That well was the main supply of water for the house and as I recall, in those days it was connected to 2 large tanks that were always full of water. The technology of today is just amazing, what you have, would have made my uncle and aunt's lives much easier, back then , they lived without electricity and that well was their water supplier for the house, and they had a large family. Keep up the good work !!!!!!! Cheers from Canada !!!!!!
Just watched a blog of yours from 5 years ago "Sailing from Azores to Hamble", you guys are fearless. Meraid, you had me in stitches when you began singing "Twelve Days of Chaos" by Frank Kelly (Fr. Jack) you are such a tonic. How you both stayed so calm sailing in that storm I do not know. Love watching your adventures, so educational and entertaining. ❤️
Thanks Ber. Dan hadn’t a clue what I was singing but I remember going on a drive with my mammy and listening to that song on the radio for the very first time. We laughed so much I could hardly see the road for the tears. 🤣🤣
Wow, very cool! The Wellometer will be a game changer indeed. My only concern is protecting the box with batteries and electronics against the bright Portugal sun and heat in the summer. But I expect you are already a step ahead with plans to deal with that. And a weather station would be the frosting on the cake. You are very fortunate to have such helpful and kind friends. Enjoy the adventure. :-)
The small well is easy to see the changes. It mostly stays the same and is much shallower. A stick works for measuring that quite well. Oh no, I said it again! Well!
Tin snips come in handy but remember that they're manufactured in left and right handed articles. Hacksaw blades or any blade, the softer the material the coarser the pitch of teeth per inch, when cutting a soft thin piece of steel choose a very fine pitched blade. A wood saw or chainsaw have coarse pitched teeth for a reason.
Great hack! Can you give the specifications of the setup you assembled? (Make and model of the several parts) I’d like to install a similar data logger to register our wells level because we just visit our property twice a year, and we wanted to understand the dynamics of the water sheet.
Thank you 😊 It was built by Stuart and John (Dan’s friends). We don’t know the actual specifications but hopefully one of them will see your comment and reply if they have time.
It’s a high end pressure transducer which doesn’t require calibration on setup unless high levels of accuracy or certification are required. It’s good enough for what we need at the moment.
I always wonder why the pumps are so heavy duty. 4x car windscreen washer motors running from a 12v solar panel constantly running during the day, seems such a cost effective solution.
What, no BlueTooth capability to download the data from the unit? Come to that, why isn't the data automatically (or even periodically) uploaded to the cloud? I can see a Version 2.0 of the Wellometer on the horizon.
That could make a great short movie! Call it the Green Well Swamp Monster Coming for you! He would need a ugly head (like the monster from the Black Lagoon, only green, large claw like hands, green swamp body and legs, oh and with a green tail like a croc if you please, LOL). Now that would be a short movie! With the misses running for the house and her swamp well shotgun, loaded with tranquilizer darts (just a paint ball gun, load with some red paint balls). Good luck on your new movie!
"Oh wellwellwell" Hahaha. Now a little PI SBC board in there with WiFi and you could se the data live on your laptop from home! 🙂 Would you share what model of pressure transducer that is? It looks commercial grade! Cheers.
No Wi-Fi on site yet, Alain. It is a commercial grade pressure transducer but it’s at the bottom of the well now so i can’t tell you make or model. Sorry 😣
Love your you tube posts! Have you considered the impact of strong UV/prolonged heat on the wellometer display, inverter and junction box contents? Maybe resite the electronics on the shadier side of the ibc?
That’s an important question. Yes we have. For now, it’s not hot 🥵 but we put it out of sight of the track to begin with. And Dan hasn’t got around to fixing the brackets he made yet either. Even in the shade it can reach 40C here in the hottest part of summer. Thinking caps are on. Thank you for such a great comment. 😊👍
I've been looking for a while, for getting my well water tested. I can't seem to get a handle on how to get that done. Does anyone have infor on this topic for a person in Vila Nova de Gaia, or Porto, or Viseu?
technology nowadays is getting over people's lives...people are depending too -way too - much in technology and the old skills will be lost soon...people in few years will not be able to do things with their hands, nor to have problem solving skills ....sad
You people seem to be in your 50s,but you have the energy of 20 year old. An inspiration.
Thank you 😊

Brilliant! How fabulous to have found such knowledgeable people on the subject.
Yes, it’s fabulous to have experts help with their experience 👍

Thanks Mary. It’s going to be interesting to see how it fills and empties over time. 😊
What a great adventure!
Thank you 😊
Brilliant job! Take care, Poo
Thank you 😊
Great explanation from Dan! X
Glad you liked it! Thanks, Maggie. X
Thanks for sharing your journey😊 Great video
Thanks, Mary 😊
Wonderful device!
It’s been really helpful 👍
Loved the famous steel cutting scissors! Well done Meraid!
Those famous steel cutting scissors ✂️ are even more famous now 🙄
@@NearbyVeggies Amazing how well "old" technology can work.
Indeed 😂
We have to stop doing this so well 😊👍

@Nearby Veggies I know what you mean. Think it even made its way to Top of the Pops 😊 we are of the same vintage ❤️ xxx
😉
Well, that wonderful. Keep us updated on the well/ water situation. Praying you get a good amount of rain this spring.
Thank you 😊
You folks never cease to amaze me
Excellent. Hopefully you’re enjoying yourself. 😊
Scissors make no horrible noises!
That’s for sure 👌
"Well" informative "Well" worth waiting for "Well" done 🤠
Wellometer rocks. 👍

We are indeed thinking about all of those things. Mulling over ideas at the moment. 😊👍
Amazing video!!! Great to see it installed and working 👍👍👍👍 hopefully it will help give a little insight to what the well does and be useful!!
It’s a cracking gizmo. Thank you for coming up with the idea and all the bits that went into building our wellometer 😊🤠
The Wellometer. What a brilliant device !
I guess really one could do with one for each well one uses.
The small well is easy to see the changes. It mostly stays the same and is much shallower. A stick works for measuring that quite well. Oh no, I said it again! Well!
You know you're a farmer when...you use baler twine to " temporarily " fix stuff! Great video!
Thanks Ian. It comes in handy 😂

Thank you. We’ll get some tin snips soon. 👍
I like a bit of tech! Looking forward to seeing the results. Well done!
You and me both! We will give an update in a while. 😊👍
Almost 14,000 subscribers already! Well, well, well. It is no wonder. Great videos!
Thanks, Roselyn. We appreciate every single one of you. 😊
Very cool setup! Well the box could have been smaller,, but cool!
Thank you 😊
Well done ❤️

Oooh! Exciting stuff :)
Very exciting indeed. 😊

Now if you could just get it to turn on the rain when it needs water and you would have a real good system.
Wouldn’t that be something 😂💦
Nice high tech solution. Me, I'd have stuck a scale on the wall and looked down with a torch!
We used to use a string with knots but we weren’t able to track the levels in a meaningful way. We still use a stick to measure the small well. 😊👍
@@NearbyVeggies love it.
Ah, the good old fashioned ways work too. 😊👍
Very interesting.
Very! 😊
How did you calibrate the transducer ?.
It’s a high end pressure transducer which doesn’t require calibration on setup unless high levels of accuracy or certification are required. It’s good enough for what we need at the moment.

Would covering the small well, stop the green algae, thus preserving clarity?
It’s a pond weed rather than algae. The water is actually crystal clear and full of wild life. 😊
🤟

As far as I know you can take a sample to the analysis clinics and they can send it to the right place.
