I bought the no flap extra size Blake sleeves for the double and triple albums and they seem to be holding up nicely. But the ones that you are showing look really strong which is very important for longevity. I always thought about the dust too but we cannot worry about everything right? I think the problem I have with the sideways opening is that they are hard to put and take off the shelves without the sleeves moving. I also agree with keeping the record inside the jacket. I do not think that the jacket gets ringwear as long as it is in a protective sleeve. Maybe if you are constantly playing it and taking it in and out it may get rings in time. Very nicely done all around. So many point/counterpoint facts. Thanks Mikko, always great hearing from you~ Rob/Boston
Thanks for making this. Was exactly what I was looking for and I share a lot of your opinions and wish I knew more. This helped me a lot and will change the way I try and take care of my vinyl.
I also store them the exact same way. I don't have any of the gatefold sleeves but will be looking for that. I also have the same Never Say Die, with that same sticker that comes on it. I often peal them off the shrink wrap and save those too. As for order - same thing - alphabetical by band name and chronologically, starting with oldest release first.
Perfect Tips on Vinyl Storage, Mikko. Love your videos - always looking forward to your Passion for Music. Yeah, your 100% correct on shrink wrap - great tip.
Mikko, very nice video. As you probably know, I don't bother with the outer sleeves, but I love the poly inner sleeves (I do it after cleaning, so that way I know I cleaned it and don't have to do it again).
Thanks Kris! I replace the sleeves from new albums, because I don't want the original printed inner sleeves to get seam splits. I know some people also clean the new records because there might be some grease or something from the pressing plant. I'm not are about that, but maybe I'll try that some day. But with used records I always clean them before replacing the inner sleeve, so it's easier to know which ones I have already cleaned. Thanks for watching! By the way, I have couple of records which have been in my shelves for their first 30 years without any protective sleeves and they don't have any ringwear… ;)
Thanx for sharing. Those gatefold sleeves are cool. About the concert tickets, here in Germany, they're now mostly thermal printed (like fax), so if you put them in a protective sleeve the print will fade.
that's a great way to store your albums!! thanks for sharing..I need to find the coves like you have for double albums so you can open them like you did.
I store my records the same way as you do Mikko. I also finally decided to use those polyethylene outer sleeves. But I also use them for my gatefold albums. I also use polylined inner sleeves for the vinyl, and save the original ones, But not if they're white paper sleeves with no print. And at this point I only do it with new records, and my favorite used albums. Haven't got the money to buy for all my records.
Thank you for your comment Carsten. I have replaces only small proportion of my inner sleeves. And now I'm running out of them. So, I must order some more and keep on cleaning...
nice video mikko, think i have the same as you for normal records. basic polylined paper sleeves and replace the old ones. i do have some polyline inner sleeves with no paper jacket if the jacket isnt not basic. i think we use the same outter jackets bit cloudy like you say but solid and no nasty noise. have not had any gate fold jackets as yet. might have to check them out. cheers Dean
Igor, I've been collecting vinyl for 35 years since I was a teen and never ever remove my shrink wrap, dad has had his 50's and 60's vinyl in shrink and vinyl never ever warped. Friends as well.
I'm with you on the alphabetical order starting with the artist's first name. but I differ on the chronological order, going as far as to keep the album titles in alphabetical order as well.
Hi, Mikko I agree with you completely except one thing -> I don't remove shrink wraps! Though it has to be a hell of an exception to do that but I try to keep records as original as possible. Yes it's a pain in the you-know-where when it comes to gatefold sleeves but still. It's pretty rare that shrink wraps actually shrink but it can happen so you have the point there. Maybe I should get some of those gatefold ones 'cause I don't have any. I have never liked those "Blake sleeves". A good thing is that the best Finnish record shop doesn't sell and use those. :-) Karhu rules, Jarkko / MyVinylBar
I've never seen the gatefold sleeves before. I really could use some of those. I really like how you keep the records complete with the sticker. I just have one question that's probably been asked too many times: What material do you recommend the outer sleeves be made of? Thanks for the video!
hey bro , nice video. we are storing our records the exact same way appart from the gatefold sleeves and the removal of the paper inner sleeve ;) john/greece
