inwards
