The Three Great Bodhisattvas represent the three main focuses of Buddhist Practice - to cultivate Wisdom, Compassion and the Power of Enlightened Activity. (We do introduce them in another video here: th-cam.com/video/MmO-cG6GXCU/w-d-xo.html Thought of in another way, the Three Great Bodhisattvas represent the Three Main Qualities and Perfections of the Buddha - the three qualities we need to bring into our lives to walk the Enlightened Bodhisattva Path. These are their "heart" mantras. AVALOKITESHVARA: Om Mani Padme Hum: In this mantra oṃ is uttered first because it is the essence of the five wisdoms; hūṃ which is to be translated as "be mindful of this" is placed at the end, so the actual vocative (or: invocation) in between consists of maṇi, to be translated as "jewel" and padme... ("lotus") which is the same word in Tibetan so remains unchanged in translation. (The six syllables, according to commentaries, purify and bless the six realms)) Om Ah Ra Pa Cha Nha Dhi is the wisdom mantra of Manjusrhi. Since his commentary is the shortest, I'm quoting Visible Mantra here: (Om begins most mantras and has numerous commentaries, but it's basically represents honoring the body, speech and mind of Buddha A is a door to the insight that all dharmas are unproduced from the very beginning (ādya-anutpannatvād); RA is a door to the insight that all dharmas are without dirt (rajas); PA is a door to the insight that all dharmas have been expounded in the ultimate sense (paramārtha); CA is a door to the insight that the decrease (cyavana) or rebirth of any dharma cannot be apprehended, because all dharmas do not decrease, nor are they reborn; NA is a door to the insight that the names [i.e. nāma] of all dharmas have vanished; the essential nature behind names cannot be gained or lost. DHI is the seed syllable of perfect wisdom VAJRAPANI's MANTRA is his namo praise OM (his name) HUM which is the seed syllable of Enlightened Mind among many other things. We've covered this in-depth in individual videos (or in our video introducing the Three Bodhisattvas) and especially on the individual videos (and our extensive website of written features at buddhaweeklycom) on each Bodhisattva.) This is meant as a practice support video for those who practice the three Bodhisattvas daily. Thats super interesting. Thank you. Is there a dictionary of mantra words / sounds and their somewhere? When I googled it is said that some of the words you use arent real words, they are sounds. Is that right? So, what I want to know is...how does it work? Is it like Christian speaking in tongues? Its it like saying the rosary, using repetition to quiet the mind with rhythm? Is is like a normal prayer, and a communication with a deity? Or is it like vibrational science?
This is probably too big a topic for a comment string. Usually mantras work on three levels -- the sound vibration (see linked studies below), the "meaning of the syllables" (usually both syllables and words have separate meanings and layers, and then the three aspects of practice. Definitely not like "speaking in tongues" because mantras are transmitted by Sutra (words of Buddha) or lineage teachings, they aren't random. We're trying to cover many of these questions not only here (we have a video on the nine benefits of mantra, for example, here th-cam.com/video/BP88u6MRO8Y/w-d-xo.html&t. and another one on "supplication mantras" where we break down what many of the mantra words mean (at least we give 21 examples with breakdowns) here: th-cam.com/video/GSTZHJ_hjZY/w-d-xo.html&t ) but for the more in-depth questions, we have our longer written features (including some research on mantras (medical and scientific as well as spiritual teachings) on our main website buddhaweekly.com) for instance: "Ten ways Mantra works" buddhaweekly.com/how-does-buddhist-mantra-actually-work-ten-ways-mantra-can-tangibly-transform-our-lives-and-our-practice/ AND Mantras how do they work: buddhaweekly.com/healing-meditation-prayer-and-mantras-do-they-work-according-to-research-with-new-viruses-arising-can-we-turn-to-mantras-for-help/ AND this one: buddhaweekly.com/157/ and a study on the Arapachana mantra (the Manjushri mantra in this video) and quite a few others.