"So, it's unbelievable that man has been to the moon, but we still haven't made perfect record sleeves" HAH. quote of the year! Great info on storage. I'm now going to remove the shrink from the albums I kept them on just in case (I dunno why I leave some on and some off anyway). I still haven't bought extra sleeves though I keep saying I will... I instead buy another record when I have the money, argh! I do have sleeves on certain albums that came with them; I appreciate soundstage direct for including one with each purchase. they use the open ones. I want some of those gatefold ones! :O
My local record shop always gives those polyethylene sleeves with the records I buy from there. I think that's a nice extra service. You can order those gatefold ones from Sounds Wholesale Ltd. Thanks for watching!
There are PVC outer sleeves which are clear, soft and durable, but there are issues with it, people report a build up of white residue on the records over time (especially if the record comes into contact with the PVC outer sleeve (google on "pvc record sleeve ruined" to find out more). I have some records in PVC outer sleeves but had no residue yet (after 3 or 4 years of use). But most of my records are in the PE outer-sleeves you also use and had no problems with that so far in 10 years time. The more valuable records I also keep in poly-lined inner sleeves, like you do (but there seem to be issues with that too (read the article on recordcollectormag dot com to find out more).
Thank you for your comments. I believe the gatefold sleeves I showed are made from PVC. I've had no problems with them so far, but I'll keep my eye on them. The PE ones seem to be bullet proof stuff.
Great Video tips. Can you please provide links for where you find your sleeves and album protectors? I know you mentioned them but its a little hard for me to make out what the company website is called. I especially liked the gatefold sleeves. Thank you. Cheers!
Liked the video. what do you do with a triple gatefold, if you have any? I ordered a couple of Swans records, and they are like that. It's something I haven't seen yet in my time collecting records
great video Mikko ... that's pretty much exactly how I store my records as well. only difference is that we don't get to buy records sleeves and protective jackets here in India. however I do come across certain custom made sleeves once in a while so I use those. they can pretty much manage in keeping the records safe. But storing Gatefolds are a pain in the ass as some Gatefolds vary in sizes. I somehow manage to store them without having to go through much trouble. However i do need to buy a lot of inner and outer sleeves online. the only problem is the prices and the shipping rates. do you get mobile fidelity sleeves there in Finland. I really want to try those out but they are so damn expensive. thanks man for the lovely video. cheers!!!
I have changed my mind and it is so much easier to get records back on the shelf when you drop the record in the inner. I have my Lps behind the sleeve now so it is really easy to do everything and I only look at the backside when I am playing or inspecting a record sleeve so no artwork or information is hidden from me. Do the Outer sleeves protect the bottom of the sleeve well enough when you do it this way? I do not imagine it realistically being a problem, probably only if the Outer is of very thin plastic. This one seems strong enough to tolerate this and more. Opinions?
I like keeping records in shrink wrap. Sealed records are cool. If I really want to play the record I can take the shrink wrap off. For Sealed records to be damaged it will if at all take decades so there is no rush. Keep records Sealed unless you are going to play them.
+aquavitvibes72 lol wtf... so you just buy them seem 'cool' and let them sit there? Righto. Plus, if you just leave vinyl completely untouched, it can do a lot more harm than good.
SELF-RELIANCE and a STRONG COMMUNITY I agree with that, yes. Could be worth a lot more in the future. But he's talking about just buying a new vinyl... to just keep it sealed... something that has most likely been pressed in 2016.
Hi, Do you know how to remove old shrinkwrap from records from say 25 years ago. I left shrink-wrap or whatever you call it on an album I bought from 30 years ago and you cannot peel it off now, it wants to pull away at the cover. I have thought of hair dryer, but does anyone know a good method to achieve this. Thanks.
Thanks! If you want a brand new turntable, forget all the USB "turntables" and other plastic toys. Brands like Pro-Ject and Rega has some good entry-level turntables which are quite affordable. But for the same amount of money, you can find also a very good vintage turntable. When people ask me why, I recommend them to watch this video: th-cam.com/video/47psqXMB6jo/w-d-xo.html Mark makes some very good points there, so check it out!
TheVinylCorner Thanks so much for the reply! I saw the video and once again am glad I'm learning more. Would it be possible if you could tell me specific models you recommend? My budget on just the turntable is around 3 to 4 hundred dollars. And if its not to much to ask can you tell me what kind of turntable you own? Once again thank you.
