Thank you very much for taking the time to do this video. I had done my MD390 years ago, but had totally forgotten how to get this done. Much appreciated.
Thank you for clear instruction and your step by step presentation. It is much appreciated by DMR/MD380 neophytes, like myself. Sure beats instructions like "Go to this website and run..., then flash he radio." Well done.
Followed your video and it worked fine. Had tried previously without success. Love the way my radio now works. You might add some notes as to how to get a radio to display the stations after updating firmware. Took some research and some trial and error to finally get radio to display stations as they talk. This was my whole motivation to update firmware. Thank you for the video.
Took some figuring out, here's the problems I ran into (in case it helps others) I have a USB-Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse (on Win10) and Oracle killed them every time I chose the USB radio in USB settings. They'd stay killed too ; ) Luckily I had TightVNC installed so I closed VirtualBox using my mobile as a remote control. Once it was completely killed, I could unplug/replug the Bluetooth adapter to get the mouse back. So, If your mouse/keyboard is USB connected, I'd suggest caution. Either : 1. dig out an old PS2 mouse ... who has those lying around? or; 2. install some type of remote control, such as teamviewer or VNC. So that you can control your machine from another device - like your mobile phone or another PC. Either of these will save you from having to power-off your machine if the mouse/keyboard fail. If you can't do either - then be warned, you MIGHT have to hard-power-off your PC, so make sure everything you need saved is saved. Resolving the Mouse/Keyboard death problem... I finally found that, on my machine, switching to OHCI mode works (See USB Settings, there are three modes OHCI, EHCI and XHCI, so try them) ... this fixed the problem. From there I could use MD380 Tools without VirtualBox killing my keyboard/mouse. Next problem ... When reconnecting to the radio after the firmware update, it kept complaining that the device couldn't be found. Messed on for a while with that : / Eventually, deleting the existing "patched radio" filter in USB Settings helped, from there I could unplug/replug the programming cable (at the PC side) and the radio was finally connectable again in the USB Dropdown. But, after a little fussing about, the firmware works perfectly and the user database is installed : ) \o/ Yay! Hopefully you'll not encounter these problems. But, if you do, you'll be prepared : )
I am having the same problem and I've tried the vnc and changing usb to 1.0 but no go. It hangs up everytime I hook the 380 up to the usb cable. It makes the little bleep sound of hooking up and then I hear the bleep sound of turning off...Then the computer is frozen. USB keyboard and mouse and windows 7. any suggestions?
@kc0aky Hey bro thanks for this explanation. Anychance of a tutorial on how to writedb I can't use just any if the other CPS. The VM tools way is the absolute only way the USB works and shows/reads the radio . But, I can create a CP and save it. The problem is I can't get it from Windows to the VM as shared folders and clipboard don't seem to work due to tools addons image not installing or mounting. Any way I can do this as I know the "read rdt" and "force blank" works so "writedb" should too if only I could get the rdt file to the /home/tyt directory on the VM Thanks in advance
This video shows you the v3.x version; Out now is v4.x. Basically, you have to do it exactly as showed in this video, If you run in troubles after you watched this video (which is, I think, excellent), go to this Facebook support group for this Toolkit, there is an extended Tutorial too which explains how to install AND how to use the new features: facebook.com/groups/KD4ZToolkit/
Picked up my first MD380 the other day and it has the 380tools on it. What do I need to use to read and write to the radio? Did not know if I could just use the normal software or if I needed to do something different to read and write a codeplug to the radio.
Hi there did you get this working I can't get radio to work on any CPS except This VM. I can write and save a code plug in the stadard CPS as rdt file. But I can't get the rdt file into the VM to "writerdt" have you any ideas?
is kd4z the best version? I'm so confused because I find so many versions of the same thing but how can you tell which is the newest or best. it looks like kd4z is it but is that still the case today 3 years after making this video?
Shawn great video and very easy to use. What if a later version of the firmware is released? Where would we find it and how would that apply to this video?
I installed as shown. GLV ok. I connect my MD-390GPS in DFU mode and the USB settings shows "AnyRoad Technology Digital Radio in USB mode (0200)? What am I doing wrong? :( I added this into the list and did put a 'V',unmarked MD380 as that didn't worked..."Device not found" before. Same result for the Anyroad....."Device not found"
Hello Shawn: just used your video to update my MD380 and install MD380 Tools. For reasons that unclear to me when I try to download the database, the virtual machine says it cant find the device (i assume this means the radio). Editing the list in the USB tab did not solve my problem. Any thoughts on this will be helpful and thanks for a great vid. 73 tom wa1hrh
After flashing the md-380 file, the UV-MD380 model radio would not exit the loader mode (red and green continued to flash after repowering the radio). Since I have a 380 with GPS, I went back and flashed that file. Still would not exit loader mode. Suggestions?
I loaded the Oracle VM Virtual Box Manager with no problem. I then tried to load the VM Extension file I downloaded but it is a .TXT file and the software asks for a .vbox-extpack file. This is niot what downloaded and I cannot find that file. Suggestions please.
Great video! thank you!! I had some issues uploading the firmware and the user database but I think I have it narrowed down to the USB end of my programming cable. I also screwed up and tried to install the 6.x version of Virtual Box on my 32 bit machine...6.x does not support 32 bit OS but the older 5.x version does.
Flashed ok first time but since flashing analogue has gone deaf and the Green led is permanently on dmr works fine though. .any solutions for analogue?
@@kc0aky I did I've tried everything and just nothing works to fix the analogue issue. .must be honest it's got me stumped ready to smash it up the wall 😂😂😂
Shawn, thank you so much for this video. I looked most of yesterday at videos showing very complicated ways to install MD380 Tools and how to update the user database. Some didn't even show how to update the user database. Your video made it very simple and my MD380 has been updated and has the worldwide user database installed and working. One thing that caused me a problem was that when installing the ovf file I kept trying to find an ovf file. I couldn't find it, so I just selected the ova file and then it loaded. You may have been saying "ova" and I just misunderstood.
How do you make it Flash the correct firmware version when you have a non GPS radio or a GPS radio I see there are many different firmwares based on if the radio is GPS or non GPS and depending on what version of firmware is currently on the radio I also see an upgrade dot exe file in a package that looks like it can update the firmware just using that program in Windows is this the case
ocsrc for flashing the factory firmware, you need to read the text file in the zip that explains the version. It you need to check your current software version (explained in doc)
Shawn Garringer for the tools version that you are showing in the video it doesn't show any options for the two different versions. I don't understand how to select the version I need, non-GPS. It looks in the video like there is just one firmware that gets downloaded Am I missing something about this process?
Shawn Garringer you need to connect the radio so it can read the version ? It looks like Flash and Flashgps are two commands, one for non GPS and the other for GPS radios, is that correct?
Are you having luck finding the USB device to map when right clicking on the USB icon in virtual box? Does it ever actually show up with a check mark next to the device? I have found sometimes I need to reboot the host computer (your main computer) when virtualbox stops assigning the device to the VM. Let me know how you're getting along.
Hi Shawn....I absolutely got nowhere on the PC so I went to the trusty ol Mac and downloaded the VM onto it....picked it up right off the bat so..I have a Com port issue with the PC to where the VM is not recognizing it or something...
Cristian Filip I am not sure you might try a Virtual Box forum for support or try installing on a different computer if possible? Or perhaps try a different version of Virtual Box, perhaps older?
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this video.
Worked like a charm! I found that pausing the video while performing each step is critical. VERY WELL DONE!!

Very good info video will this work on the new firmware of the MD-380 as I don't want to brick the radio
