  • Dear friends
Apparently, I’ve been frequenting the food stalls at section 17 for umpteenth years before Seventeen Mall came about. You see 15 years ago I was performing in a pub for 5 days a week to get extra income. After I finished worked from my day’s job at 7.30pm, I would come to the section 17 glutton street to have dinner and kill time before I start my job in the pub at 9pm, since my office, the glutton street and the pub was inside the radius of 3 km. Before I knew it, I’ve already performed in the pub for 7 years, so when I stopped the pub job, I never really went back Section 17 glutton street for dinner. But can you imagine how many times I had my dinner in this interim food location. This episode is my chance to catch up with some of my old vendor friends albeit in a new environment. Meanwhile please go out and support the local street food, be it here or otherwise. Thanks, and see you in the next.

Great introduction to prelude into this section 17 Foodie Haunts. Many stalls caught my attention and these are the few that I replayed. 1. Chee Cheong Fun with it's good sauce (with curry gravy) and "yeong liew" that goes with it deliciously. 2. The self service dessert with many types of sweet tong sui to spoil everyone. 3. The Char KeowTeow for the hardworking son taking over from his Mum to try his best to emulate the best for his food buyers. Guess we should encourage those younger generation especially those putting on their best to create the "old taste" for us to enjoy. Last but not least - I had a good jovial and laughing moment when you mentioned the British did also leave quite some " Sou Chow Si" for us to carry on. Very true indeed. Overall - a great episode and must be also quite nostalgic to those UM students and also for those who stays near to Section 17. Yatt Lau !!! Mou Tatt Deng !!!👌👌👌

thank you for sharing uncle elmo and personally I think this part of section 17 is very attractive to those who wants convenience. Food aside, St.Xavier's Institution was formerly my alma mater in the 90's. A very old school that's rich with history. Stay safe out there 🙏

Another good history lesson about the decline standard on UM and history of Section 17. This video only covers the five-footway next to Seventeen Mall. Around the vicinity of Seventeen Mall there are more to offer, perhaps part 2 in the making. Seventeen Mall is doing very badly and Aeon the anchor tenant has recently moved out. Note: I like the new subtitles fonts.

A more appropriate translation is "biased against" 針對佢 (negative connotation) instead of "biased towards" when you're talking about the discriminatory policies implemented by the British that were meant to sow discord among Malaysians. I know this is nitpicking but since you're gushing over the legacy of the English education system left by the British, it felt appropriate to mention it. 😝

I fully agree... not only i learn new places for good food , i also learned about the historical facts which is interesting and not found in our so-called " history books " . However i would also like to add that , besides Penang Free School , Malacca High School is the 2nd oldest school built in 1826 also by the British and my alma mater . I would like to say , at the new village there's a Tit Tar sifu which is pretty good , he also sells herbal tea at the market place . The chee cheong fun , i ate them during the open space till now ... still delicious especially the curry . Majority of the stalls serves good and delicious food. Used to have an elderly couple that sells fried noodles .. their " yut kong hor " was smooth and nice. Nowadays i dont see them anymore. Lastly , the tong sui shop is a stall i will never ever support them , the owner is rude and has no manners , sorry to say this here ... but awful service no matter how nice the food , its a fail to me . Thanks Elmo for sharing this video

All colonial masters have their past skeletons in the closet during their reigns in regions which not supposed to belong to them, no doubt. But call a spade a spade, they did contribute quite a lot of good to their then subjects as well, particularly the British, efficient public administration system, renowned education system, fairer judicial system and good foundation for our now public amenities and so on, just to name a few! On the other hand, just look at some ex colonized countries, where are they now? Simply put, many of them have became from good to bad or even worse right after gaining independence from their former colonial masters. Perhaps, Singapore is one of the very few exceptions.
No matter what, Malaysia is still one of the best places for good food in the region, if not in the world in my opinion, especially so when it compares to nations that I had been stationed during my younger days.