Mikko - that is awesome…the response is only 1 year later :) Thanks for sharing and I hope you're doing well. RE: JD's Vinyl Community Record Storage Contest
Thank you for a good video! Have you tried arranging your records in chronological order based on the date of their release? This creates your very own 'time-line'. For me it is so much more rewarding and interesting to hear a record in its context. For example the sequence of LP releases in 1967 which I have in my collection: The Doors - Jan 67, Surrealistic Pillow, Jefferson Airplane - Feb 67; Grateful Dead 1st LP - March 67; The Velvet Underground &Nico - March 67; Are You Experienced? Jimi Hendrix Exp -May 67; Sgt Pepper -June 67; Flowers, The Rolling Stones -June 67; Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - Floyd -Aug 67; Strange Days, The Doors - Sept 67; Days Of Future Past - The Moody Blues Nov 67, Disraeli Gears, Cream - Nov 67; Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Donovan- Dec 67. Just a thought !
Hey, I store my vinyl the same way as you, can't stand the sound of the flap opening. The gatefold sleeve is something I have not seen, great. Hearing that sound every time I wanted to listen to a record would drive me to download. Gary
I store my records exactly the same way as you. I also buy all my polylined inner sleeves and "cloudy" outer sleeves from sounds wholesale. I`m surprised how many people in the V.C keep their vinyl in the original inner paper sleeves as these sleeves will always scratch the vinyl over time. It`s really weird that petrol stations in Finland sold vinyl. Do record shops in Finland sell petrol ?
Thanks! I remember the days they were selling cassettes at gas stations, but I have never seen vinyl in those places. There might be some crappy CDs nowadays. Good summer music. :D
Hey Mikko, tx very much for those tips. I'm about to order some of those nice gatefold covers. By the way, what is the music playing in the background ? i have an idea but I'm not sure. Kiitos
What a fucking awesome video Mikko! Me personally, I use the BLAKE sleeves with flaps and the frosted inner sleeves on all my vinyls used and new... just like James, I also leave the shrink wrap on it :-P .... BTW, my son asked me how do I clean my jackets/cover of the vinyl and I had no idea.... do you have any suggestions? Thanks man, stay metal \,,/ JC/Miami
Thank you JC! I think I have couple of those frosted inner sleeves and I really like them. But the Blake sleeves with flaps are not my cup of tea. Too much hassle for me. :D I just clean my record jackets with a microfiber cloth and very small amount of dish soap. Kris @ dixielandfarm just showed he uses baby butt cleaning wipes and I think I'll try them next. Thanks for watching!
I've got a bookshelf at my house which I was thinking of storing my records on, but the albums overhang by about 3 inches. Would this cause any problems over time? Help? Somebody? Please?
mikko, hope your doing well my friend. luv the Opeth shirt brother!! what is the name of the company you bought the Maiden gatefold protector from and do you have a website for them? have to get one of those for my copy. ROCK ON \m/ \m/
Kiitti kommentista!
Are those PVC (Polyvinylchloride) gatefold sleeves ? I have recently found and there is lot of info regarding the damage caused by the PVC sleeves to the records, so i now have removed all my records from the PVC sleeves. A lot of collectors have advised that it`s a lot safer to use the cheaper polyethylene sleeves. Any thoughts about this?
Yeah, I've read some horror stories about the PVC sleeves. Maybe I should remove all these sleeves too. I wish someone would male this kind of openable gatefold protective from some other material...
TheVinylCorner acid free paper black inner sleeves and 4 mil thick outer is my trick. If my records have regular non art black jackets, I swap them out for brown jackets. Looks very nice with the black inners. Great vid cheers from Cali.
heat certainly wont help over time. If the records get warm then cool quickly there is a good chance they could warp.If you havent got any other space to put them then line the bottom of the crate with something to stop the heat getting through.
This one was designed to look like it has circular wear from pulling it from your shelf of records and returning it later. Pope Francis as a Soul Surfer! www.etsy.com/listing/240213280/pope-francis-modern-sounds-for-soul
Well they made direct drive ones for DJ's when there on the radio a lot of them didn't know how to change a belt (not Mechanically Inclined) so this was eaiser I'm more of a belt man I was on e bay looking at TT that all just asking Thanks
I love your intro when you crack that beer open and say: "welcome vynil community!"
Hahahaha, that's awesome!
You are an excellent presenter. I really dig your style. Good video
Thank you!
Very helpful - i just bought some outer sleeves yesterday and I want to protect my investment. Thanks for posting this. :)

Thank you for your comments Rob! It's always nice to hear from you.
Great video Mikko! Good to learn a few of your tips about vinyl record storage. Looking forward to your cleaning methods to 2nd hand records.
that's a great idea to put the vinyl in a polylined sleeve, I'm going to purchase some now, thanks :)
Thanks for making this. Was exactly what I was looking for and I share a lot of your opinions and wish I knew more. This helped me a lot and will change the way I try and take care of my vinyl.

Thanx for sharing. Those gatefold sleeves are cool. About the concert tickets, here in Germany, they're now mostly thermal printed (like fax), so if you put them in a protective sleeve the print will fade.
Yeah, most of the tickets are those crappy printed ones nowadays. That's so sad, because they would be nice memorabilia. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips. Love the sleeves. Will def. be getting them.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank YOU!
I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you for the great information!
Cool t-shirt
Very interesting and great video
Thank you!
that's a great way to store your albums!! thanks for sharing..I need to find the coves like you have for double albums so you can open them like you did.
Good comparison...the Moon and Record sleeves😄
Other than replacing the sleeves you store them exactly like me! Beautiful job!
Cool! Thanks!
I do it the same way! :) Except that I stick the stickers on the outer sleeve :) Thanks for the video.

whoah that's the first time i've seen that type of gatefold sleeve!
Good tips.
Yep, I think I found those sleeves originally via Adrian (pudsi) or Rob (26bond) . I really like the way they work. Thanks for watching!
Cool video man. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Norman!
I'm with you on the alphabetical order starting with the artist's first name. but I differ on the chronological order, going as far as to keep the album titles in alphabetical order as well.
Some helpful tips brother!
I've learned a couple things from you, great advice! I didn't know about gatefold sleeves, very good
Thanks for watching! I'm glad if I could help a little.

Shrink wrap does indeed warp records, I bought a single brand new probably a year or two old and it was warped and had ring wear.
I've never seen those outer sleeves for gatefold! Thanks from Sweden 🇸🇪
Yeah homeboy i like those gatefold sleeves. Thanks
Good Information.
Love that tshirt mikko!
Thanks Jonas! I love it too!

Hi Gary! It's good to hear I'm not alone with this. Thanks for watching!
NICE SHIRT
Thanks! It's nice to wear white band shirts every now and then, not always just the black ones. And of course, the classic Opeth logo is always cool.

Carolina County Ball!!!
Hey Mikko, tx very much for those tips. I'm about to order some of those nice gatefold covers.
By the way, what is the music playing in the background ? i have an idea but I'm not sure.
Kiitos
Will it hurt the record if I frame it with the plastic wrap still sealed on the record. I'm having them hanging on my walls
+Brandon Wall No, I don't think so. Just make sure that it's not too tight.

Thanks for watching!
Oh shit! baby wipes who would have thought... I'll have to give it a try. Thanks bud! JC/Miami
GaRRaPatero España Yep! Just don't use the smelly ones. ;)
Hey there. How do you usually repair any album covers you have that need to be repaired?
Hey! I don't buy them. :D
But, seriously. I have only glued some seams, but I have no album covers which needs more repairing.
If the hype sticker is on the outer jacket, not the shrink, do you keep it there?
Yes. I wouldn't try to remove it. I think it's part of the album.
TheVinylCorner how would you prevent the record from warping? simply by a room temp cool, sleeve, no shrink wrap?
I've got a bookshelf at my house which I was thinking of storing my records on, but the albums overhang by about 3 inches. Would this cause any problems over time? Help? Somebody? Please?
Probably not
no it will be absolutely fin but you want to make sure that they are out the way so people dont walk by them and bang into them. cheers
brought to you by " karhu pale ale " best ale in kerava since 1929
What was the name of that record that said "Featuring Ronnie James Dio"? I couldn't see the name very well
Carolina County Ball by Elf
Trevor Philips Yeah, that's it. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm a big fan of RJD
mikko, hope your doing well my friend. luv the Opeth shirt brother!!
what is the name of the company you bought the Maiden gatefold protector from and do you have a website for them? have to get one of those for my copy. ROCK ON \m/ \m/
Thanks Jerry! The gatefold protective sleeves are from Sounds Wholesale Ltd. Thanks for watching!
Which album is playing in the background?
+Paulo Victor That's a band called Moonwagon. Thanks for watching!
i have my albums in a shipping container laying on top of eachother and it gets hot so im worried about warpage. do you think theyll warp?
your records will be best kept upright. they will be more prone to warpage if you lay them on top of each other. cheers
Spinit Tweeks i put them upright now im just worried about the heat warping them regardless.
heat certainly wont help over time. If the records get warm then cool quickly there is a good chance they could warp.If you havent got any other space to put them then line the bottom of the crate with something to stop the heat getting through.
Spinit Tweeks cant warped lps be fixed? i saw something thats supposed to fix them.
you can get a "vinyl flat" press but I have heard results vary.
This one was designed to look like it has circular wear from pulling it from your shelf of records and returning it later. Pope Francis as a Soul Surfer!

take the dust covers out who needs those? And stack em up in an attic.
Why? I don't want to my turntable to get any more dusty than nowadays.
if a russian says your record sleeve will last through a nuclear war you better buy that shit
Where to buy?
What kind of TurnTable do you have?
I have Yamaha YP-D6, vintage direct drive turntable from the late 1970s.
Thanks do U think it's better then a belt drivin one?
pdrummer davis It's not so easy to say. There's good things in both direct drive and belt driven turntables.
Well they made direct drive ones for DJ's when there on the radio a lot of them didn't know how to change a belt (not Mechanically Inclined) so this was eaiser I'm more of a belt man I was on e bay looking at TT that all just asking Thanks
Katso nyt mikko ettei lähde keulimaan liikaa..ton oluen suhteen...

SO.. are you just pretending that millions of RECORDS were not pressed on styrene... or do you really think they're all vinyl ?
Did I say something like that? Like the title of this video says, these were tips for VINYL records.
you say.... two words.... then pause.... it's causes...... me anxiety......
I am terribly sorry. I can make the video again in Finnish if that helps you.
give me nuclear launch codes
Zzzzz
Is it normal for the edges of vinyl records to have little frays/strings of vinyl on the edges when you buy them?
+Kingro619
Yeah - probably from manufacturing process. Not ''normal'' but fairly common.
